so many surf bands
http://www.oberlin.edu/staff/thinders/Surf.html
I dunno if anyone's interested, but surf rock is one of my favorite genres of music so hey. The link above has hundreds of bands listed, more than I've ever seen, if anyone's interested in checking out lots of surf. Seriously, look at all those fucking bands! |
Also, I'm currently assembling a new surf rock band called THE DEATH POWDERS...
|
repped
|
What's your thought on The Amino Acids?
|
Never heard. Will check em out right now.
My current favorites are the Mermen, Space Cossacks, Surf Coasters, and the Bambi Molesters. |
They are the only really semi-obscure surf that I've listened to a lot. They take the sci-fi thing a little too far, I guess, for my taste.
|
thanks for the rep, al, makes me feel good in my bones.
|
The Amino Acids are okay, but really...just okay. I was kinda hoping they'd go a bit further than they do with their concept actually.
Thanks for the list dude...I've been needing some fresh surf. |

Why waste such a great name on such a shit genre? |

I'm sure you know them already, but if you don't, check out everything MAN OR ASTROMAN has done. They're my favorite surf band. |
I do love stuff like Jan and Dean, the Surfaris and some of the early Beach Boys stuff, but a lot of the more contemporary stuff just leaves me cold. I have a similar view of it to the one I have about ska-punk. Two genres that are fine in themselves, but don't seem to work at all when combined.

It figures one of my favorite surf bands is not highlighted for a link, but they are mentioned.....! :)
So I'll provide a link.... http://www.bar-none.com/bios/raybio.html It's no wonder Guitar Player magazine called the Raybeats' GUITAR BEAT "one of the ten best instrumental albums of all time." A supercombo with members of the B-52's (Pat Irwin), the Golden Palominos (Jody Harris), and Los Straitjackets (Danny Amis), the Raybeats formed out of the ashes of legendary New York no-wavers the Contortions. During the early 80's they were one of the most popular touring bands on the underground rock scene. Their music blended the best of instrumental pop music: surf rock, lounge and Stax/Volt soul together with the experimental no-wave sound of downtown NYC. Bar/None is proud to release GUITAR BEAT for the first time on Compact Disc, complete with extra tracks, rare vintage photos, new liner notes, memorabilia and more! |
i dont know if this is surf music per say, but does anyone know what artist made that music thats in the background of pulp fiction after john travolta spikes up and is driving down the highway of whatever. for some reason, the riffs in that song always sounded very surfy to me? even if theyre not theyre reall rad.
|
Man or Astroman were great live.
awesomeness |
batreleaser, wasn't it the lively ones? Dick Dale does "Miserlou" of course, but I thought the Lively Ones were also on that soundtrack.
|
The Atlantics' Bombora is an amazing song.
|
Adam, have you heard The Wipeouters ?????? (aka: Surf Devo)
|
I don't have much surf rock except for a Trashmen LP I picked up last year. It seems like a rather limited genre to me.
|

It's "Surf Rider" by The Lively Ones. It's my ringtone, haha. |
The only surf band that I've listened to more than a few songs by is Man or Astroman?
|
I sold 4 original issue colored vinyl Man Or Astroman records on Ebay for over $87
I paid $10 for them. could not get rid of them fast enough |
Fool!
|
fool? for making 8 times my monetary investment?
shiiit |
No. For paying 10 dollars for them in the first place. HA!

Doesn't sound enough like Kenny Chesney for you mr. texas? |
Quote:
Well, you have to factor in the money you've thrown down the toilet. I mean, spent on They Might Be Giants albums. |
TMBG albums are CHEAP!
hahahah! kenney chesney was married to renee squintwigger right? I heard he swings for the "other" team though. is he from texas? |
Haha,
never has one man been so socially hampered for his liking of a single band. I honestly don't think I've ever knowingly heard a They Might be Giants record. I assume it's an ordeal. |
they might be giants.. all I know is the malcom in the middle song.
|
What are some good surf rock albums to start with? I'm a total n00b to it.
|
you gotta love art rock nerds from NYC circa 1981-86
The first three TMBG records are classic win forever self titled lincoln flood I love their deep psycotic depression, just unbelievable nearly pathogenic pessimism. of course the MUSIC sounds bouyant, melodic, spaztic happy freakout, which creates a perfect dichotomy for my ears. TMBG were two guys with a drum machine on stage for YEARS, before anyone else pulled it off. and the hipsters hate them cuz they use accordion. you know the hipsters. gotta look cool before everything.... ;) |

that scene that flicks back and forth between scagged out travolta cruising in the car to the creepy shots of him tying off, and it has that incredible zoned out guitar melody. anyways, man or astro man is probably the only surf band whos music i am very familiar with, meaning owning mutiple records, and i do love them so. |
cool.
|
i love it
but only the stuff from the 60s and man or astroman. |

To me they're like the epitome of everything shit and wrong with anything that dares calling itself ''alternative music''. To Rob Instigator, apparently, they are something to treasure while having a go at bands and styles that piss all over them quicker than you can say ''good taste''. |

OK, i just searched them on youtube. Oh, they did Birdhouse. Jesus Christ. I'm sort of lost for words really. Fuck. |

How the hell have I never heard of this before? |
Oh and TMBG suck. Big time. I didn't even know they did that Malcom in the Middle song. Makes me hate them even more.
|
THE DEATH POWDERS, the new surf project I'm going to do, I want it to be really really dark surf. Any tips on getting a dark sound? Like a certain tuning that would be really dark but not sound like nonsense when I play fast?
