WOMEN was easily the worst book I've read in....maybe forever. It was so bad, it made me angry.

He does indeed, as you say, suck.

Women is an odious little book and Bukowski made a very little talent go a LOOOONG way. He has to be applauded for that at least.

the man was to american letters what Hunter thompson was to american journalism, stripping away any and all pretense, and speaking with a raw voice.

pure genius.

I've always thought that his books were more like the rants of an alcoholic rather than a talented writer.

...aaaaaand I rest my case.

in the vein of hemingway and faulkner and american writers that stripped language down to the basics of communication, without floridity or stylistic treacle, he was a literary genius.

Bukowski was a violent, alcoholic misogynist, loved by men (almost exclusively) because he may have communicated his hatred of women through his writing, but he kept it "real" and "raw" (whatever the fuck that means), so making it acceptable.

Something that alcoholic,mysoginistic pieces of shit are really good at.

name a great writer/artist that did not have either addiction issues or interpersonal issues.

There are tons of them but,ultimately,the ones who generally have a more universal appeal are the authors of bodies of work more inclined to the understanding of others rather than just blatant hatred for women,gays and whatever isn't the the lowest common denominator of manhood.He never struck me as being a writer of that ilk.

Rob Instigator is right. Bukowski was, and is fantastic.
