Christ no. The most overrated 'icon' in the history of overrated icons.

'Pull Up to the Bumper' is pretty wicked though.

This Is Not Here 09.14.2008 09:44 AM

Under-rated my friend, under-rated. I can only suggest you give her one last go with the link above, it's from her new record coming out, and it's the best I've heard from her.

demonrail666 09.14.2008 10:34 AM

Fair enough. I just listened to it. Am i missing something here? It's a not particularly interesting TV advert of a video with a half-arsed piece of music attached. 'Pull Up to the Bumper' at least had a pulse. and 'Slave to the Rhythm' is admittedly a great listen every now and again. This though, well it's just ... nothing really. And what the fuck is going on with the lyrics? Music for people who read Naomi Klein books in an Issey Miyake frock. I'd expect to hear it in an Apple Store. Nuff said.

I was open to having my opinion swayed but if anything 'corporate cannibal' merely reinforced my lack of interest in her, and general bewilderment regarding her iconic status. Sorry. I did try.

Once again demonrail makes any other comment superfluous.

Well thanks anyway. Basically Grace Jones was a Surprise Act at a festival I was at last weekend, and she was totally amazing. Dressed SO bizarrely, and her voice as perfect as it ever was. I already knew of her a little, but this week I've dived back into the Grace Jones back catalogue, and had a fine swim.

I have always been fascinated/frightened by this album cover. I enjoy it.

It is weird isn't it, and a great album too!

sarramkrop 09.20.2008 11:23 AM

I wouldn't call Grace Jones's music weird at all. She gets tagged that way by those who follow fashion in ridiculous ways and end up tagging weird any stereotypical and outdated French notion of style. Maybe it's weird for some fashionistas, but what would they know about true weirdness, anyway? I only like her version of ''La Vie En Rose'', and sometimes the way she dresses is cool, but I'd happily throw her off a 10 storey building without regret.

PAULYBEE2656 09.20.2008 11:25 AM

i saw her last month at electric picnic fest. yeah, definatly worth watching. sleazy out........
enjoyed it.......

would you tho????????????

This Is Not Here 09.20.2008 11:27 AM

Ha ha! Poor Grace, she isn't getting much appreciation here. Certainly her character and appearance are weird, but musically not so. If anything I'd call it eccentric. Nonetheless, I am strangely drawn to it.

sarramkrop 09.20.2008 11:28 AM

She's not eccentric either. Show-offs never are.

Given that if I had the oppertunity I'm probably do Yoko and Laurie Anderson, it's really saying something that I'd draw the line at Grace Jones. NO GRACE! NO!

Always loved her version of Warm Leatherette. I think she's fabulous, a consummate media personality, but it doesn't surprise me that people here aren't so into her.

o'connor 09.20.2008 07:04 PM

she looks like a he. and can't be all that smart... she dated dolph lundgren for fuck's sake.

you've got to be fucking joking mate, THAT'S A FUCKING MYTH! That song didn't need her unsolicited insipid version at all, it was fine the way it was!!!!!!!!!!!!!

atari 2600 09.22.2008 06:40 PM

The picture with her adorned with the Keith Haring body art and costuming is the thread's highlight for me.

Um, This Is Not Here, if you've never heard of a Duran Duran side-project called Arcadia, on their sole lp release entitled "So Red The Rose," Grace Jones does guest vocals during the bridge of the first song and single from the album called "Election Day." It's an amazing song. The rest of the album is pretty great too. Nile Rodgers, Carlos Alomar, Herbie Hancock, David Gilmour, and Sting all guest on it.

I liked much of The Power Station spin-off with Robert Palmer singing too, but Arcadia is much better.

o'connor 09.22.2008 07:17 PM

sting? seriously?
