Anyone musicians here make much scratch off this site? Or gain a few fans? Is it worth it?

evollove 11.13.2011 09:25 AM

SY relevant, I'd say.

copy/paste myself from that other thread:

This is a good one if you like your post-rock with lots of strings:

First two albums are free, new one must be paid for. And I will do that as soon as I find it in CD format. If anyone knows where to buy it (except Irish amazon), please share.

and also:

and this is a taper posting his results on bandcamp:

I'm not an artist so can't speak for myself, but if Nathan (=Rivulets) wouldn't be happy about it, he wouldn't have posted his complete collection on bandcamp. He's quite picky and for instance openly slams Spotify whereever/whenever he can.

I love Bancamp. An obvious virtue is that it would let you stream in case you need to have a teaser in order to decide if you'd like to spend your money on some record, and If you finally wouldn't purchase it, you can listen to the whole thing for free due to the bands' will, forget about hunting down lossy rips on blogs and torrents. Also pretty useful to find some new stuff. I, for once, have spent a lot of money on Bancamp lately and I'm happy with it. It's a good platform for musicians to expose their work, and it pays in the sense that it would gain them some exposition and certainly some bucks as far as I know, contrary to other means of streaming like Spotify, for instance (Nathan Amudson, AKA Rivulets, tweeted a little while ago about Spotify's unfair practices, but his whole discography is up on Bandcamp)...

Some of my favorites:Some of Steve Shelley's projects are also up on Bandcamp, but I feel i've typed a lot for now.

hipster_bebop_junkie 11.13.2011 10:42 AM

_tunic_, you posted while I was typing all of that. I agree completely. (Great minds, etc...)

It's female singer/songwriter. Wish I had taped her, she played a very strong set. Better than the album.

Big fat yes. I've bought both digital files in .FLAC format, and physical copies of quite a few records. At the moment, I'm waiting for my super-deluxe 2 LP limited edition of Chrysta Bell's album, "This Train"; Tatsuya Yoshida's "Ruins Alone"; Seijiro Murayama's "Solos"; and Jessica Bailiff's "Old Things", all of them ordered through Bandcamp. Not the first time I've spent some money over there, either. If you are questioning the actual usefulness of Bandcamp as a means to actually sell music in addition to be a medium for free streaming of a whole album, I'd say there have been comments by artists affiliated to Bandcamp which suggest that it actually works (Rivulets, for instance).

evollove 12.04.2011 12:36 PM

I get that streaming=more sales.

Earlier I had wondered if anyone made money, so I was now wondering about the other stage of the prcoess.

I get the feeling sometimes that Bandcamp is musicians buying each other's stuff, circulating the money among themselves. Maybe not.

only a few things, if I like something enough to pay for it I like to get a phsyical product like vinyl, cassette or cd but on rare occasions I have payed for flac/mp3's...

Not exactly. Independent (or even mainstream) artists are not the only ones using Bandcamp; some labels are, too: Three Lobed Recordings, Morctapes, Carbon Records, Chrome Peeler Records, Electric Cowbell Records, and ugEXPLODE, all have some awesome stuff from their catalog up on Bandcamp. In adittion, most of the positive comments posted on bandcamp's testimonials page come from music fans or users rather than from the artists themselves.

- You can write about it on your blog/facebook/twitter - share the links to the songs.
- Send the links to your friends.
- Shove it under the noses of people who may be able to help sort out gigs, promotors, agents, what-have-you.
