Um....."Latest Reputation Received"

So, I click "your settings", and this funny box appears (see title of thread), with certain referenced threads and authors, and some comments, and some "points" too.

What is all that then?

terriblecanyons 05.09.2009 12:30 AM

It's "rep".

LOL!

Er....so, you sometimes approve or disapprove of a person's postings, and the green bar thingy under their name is adjusted left or right. A popularity thing, like.

Oh, this should be fun.

phoenix 05.09.2009 12:48 AM

yep, pretty much.

it's quite functional. It gives people a way to anonymously troll you! and others a way to give you meaningless green dots!

I dont really get it though. Sometimes I'll go a week with nothing, and then all in one go a bunch of people will decide to rep me for all different things.

I get it now. Sorry for being such a fucking annoying N00b. When you click on comments received, it takes you to the post you made. Interesting social dynamicness. Actually I have to say that this is a very efficient and pleasant site, technically. (Atease (Radiohead) drove me fucking crazy with it's slowassness and number of commercials.)

Watch out, I kick all yr assess. (Oh wait.....we all do. Hahahaha.)

phoenix 05.09.2009 12:57 AM

the rep thing is changeable by admins, so, really it could be a lot higher and more levels saying different things..... each level is set with a little phrase to come up.. but, I think this way its probably better since having a fairly low max-out probably discourages 'rep me' type threads.

yr not a bad noob. im just being silly.

I fucking love Pandora's Box.

I didn't start paying attention to any of this until I realized I had gotten negative reputation for seemingly random things. Not valid things, like complaining about a stream's bit rate, but for posting about how I can't wait to sleep with a European country's teenagers now that the legal age of consent has been lowered, or for posting a drawing of Mother Theresa's tits.

terriblecanyons 05.09.2009 01:05 AM

In my book that's grounds for positive rep, but y'know.

Yeah, but, you are 53. LOL....kidding.

I am 47. Is that unusual for this place? I'm younger than most members of Sonic Youth, LOL. Being 47 at "certain music" discussion boards seemed to be an issue for many of the younger ones there. They were very cheeky. I really didn't give a fuck, but, I wonder if this place is a lot different that way. I suspect that it is.

(I seem to have changed the subject of the initial post.)

blunderbuss 05.09.2009 01:20 AM

A 45 year old got brutally slaughtered once for mentioning Genesis in a positive light, but there hasn't been any major age-ist stuff since the great over-40s cull of '06.

pbradley 05.09.2009 01:27 AM

Most people don't neg rep. This is mostly because a neg rep is an implicit recognition which, in turn, could validate the person's transgression. The curses from my enemies are blessings, so to speak.

The usual defense of refusing to neg rep is that the offended is above that sort of passive-aggressive de-meriting, but the preferred alternative is to reply directly to the individual on the message board and attack their self-worth (being sure to remind them they aren't worth the attention, etc).

This message board pretty much runs the gambit with ages. A number of the regulars are on the older side which inevitably expresses itself in curmudgeonry, which is generally appreciated here. It really is an non-issue.

demonrail666 05.09.2009 02:12 AM

Once people here hit the big 5-0, they're usually passed upstairs to the Julian Cope messageboard, where they can start threads about Hawkwind bootlegs and stepladders.

terminal pharmacy 05.09.2009 02:31 AM

i think the age range is pretty broad here 17 or so to 40/50ish

demonrail666 05.09.2009 02:36 AM

Something which I think is even healthier than the broad age range is that there tends not to be age based cliques. I honestly have no idea about the age of 90% of members here, nor any real interest in knowing. As pbradley says, it's a non-issue.

_slavo_ 05.09.2009 02:51 AM

Anyway, the rep thing works in quite a weird way ... the more rep points the poster that reps you has (and thus is placed higher in the rep chart), the more rep points you get for being repped by this poster.

greedrex 05.09.2009 03:26 AM

Soon the rep system will take over yr life and there's no coming back. The first thing i do in the morning is check my rep. Then i prepare my son's breakfast...... i'm fucked.
