Disco and electronic music in general

How do you feel about it?Are you really just some sad snob who can't accept music finding more interesting ways to move forward other than some detuned guitar? No need for a poll on this one.

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:07 PM

I'm not really familiar with his music. My question,Diesel,is not about the sort of instruments that one plays but more about the narrow minded attitude towards music listening and,as a consequence, music making.

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:23 PM

Any good?He gets good rep left, right and centre it seems.

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:28 PM

Oh that is not a bad thing, surely?Have you heard the new Outkast? Can't wait to get that!!!

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:40 PM

Oh yeah,i just got recently a mix cd that prefuse 73 did a while ago.Of those so called 'alternative hip hoppers' i've always had a soft spot for El-p,Clouddead,Mr Lif,Cannibal Ox,Boom Bip(not really a hip hopper,i know but...).

nicfit 08.21.2006 01:46 PM

the instrumental verision of the cold vein is amazing, almost better then the one with vocals....i love clouddead, boom bip, etc, but lately i absolutely love why's elephant eyelash, great songs, and subtle's a new white.
none of them is a dance album,though...i love m.i.a's arular,i like also the albums by "the knife",some depeche mode (the most dark mooded songs,mostly)....i'm searching for "entertaining" eletronic music,i'll search for porky's suggestions on the other thread, and i'll also chek mu and some other bands/singers...

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:48 PM

Anyone likes the great Pole?Glitch dub master himself?Where are you Pole? You disappeared off the radar.

nicfit 08.21.2006 01:48 PM

oh,porky if you want to check it this should be the link to the new outkast

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:49 PM

Excellent,thanks for that!

alyasa 08.21.2006 01:50 PM

what about alec empire? does anyone like him?

porkmarras 08.21.2006 01:51 PM

Actually, now that i think about it,Pole's first album is really one of the greatest albums made in recent times.

Diesel, get any Atari Teenage Riot.I'm dead sure that you'll fall for them. And Bomb 20,Patric Catani and Ec8r.

nicfit 08.21.2006 02:03 PM

digital hardcore

alyasa 08.21.2006 02:06 PM

Seriously, i've only just heard 1996's Endtroducing... And it is, to put it succintly, fucking ace. I've never heard of Prefuse 73.

porkmarras 08.21.2006 02:17 PM

I can still remember the first time i listened to Bomb 20's 'Flip burgers or Die!!!' because i didnt speak to anyone for a few days.Criminally underrated record.

alyasa 08.21.2006 02:19 PM

There's also Amon Tobin and Kid Koala... Those two are rather conventional though, in their music making...

porkmarras 08.21.2006 02:24 PM

Not Tobin's greatest fan but i can appreciate his music when in the right frame of mind.I'm a little less familiar with Kid Koala's music.

He is probably my favourite electronica type. Any of his Mille Plateaux [sp?] records are very much worth getting, as is his 'Alec Empire vs Elvis Presley' LP.

The only problem I have with disco (and I assumed Porkie meant proper disco) is that I don't listen to it at home. It's dancing music, for dancing to. Out of the house, preferably with girls. See also happy hardcore, although I ocassionally have a bonkers evening.

Daddy, why do they hate us so much....

THAT. FUCKING. BASSLINE.

It's funny, I've dj'd that tune a fair few times, and there's always someone who comes up and goes, "WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?" How to make friends and fry eardrums...

porkmarras 08.21.2006 02:36 PM

"WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS?"
That was exactly my reaction when i listened to that record the very first time.

Gate is Michael Morley from The Dead C. His stuff used to be very much like Dead C, but his last couple of releases have been electronica. I'll send you a copy.

Glice 08.21.2006 02:46 PM

Happy Hardcore will never make sense until you are in a field on gurners with people that you bumped into at last orders who are quite scary.

Sunday night, while waiting for a bus, I got talking to a crack head and ended up drinking beer he'd stolen at his housewhile he and his friends got obliterated on crack. I like doing these things, especially when I come out with my knee caps. One day I won't be so lucky.

Glice 08.21.2006 03:13 PM

I too am descending into drink. Need an early night tonight.

That crack is very moorish though...

I used to buy a lot of DHR stuff. I remember somebody telling me that in the early 90's Alec Empire used to buy a lot of British breakbeat imports (he's from Germany) but played them at the wrong speed. So when he started doing his own stuff, he made it a lot faster than it should have been.

Listen to Sonic Subjunkies or ATR's Raver Bashing.

Pookie 08.21.2006 05:21 PM

And try this fantastic peice of electronica/glitch:

It features two board favourites, Lydia Lunch & Terry Edwards.

Pookie 08.21.2006 05:41 PM

Kim Hiorthoy.

Toilet & Bowels 08.21.2006 09:34 PM

i wouldn't mind getting my hands on that alec empire vs elvis presley record, it's not that easy to come by though. i've got field manual by bomb 20 and it's good but too long. i think cobra killer is probably my favourite DHR thing these days.
anyway, i like pole3 the most, then 2, then 1.

Cantankerous 08.21.2006 10:50 PM

what do you mean, disco?

that disco?

that disco is great!

Toilet & Bowels 08.21.2006 11:26 PM

the last thing you need at this hour is speed

Those are great choices pork. I filmed a few times for some of the guys from the Anticon label. Made two vids for Alias and Boom Bip in the Milkyway A'dam a year ago. Gonna put them on our site soon. Speeking of alternative Hip Hop, ya must know Buck 65 and Sage Francis?

Here's a link to El-p's Deep space 9mm vid. It's got such a simple concept and it kicks ass. You can also find the vid on the Fantastic Damage cd as an extra.
You can check it out here.
