Congratultions on growing to like Angels of Light, Johnny. It's a real shame that they still seem to be looked upon as Michael Gira's post-Swans band rather than as a bloody good band in their own right.

I'm with jon boy on this one. There are far too many i can't nearly to them all justice, but here's a few.
(I've known about and listened to all of these but I now love 'em) Acid Mothers Temple Charalambides Deerhoof M. Ward MF Doom Smog Sunburned Hand of The Man NNCK |
The Carpenters went from something I enjoyed to one of my top 5 bands this year, accompanied by my new found ability to swoon dramatically at middle-8s.
Hank Wangford and Gene Autry have done a lot for me this year, where previously they haven't. Meatloaf also. I finally got into the Kelly Clarkson record. I found myself enjoying the Yeah yeah yeahs, Planes MFS and MCR a lot this year. Opera has taken an upswing in my tastes. I've enjoyed it for a while, but I've found listening to complete operas all the way through in one sitting difficult in the past. Wartime pop/ jazz is probably the biggest thing for me this year, it's the first time since I was about 13 that an entire era/ 'genre' has caught me so absolutely. |
Nutbush City Limits by Ike and Tina Turner had been a revelation for me this year. I think I had previously only heard some later Tina only version which was shit. So I always thought it was a shit song but the original is really great. Either that or I just had a messed up memory of the original...

Nah, the Tina version's gash. You're right about the Ike and Tina one though. Patchy, patchy history that woman (musically speaking).
