my vista really really likes the windows sidebar, how do I make it go away
so, this laptop has been running vista ulti since I got it... and I've had the side bar disabled since then. This past two weeks, apparently vista has decided it REALLY REALLLY wants the side bar there again. No matter what I do, it comes back. I've unchecked the box saying display at start up, over and over.. I've used msconfig.. I've opened and closed and applied changes over and over..
Yet often in the middle of just going about my biz.. the little icon appears in my taskbar by itself.. and when I click on the properties, the box is checked again to say it will open at start up. It has re opened itself three times this morning, without me restarting my computer once. :( I just want it to stop. |
I got rid of mine using msconfig. I actually didn't care about that I just wanted to get rid of some nasty viruses. Windows stuff seem to act like viruses though :s

I've never had this problem. Maybe a google search might help?

same. |
I hate that for you, honestly I do, but, Vista is a shit OS, unfortunately Microsoft delivered yet another bug-prone memory hog.
|
ps
I"m sorry to hear you're using vista. |
|
vista hasn't been too bad for me. This is really the first vista specific problem I have encountered. I do think it's very bloated and too much BS for an os.. but, yeh.. this is the first really annoying thing it has done to me.

ps I have googled and haven't found anywhere that doesn't just say 'uncheck the box' or 'msconfig' :(

what's the best OS to use for PC?

In terms of security and overall funtionality Linux. |
this is the question arising, windows 7 vs snow leopard
been racking my brain a little much trying to figure out which direction to go, and i am sure it will come up again when both are out |
PUT The MEAT BRA ON AND THE SIDEBAR WILL GO AWAY
if that doesn't work (how could it not?!?!), google might have something to say on the matter: http://www.google.com/search?en-us&q...UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 there's even a version "for dummies"! http://www.dummies.com/how-to/conten...a-sidebar.html |

do you use it? |
I've used Ubuntu for a while. Definitely a solid linux OS without necessarily needing to know how to write script commands.
|
^^^ that may be true, but it sounds like a fucking african dictator.
I'll stick with the promise of snow leopard, thankyouverymuch. mewmewmewpewpewpewmewmew |

i've thought about switching to linux just to see how what the difference is but cursory glances at whatever resources make it sound like a huge undertaking to switch from windows to linux.

for all the gripes people have about vista i have never had any problems with it at all. infact its very user friendly and can do more things at once than xp can and just seems more fluid.
for tips on how to get rid of the sidebar and other things like that try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjOy1TvzdhY |
I'm going to use XP as long as possible since I finally downloaded the Zune theme and everything is now a nice shade gray and orange and not blue and green. Vista makes me twitch and I think Windows 7 will too. I've also thought about using a bootable version of Unix/Linux/Ubuntu, but I'm too lazy really.
I also have just made the switch to Chrome as my main browser and am hoping for full Java and Flash support soon. I downloaded Opera today and it seems cool, but I think I'll uninstall it and just keep Chrome as my main and Firefox as backup. |
