King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard

Any fans here? Is this place too cool for them? Is that band name too ridiculous?

I fuckin' love these guys. IMHO there isn't a dud in the 5 albums released in 2017, and most of them are very good.

Severian 01.13.2018 03:04 PM

I’m sure a few of the users here would say something snarky if this post corresponded with their scheduled SYG troll time visits to talk about what is and isn’t pure art or whatever, but fuck them.

I’m not saying that because I’m particularly big on KG&TLW, but they’re certainly not at all bad. I feel like what they’re doing is very similar to what (Thee) Oh Sees we’re doing a few years back. Namely, hammering out garage-psych-punk records at such a feverish pace that there’s bound to be a few that gather considerable praise. I actually love Thee Oh Sees, but *they* release too much music for me, and they’ve never come close to five full-length albums in a year.

I’ve only heard one or two of KG’s 2017 albums. What I heard was fun, and fine, and much more interesting than what Ty Segall’s been up to this decade.

What’s the best of the five? I’ll make an effort to listen to it carefully.

Skuj 01.13.2018 04:23 PM

That's a tough question, because it depends what kind of mood I'm in. I have a soft spot for Murder Of The Universe. I know many fans dislike that one, with the spoken word stuff as the dominating feature. But it doesn't bother me. I go into it knowing what it is. It's a ridiculous and fun record. But it's also powerful.

what? They seriously made 5 as in FIVE full albums in a year? Are they the new Guided By Voices?

Can't add anything constructively to this thread so please ignore me :)
I only know that they exist, I've seen the name pop by a few times somewhere somehow
I'll give them a try tomorrow. Is it Sunday music?

Skuj 01.13.2018 10:01 PM

Sketches Of Brunswick East might qualify as Sunday music.

hirsute_biped 01.13.2018 10:14 PM

Late to the party, but I do like them. I really like Flying Microtonal Banana, very much dig the quasi-Turkish microtonal division of the fretboard and the melodic and harmonic results it yeilds. I'm unaware of any other overtly rock albums to employ such a tuning scheme. Maybe some of the Turkish artists like Erkin Koray, Bunalim, etc... but I never read much about their specific techniques. We just ordered a new splatter yellow/blue pressing after it had been out of print for a while. The band name is kind of stupid, but a SY fan should consider the lyrics to Hyperstation before casting stones from the balcony of our glass house. I've only heard two other King Gizz records which I did like too, but not as much as FMB. Their videos are insane and entertaining.

Yeah man. King Gizzard released five full-length albums in 2017.

A very GBV kind of move, but socically they’re not very similar. And I’m not sure but I don’t think GBV ever releases five. I think three or four was the max output for a 12-month span, and that was fairly recently. Could be wrong though.

tw2113 01.14.2018 02:02 AM

Most definitely heard of them, even just locally, but never bothered.

Toilet & Bowels 01.19.2018 04:12 PM

When i read about them i thought they sounded like they might be good, but i when i checked them out i thought they sounded like a band with their dicks cut off.
Also, The Oh Sees are not that similar and a much better band.

Oh Sees are a little bit similar, at least from what I have heard of KG. In a general way... garage psych-rocky stuff, cartoonish aesthetic, lots and lots of albums. But they are much better, yes. And I really don’t know much about KG, so I could be totally wrong about the similarity.

I only brought up Thee Oh Sees because I got a little burned out by their pace of releasing new work — 2 albums in a year, sometimes... never less than one and an EP — so KG is just confounding to me. Five albums in a year. Why?

Skuj 01.20.2018 09:03 PM

I'd be all over the quantity vs quality thing if those 5 Gizz albums sucked, but imho, every one of them is at least quite good, and a couple of them are really great.

I've read about Thee Oh Sees similarities. I don't know that band so I can't comment, but Gizz has released so many different kinds of albums.

Anyway....Nonagon Infinity kicks my ass!!

You need to listen to Thee Oh Sees “Floating Coffin” album from 2013.
Dank shit. A lot of their albums — most — are dank shit, but that one is... ultradank? I don’t think dank is a thing anymore but whatever.

guest 01.21.2018 09:26 AM

literally thee oh sees for pre-teens......oh sees are at least incredibly good at what they do, king gizzard can never transcend pastiche because they're so totally apathetic towards everything.

Toilet & Bowels 01.22.2018 06:24 AM

The Oh Sees album "Orc" that came out last year delivered the kind of laser focused arse kickings that they have been dishing out for years, the whole thing was up on youtube last time i looked so...

Yeah, I kinda passed that one by when it came out, but I went back to it recently and it just roundly kicks ass. Just like Mutilator Defeated at Last, Drop, Floating Coffin, A Weird Exits/An Odd Entrances, etc., etc.

