Rage Against the Machine are back!

www.ultimate-guitar.com/news/general_music_news/rage_against_the_machine_to_reunite.html

Quote:

Rage Against The Machine, the seminal L.A. band that made heavy music into political manifesto, will reunite after a seven-year lull for one show as the headliners at the 2007 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Sources say Rage, which played the main stage at the first Coachella in 1999, will be joined by other familiar faces for the eighth edition of the festival, which covers three days this year and begins April 27: Red Hot Chili Peppers, which headlined in 2003, are back, as is Björk, who topped the bill in 2002.

var rm_host = "http://ad.yieldmanager.com";var rm_section_id = 48392;var rm_iframe_tags = 1;rmShowAd("300x250");
It's not clear which day Rage or the other acts were slotted to play; that announcement is expected in the next few days. Other acts expected in the eclectic lineup: Arcade Fire, Interpol, Willie Nelson, the Roots, Manu Chao, the Decemberists, Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Crowded House, Air, Tiësto and Kings Of Leon.
Rage, which broke through in 1992 with the defiant single "Killing in the Name," won fans across the social spectrum with singer Zack de la Rocha's rap-based lyrics backed by the band's hard-rock melodies. They topped the U.S. pop album charts in 1996 with "Evil Empire" and in 1999 with "The Battle of Los Angeles."

It's... a dream come true.

*implodes*

flophousefloozie 01.22.2007 05:06 PM

I can't stand their music. Not at all.
No offence, of course.

jon boy 01.22.2007 05:06 PM

what a suprise. does this mean another round of che guevera t shirts and middle class 16 year olds telling people 'fuck you i wont do what you tell me' after too much cheap lager on a tuesday night?

Rob Instigator 01.22.2007 05:06 PM

I am sorry to hear it.

"seminal" my ASS

they were KORN with a political button

they were LIMP BISQUICK with a che gueverra shirt from the GAP

fuck Rage agains the machine. what a waste of guitar strings.

zach de la cockroach can go fucking die and take his hack fuck "audioslave" buddy with him, and his easy, didactic polemics too.

enjoy the bullshit.

Pookie 01.22.2007 05:10 PM

What Rob & jon boy said.

Destroy Rock 'n' Roll 01.22.2007 05:10 PM

Eh...

EDIT - Actually, why do I act surprised?

pantophobia 01.22.2007 05:18 PM

it was one thing to be anti-establishment, but the communist thing and all while on Sony and being on MTV and having 2 number one albums seems a little hypocritical

and their music seems a little too dated, i can't stand them anymore

and someone else said it somewhere else, but why stop under the bush era, they let Michael Moore convince Tim to storm the stage and that broke up the band, so it's kinda dumb

Glice 01.22.2007 05:35 PM

I never understood why Rage against the machine didn't change their name to the far more appropriate 'Shit shit fucking shit'. Or was the non-descriptive name ironic?

Glice 01.22.2007 05:36 PM

I'm so cool, I'm not even going to leave an address for my hipster points.

Glice 01.22.2007 05:36 PM

Not that I want to be cool. Pssh.

Glice 01.22.2007 05:37 PM

I Am Scared At Night And My Winky Makes Water.

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 05:43 PM

Hope they sing about sex this time around.

kingcoffee 01.22.2007 05:46 PM

Thank God!!!!!! They are finally BACK!!!!!! I think that they just couldn't take it anymore. The world needs them. RATM were borne from righteous political outrage and after 6 years of a retarded monkey that we call "Mr. President" the boys know when they are needed to cut through the bullshit.

SynthethicalY 01.22.2007 05:48 PM

Ha! that was funny.

CHOUT 01.22.2007 05:52 PM

This tread makes me wanna go buy that Che Guevera book bag for $50 from my local lifestyle outfitters.

Alex's Trip 01.22.2007 06:23 PM

Screw RATM...I believe Jesus and the Mary Chain are reuniting as well.

