Recommend me, please, some instrumental acoustic guitar music
I'm looking for stuff either by or along the lines of Peter Walker / Robbie Basho / Sandy Bull / John Fahey that people with a fairly middle-of-the-road taste in music will like, and I need recommendations of particular CDs, please, not just the names of artists.
Thanks. |
For one, I'm currently obsessed with John Fahey's 'America' album. If you don't have that particular one, I really suggest that you get it. Love love love. Listen to the track Voice Of The Turtle if you need evidence (it's on Spotify I think). I'd especially recommend the excellent 4 Men With Beards vinyl reissue...

- Robbie Basho - Max Ochs - Bukka White - Harry Taussig - Dick Rossimi - Peter Lang - Loren Mazzacane Connors - Jack Rose - John Fahey, the king - Leo Kottke - Wooden Spoon - Pat O'Connell - Andrew Stranglen - Terry Robb - Dale Miller - Tetsui Akiyama - Michael Gulezian - Sandy Bull - James Blackshaw - Sir Richard Bishop - Gillian Welch - Sean Smith - Glenn Jones - Harris Newman - Six Organs of Admittance - (some) Jim O'Rourke - Triple Burner - Steffen Basho-Junghans - George Stavis - Bob Hadley - Wayne Lopes Specific albums? Anything by any of those artists, pretty much. I mean, all of that stuff goes out of print pretty quickly, so I'm assuming you'll be d/l'ing it, so yeah.. just get everything. I don't really think most of those artists have only one defining album, as they're all quite consistent in what they do. You seem to already enjoy the big names in American primitive guitar, aside from Leo Kotke and Peter Lang. I'd say definitely get Glenn Jones' BBQ BOB IN FISHTOWN.. Glenn Jones is my third favorite of these artists, just behind Fahey and Basho. Also, get some James Blackshaw.. get GLASS BEAD GAME. It isn't really American primitive guitar, as it's 12 string and almost classical guitar but it's similiar enough, and quite good. I think Fahey's GOD, TIME, AND CAUSALITY is my all time favorite acoustic guitar album... just get everything by Fahey, you'll be good. |
Which is the best, or some of the best, Sir Richard Bishop albums? I love Sun City Girls, but I've never listened to his solo stuff.

Why the question marks? Sure, not every LMC release fits the description, but certainly a good 30 of his 80 albums do.

Richard bishop.. get WHILE MY GUITAR VIOLENTLY BLEEDS.

Will do! |
Wow. While My Guitar Violently Bleeds is awesome. It's three songs that define perfection.

Blunderbuss, do yourself a favour. Get an account for either the hipinion or terminal boredom forums, start a thread asking people to recommend you particular stuff, and marvel at how competent and helpful some posters can be. Honestly, this forum is too arse-centric for anything more than generic, under-researched namedrops, save for the few smarter people. Admittedly, apart from still being a SY fan, I wonder why I still post on here.

Because you love us. |
Yeah, Salvador Kali is def. my favorite by him, actually.

You can tell he worked so hard on that record, taking his time with the material and arranging it. A lot of his other works, while great, just seem to be him wanking on the acoustic (isn't WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY BLEEDS basically just improvisation? It's got a cool atmosphere but not too interesting in the way of arrangement).
Probably one of my favourite records ever. |
well WMGVB is influenced by flamenco (first track) and indian ragas (last track) both those genres are improvisation based genres, so its not just him wanking but writing within the confines of a genre. i love that album, it has the best atmosphere out of all his albums.

Thank you, folks, for trying to help. None of the suggestions fit in with my needs, but I will be buying a copy of Fahey's "America" for my own enjoyment.
|
Glenn Jones - BBQ Bob In Fishtown doesn't fit in with your needs? He's the logical successor to the Fahey throne.
|
where's savage clone? he's always moaning about kottke and windam hill, presumably that's the type of stuff you're looking for?
|
All I know is, this is the only type of music I listened to for a year. Burnt out on it now, of course...
Blunderbuss, if my reccomendations aren't good enough, try rateyourmusic.com .. the lists on there might point you in the direction you want. |
what about some Ass?
