Any Criterion Collection fans?

Barnes and Noble is having a 50% off sale on all their criterion dvd's.
I went yesterday and got Last Temptation of Christ and Videodrome.

I just thought some of you movie buffs on the board might like to know, since I don't think ya'll would find out on your own due to the fact htat most of you hate barnes and noble... XD.

Sidenote: I can't guarantee its not just in Houston.. but I would think not.

Same man. I got their Seven Samurai 3-disc set and have loved them ever since. Regardless of the dvd features, I have yet to be dissapointed with the quality of any of hte movies they release, especially not in picture or sound : p

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Salo
some of Bergman's stuff has recently came out.

I say get anything, really.

pantophobia 07.22.2009 11:02 AM

how long does the sale last?

Green Magnesium 07.22.2009 11:03 AM

For those of you who love Criterion AND High-def, Amazon is also having a big discount sale on Criterion Blu-Rays.

I picked up Chungking Express and Last Year at Marienbad for roughly $40. Not bad considering one Criterion Blu @ list price is nearly $40.

Thanks for the B&N info, Alan. Unfortunately my local B&N doesn't have a multimedia section.

p.s. Thanks for the heads up

They've released some garbage (Armageddon? What the fuck?) and their discs are typically way too expensive. Having said that, they have released more amazing movies (and they're extremely professional about it) than any other company I can think of. At the top of my head, I'd check out the following:

400 Blows
The Killer
Schizopolis
Hard Boiled
Seventh Seal
Chungking Express
Dead Ringers
Withnail and I
Robocop
Tokyo Story
Naked Lunch
Videodrome
Slacker
Ran
Virgin Spring
Jigoku (a bit dated but has some of the scariest visuals I've ever seen)
Sweet Movie
Mala Noche
Fat Girl
Last Year at Marienbad
Alphaville
Andrei Rublev
HAXAN
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
Wild Strawberries
Eyes Without a Face
Taste of Cherry
Jubilee (a bit overrated but definitely worth a watch)
Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
Obscure Object of Desire
Pierret Le Fou
Breathless
Made in USA
2 or 3 Things I Know About Her
Elements of Crime
Exterminating Angel
In the Realm of the Senses
Repulsion
My Own Private Idaho
F For Fake
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
In the Mood For Love
Man Bites Dog (!)
Contempt
Through a Glass Darkly
Band of Outsiders
Life of Brian
Sisters
Discreet Charm of the Bourgeosie
How to Get Ahead in Advertising
By Brakhage (Dog Star Man is in my top 10 films of all time)

I'm sure there's way more I'm forgetting, and obviously more I haven't seen but the above are all great, great releases that I've owned or rented off of nflix.

The main problem with criterion is that they haven't released any Takeshi Kitano films.

You can get the same deals on their website, I posted the link above.

viewtiful_alan 07.22.2009 05:20 PM

I'm trying to decide which one to go get tomorrow...
Salo
The Man Who Fell To Earth
or some more Kurosawa (reccomendations please, all I have is seven samurai)

Haha no prob. Nice avatar.
I got their awesome issue of Videodrome yesterday for 15 bucks.

atsonicpark 07.22.2009 05:23 PM

Get some Kurosawa, out of your choices.

I wouldn't bother with Salo. It's vastly overrated.

viewtiful_alan 07.22.2009 05:24 PM

Any specific reccomendations?
I'm thinking Ikiru.

viewtiful_alan 07.22.2009 05:27 PM

Oh yeah, I'm also interetsed in The Grand Illusion

chairman of the bored 07.22.2009 10:42 PM

I've seen Ikiru and it's really good. It's much less stylized and mind-bending than the other Kurosawa films I've seen, but it's very well-done and pretty damn...emotionally intense. Think of a Mizoguchi film, if you've ever seen one. No fancy bullshit, just stripped down story-telling with great acting and subtle cinematography.