That's not really true. It depends how a band conducts themselves in the media and in their promotion. Being on Sony doesn't contradict what they had to say or what they stood for necessarly. Have you ever heard the saying "You have to be apart of the machine to know the mechanics of it"? Then you can truely break things down. Who do you think you're going to get your point across to if you ban major labels and play in your basement? The bigger the label the louder the voice, you could say. So perhaps that's what they were going for.

As for them reuiniting. I'm not interested. I liked their self-titled, and Evil Empire is a classic, but I lost interest after that. I think they should remain seated.

kingcoffee 01.22.2007 06:33 PM

anyone who isn't a RATM fan is a freedom-hater! You hate our freedoms!!

Norma J 01.22.2007 06:34 PM

Crypto, is that you?

kingcoffee 01.22.2007 06:35 PM

is who who?

soapbars 01.22.2007 06:47 PM

more important than the bullshit that surrounds them, remember they sound awful,

hey, i remember being 15 years old, shouting "fuck you i won't do what you tell me" at a big open air summer festival. this one to be exact, see if you can spot me in the crowd: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VerfuJmxD6I
i'm sure i had some lager, but since i had just discovered marijuana at the time, probably not too much. and it wasn't cheap lager either, them festivals were already expensive back in the 90's... my background is i reckon what is considered middle class, but i never owned a che guevara t shirt.

most importantly though... I'VE GROWN UP NOW... and so should the members of rage against the machine.

kingcoffee 01.22.2007 07:07 PM

Man, what is with all the RATM hate around here?? They were one of the only mainstreem bands that had the balls to talk about all the bullshit that the government and the status quo pulls. Just because a lot of their fans were white kids from suburbia who wore El Che shirts (and probably didnt know anything about Guevarra, unfortunately) doesn't mean the music or the message is any less important. They stood for defiance, strength, and human rights. They make many good points in songs like Testify and Guerilla Radio, Killing in the Name, Bulls on Parade, and Sleep Now in the Fire. They were also really good musicians. They played loud, heavy, unbridled, spirited music. When you hear them you know they mean and believe what they are doing.

porkmarras 01.22.2007 07:10 PM

The dilemma still exists:Who listens to them? The surfacing of them represents a downward spiral for american 'alternative' rock music to me.

I don't hate them, it's just that I can't take them serious... they spent more time at Grammy and MTV Awards than at political rallies... they were ideal for me during my "fuck you" period and I'm sure that counted/counts for many other kids too... but what are they trying to achieve with this reunion other than cashing in? or is it just coincidence that they're choosing to reunite on another huge summer festival?

kingcoffee 01.22.2007 07:58 PM

Probably just a coincidence. I've been waiting to hear of their reunion all throughout Bush's presidency. Besides, they are commies aren't they? Or at least socialists. That means they shouldn't bother with making a lotr of money. Zach de la Rocha left the band because of money (partly) and fame. They probably just feel they need to say something. Fucking musicians, always wanting to say something.

kingcoffee 01.22.2007 08:00 PM

Plus, they tried to sabotage awards shows. Remember when the bass player climbed the statue at wahtever-the-hell-award show that was? They arrested him. They like to fuck with the establishment. ANd to do so, you must penetrate the establishment. Besid3es, if someone gave you an award for an artisitic statement, wouldn't you accept it? They are trying to congardulate you on a job well done. Sure the Grammys and MTV are pretty indescriminate and therefore subject to criticism, but come on.

Norma J 01.22.2007 10:26 PM

Apparently Crowded House are back together for a tour too.

timtimtim 01.22.2007 11:21 PM

I think that they're getting back together because the last Audioslave album flopped and Cornell is taking time off to make a solo album

Rob Instigator 01.23.2007 10:20 AM

I hate them! Their polemic rhetoric is on the discourse level of a bright 12 year old! Many a metal band, cheeseball or not, before rage was shouting the exact same political mumbo jumbo. Ministry did it, megadeth did it, emtallica did it, slayer, nuclear assault, sacred reich, it is standard heavy metal lyrical topic. metal dudes do not sing of love, mainly because they never got any, and so they sing of politics, death, hate, loneliness, etc.
SONY corp is a subsidiary of mega multinational conglomerates who commit the very atrocities that zach the rat faced buttcrack sang about.

they could have taken a lesson from Fugazi, but instead they wanted to be big time rock stars. their didactic rants were their GIMMICK

get over rage against the machine.

