I can't really pick my all time favorite guitarists. That's just too hard. Cuz there are sooooooooo many guitarists that just kick ass. Among my favorites are (in no particular order): J Mascis, Jimi Hendrix, BB King, Muddy Waters, Huddy Ledbetter (Leadbelly), Eric Clapton, Lee Ranaldo, Thurston Moore, Tom Verlaine, Ronald Jones, Kim Thayil, Tony Iomi, Kirk Hammet, Doug Martsch, James Williamson, Ron Asheton, Lou Reed, John Lennon, George Harrison, Wayne Coyne, Jonathon Donahue, Steve Turner, Bob Mould, Brett Netson, the list goes on and on........and on........and on.......

golden child 04.11.2006 07:32 PM

i just got into fahey recently, i read that he lived in salem, oregon (where i live!) and so that sparked my interest. he really is great, ive been reading up on what he did in salem.

For a time, he was homeless and lived in a men's shelter in Salem, Ore. Sober now, he lives in a motel in Salem, where he recorded "City of Refuge," on equipment in his room.

i also read that he is buried here, and last time sonic youth came to portland they were spotted here going to his grave. its all kinda surreal, i wish id have known of him earlier. apparently he collaborated with alot of local artists whom i know.

womblife is amazing.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 04.11.2006 07:35 PM

You should get America and Blind Joe Death, because thats all I have and a copy of womblife in mp4 format. When listening to America for the first time I could hear so many different melodies that were familular. He influenced a lot of people.

kingcoffee 04.11.2006 07:42 PM

and how could i ever forget Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Michael Bloomfield, Steven Drozd, Don Fleming, Christopher Thorn, Roger Stevens, Brad Smith, Jason Graham, Jerry Cantrell, Kurt Kirkwood and Syd Barrett

I've got a ticket to see David Gilmour this Thursday, but I'm thinking of ditching it - it's in a crap venue (Rosemont in Chicago), and I hear on this leg of his U.S. tour thus far he's been a disappointment :( I can't say I'm all that fond of 'On An Island,' but I was hoping he wouldn't play exclusively off that album. I'm more inclined not to go, so that my pristine image of him isn't tainted.

Anybody want to buy my ticket? haha

TheyLiveByNight 04.12.2006 06:01 AM

Mary Timony. Ever since I saw the video for Helium's 'xXx'.

Trasher02 04.12.2006 06:01 AM

Lee and Jim

Glice 04.12.2006 06:21 AM

Exhaustive lists all. I've seen one mention of Haino, which is correct.

Anyone mentioned Keith Rowe yet? I really like Otomo Yoshihide... he's a subtle and simple one.

I think for technical ability we cannot dismiss Yngwie Malmsteen. I actually really enjoy the sheer monomaniacal monstrosity of his playing, but it is ultimately complete gack.

I rarely tire of saying Bailey is one of the better guitarists who you wouldn't necessarily notice has incredible technical ability.

The chaps out of My Cat is an Alien do some wonderful things.

Masayuki Takayanagi (sp?).

His student Kasuo Imai (sp?), who I had the pleasure of seeing last year.

For pugilistic intent, Sunn o)))'s guitarists are great.

For comedy metal solos, Dragon Force.

For writing whole albums on one open tuning, Jandek.

Haino's ok, mostly driven by his own poetry. I wouldn't say he's "great" or anything on guitar though.

No mention of KK NULL?

Has anyone mentioned Preston Reed yet?

Attachment 13

Christ that man can play, seen him twice & he's flattened me both times, what with the whole melody/couner-melody/percussion at the same time on the same guitar thing. Great understanding of melody & harmony too.

next step 04.12.2006 11:08 AM

I value a guitarist for the sound and one of my fave is Tim Foljan

toxic johnny 04.12.2006 11:35 AM

I'm not a fan of technical ability muso masterbation... for me the most important thing is feel and originality.

Dean Roberts
Elisa Ambrogio
the Dead C guys
Christina Carter
Derek Bailey
Viv Albertine

I love seeing women play guitar... not enough of them do in my opinion, they are way more interesting than men as far as playing and performance are concerned.
I'm really bored with seeing male guitarists trying too hard to emulate their idols.

Savage Clone 04.12.2006 11:44 AM

I like seeing women play guitar too, but I would rather watch the girl from Boris any day over Christina or Elisa. She is more of a "guitarist," rather than someone holding a guitar as a means to an end.

RockerNino 04.12.2006 11:51 AM

the SY kids, J mascis, lou reed, johnny greenwood...to name a few