Yeah, I don’t know how similar Oh Sees are to King Gizzard because again I haven’t spent much time with KG, but I’ve listened to a couple of albums and never heard anything as pummeling as, say, “Night Crawler.”

Skuj 01.15.2019 12:41 AM

Well fuck me. 5 albums in 2017. Fuck all in 2018. I'm convinced that we will see their Forever Changes in 2019.

ilduclo 01.15.2019 09:02 AM

Yeah, I’m with the majority here. They’re ok, but I’d much rather hear what Mr Dwyer is up to these days, or Kawabata-san.

Yah.

Skuj 01.29.2019 10:29 PM

I know I'm the only one here who really loves these guys, so, for what it is worth....new music coming soon!! The band hinted as much.

I'm fucking excited, ok?

Skuj 02.02.2019 05:11 PM

Let's Cyboogie!!!

https://www.stereogum.com/2030422/ki...e-video/video/

Skuj 02.03.2019 04:45 PM

The b-side, Acarine, is even better:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0xePP-tpwbQ

I'm thrilled with these two songs. The 2019 album promises to be synth-heavy.

Skuj 02.16.2019 03:39 PM

(My own personal Gizz blog, this!!)

Apparently the new album will be called.....um.... Fishing For Fishies.

Skuj 03.11.2019 06:22 PM

Yep. April 26th.

Fishing for Fishies Tracklist:

01) Fishing for Fishies
02) Boogieman Sam
03) The Bird Song
04) Plastic Boogie
05) The Cruel Millennial
06) Reals Not Real
07) Acarine
08) This Thing
09) Cyboogie

Skuj 03.12.2019 01:56 PM

I thought that Cyboogie and Acarine were very good. But I fucking LOVE this:

Fuck y'all for being too cool for Gizz. This is the 4th song released from the upcoming album, and the 4th time I have been mightily impressed. Fishing For Fishies is going to kick my ass. I don't give a fuck what the rest of you do on Apr 26th or thereafter. :)

(I bet fuckin' Thurston, Kim, Lee and Steve would approve.)

Skuj 04.08.2019 06:24 PM

(I know nobody else gives a fuck but.....)

WTF IS THIS??

https://www.stereogum.com/2039055/ki...b-video/video/

It's not even on the fucking album that is about to be released. B-side? Another album?

Skuj 04.27.2019 03:11 PM

Pitchfork gave the new album 4.8/10. So, it must be good, right?

(I love it.)

Severian 04.27.2019 06:13 PM

New album is boring

They have yet to really capture my attention.

I’m still an Oh Sees guy when it comes to overly prolific contemporary garage rock bands. (Also, “Thee Oh Sees” > “Oh Sees” > “O.C.s”)

Stop reading Pitchfork.

I literally can’t remember the last time I learned about a good new artist from that place. I recommend a boycott.

WTF? Somebody other than me posted here??

Pitchfork famously gave The Fragile a 2.0 rating. I should have stopped paying attention to them 20 fucking years ago.

They (and you!) are so wrong about the new Gizz. It's a riot. It flows wonderfully. I am so happy.

(Honestly, how can anyone think this album is "boring"?)

I’ll listen more. It didn’t grab me right away, but maybe it will.

This should be fun.

New acoustic covers of KG tunes, on guitar with LEGO fretboard and 3D printed microtonal frets, by a Turkish master of the classical form: https://youtu.be/w61EAlED0hA

And some older non-LEGO ones:

Skuj 04.18.2020 06:13 PM

Whoa!!^^^Somebody else posted in my personal Gizz thread!!

This is an interesting interview:

Peterpuff 04.23.2020 09:39 AM

I have long been interested in checking this band out, just a little overwhelmed with where to start based on odd discography. Somebody recommend a good starting point for a noob to these guys!

NYCgaf16 04.23.2020 11:00 AM

i was searching for the albums to buy today... unfortuantely gizz albums were pretty expensive *sigh*

as for the band i really like it. i discovered them sometime ago, like near the end of 2017 which was the biggest year for the band. i watched Middle 8's video on the band and they seemed really cool! the first album i listened to was i'm in your mind fuzz and after hearing the first 4 trax and i felt in love with the band. as for the records Float Along - Fill Your Lungs is my fav and the song is well Float Along - Fill Your Lungs. the most concept album is Polygondwanaland (for all these weird time sigs). it's really fun to j ust listen to the song and try to find the time signature heh. as for 2019 records i liked Infest The Rats' Nest the most. Fishies were...ok

NYCgaf16 04.23.2020 11:00 AM

and 2 drummers! my god!

Skuj 04.25.2020 03:22 PM

Call me boring, but I think Fishies is their best album.

Nonagon and Murder seem to get the most praise from the fans.

I think Float Along Fill Your Lungs fucking owns as well.