PAULYBEE2656 01.23.2007 10:49 AM

oh no... the anti rage backlash has begun. i could say that i think they are the most underrated american performers to come of age post nirvana breakthrough. intello agit punk rap with a trailblazing and innotive guitarist who predefines the term "experimental". attacking the masses with a headbutt of political rampage the world hasnt seen since the days of the fuhrer and his cronies.

freedom music is a term loosely put to descrbe "people music" and te che guevara image associated with ratm is evidence of this bans power (che is argentinian yknow). i could say that without this and the world would have not heard th delights of of other rapfunknymetal acts like kjorn, limp wristed and other, in fact an entire scene for an entire generation would not have occoured. tom morello carving out pearls of wisdom from his single effect laden guitar to make it sound like a dj at a school dance, zack with his sensible yet aggressive lyrics shouting for the vote, shouting for peace, rapping for the maaaan. and the other 2 who did a thing with chris cornell...... but im not going to. they suck, they sucked before and im damn sure they will suck even more now.

kingcoffee 01.23.2007 05:45 PM

Nah, they dont suck. Even if the reunion is suspect, you cant take away that they were good musicians who made a good point. If that's yr standing on it then fine, but I will enjoy the music the way I do. I'm glad they are back. ANd also, I feel that RATM being compared to Korn or Limp Biscuit is really denegrating toward the talent Rage had. Korn sucked! Always did, always will. Ditto for Durst.

Rob Instigator 01.23.2007 05:47 PM

what exactly are the musical differences between korn , limp bisquick and deftones guitar attack and RATM's?

I have heard albums by all several times, and they are just as insipid, third rate riffing as a human can create

megadeth was better

kingcoffee 01.23.2007 05:50 PM

I just think RATM sounds better. The guitar and bass and drums and vocals as well as lyrical content just appeal to me more.

It's like asking the difference between Led Zeppelin or Journey? Although I like Zeppelin and I hate Journey, it all comes down to personal preference. Music is primarily subjective. If it is good to one person but garbage to another, who is right and who is wrong?

bytheriver 01.23.2007 07:10 PM

Well I like em, if you dont like the tunes fair enough but Ive had a lot of fun jumping around to their songs, I think theyd be ace live and would definately go see them. As far as their political 'shit' goes, I'd take misguided idealism over bullshit hipster artiness any day, at least they were saying something, and whilst Ive lost a lot of time for the left and the western protest movement I still think RATM were on the side of the angels. By the way did you know Tom Morello has a PHD in political science, not that means anything. Fuck You I Wont Do What You Tell Me is probably the best line for a fourteen year old to hear, it may not be smart but it sure is exciting.

wow giving opinions on message boards, like chewing air with a foaming mouth in an empty room.

I saw JAMC in 1985 (supported by Sonic Youth), and they were amazing. Completely lived up to the hype that surrounded them at the time.

Then I saw them in 1996, and they were not amazing. Cool and aloof had turned into dull and lifeless.

Still, they were never appreciated as much as they should have been and so probably need the money.

thought you would be pleased kar!

The Lung 01.24.2007 07:51 AM

Yeh I liked RATM when I was 12-14 but I would never listen to them again. However I think it is stupid to compare them to Korn and Limp Shit, Tom Morello has more talent in his hair than the other bands put together. Some of his solos with rage were really good but audioslave suck dog shit so fuck it.

EDIT: I wonder why J&MC aren't headlining?

king_buzzo 01.24.2007 10:13 AM

and so are j&mc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
