Microsoft officially release Windows Vista today!

Well, it's finally here.
It's about time, 'cause anything beats XP.

Anyone have it yet?

Looks like they're trying to imitate the Macintosh's graphical user interface with Aero.

Windows_Vista_Wiki

Pookie 01.30.2007 05:17 AM

I'm sure some suckers do.

Tokolosh 01.30.2007 05:44 AM

Criticisms of Windows Vista include protracted development time, more restrictive licensing terms, the inclusion of a number of technologies aimed at restricting the copying of protected digital media, and the usability of the new User Account Control Security Technology. Reviewers have also noted similarities between Vista's Aero interface and that of Apple's Mac OS X operating system, particularly around the use of transition effects. Moreover, some concerns have been raised about many PCs meeting "Vista Premium Ready" hardware requirements and Vista's pricing.

Not only that. There are 6 editions with costs ranging from €259 for Basic, to €599 bucks for the Ultimate edition!!
Yeah right!

Ps: Looks like voice recognition has been improved though. *yawn*

Pookie 01.30.2007 05:50 AM

Just what I was going to say.

next step 01.30.2007 06:01 AM

Did you get a pair of safety belt ??? I have a presentiment that new Vista will crash often!

yes I know about the new system, I installed a Longorn last summer but now, since I got pro tools I must freeze both my computers XP and OSX cause looks I cant do any updates or whatever, otherwise protools doesnt work. fuck in cul!

nicfit 01.30.2007 07:50 AM

Think I'll stick with XP until the "upgrade" will be a real necessity. I quite hate changing OS, especially when the one I run works just fine (not many problems with xp in my personal record, some crashing with games but who really cares...If I was that into gaming I'd probably buy a console...).

Inhuman 01.30.2007 08:09 AM

Microsoft puts WAY too much into the appearance of their products. Media player 11 looks amazing, but guess what? The progress bar is broken half the time.

It is about time that they release it though, going to be nice to replace my XP system with it. I'll be running with Vista, OSX, and Fedora Core 6, so I'll be damn up to date. I'm just going to wait a bit for the price to drop and security leaks to be patched up a little.

RdTv 01.30.2007 08:26 AM

It takes a village to raise boy.....
and apparently it takes Microsoft 6+ years to release a new OS. Smoke and mirrors is what I say, yeah it may be shiny and glossy and clear and 3-d, but guess what ITS STILL WINDOWS, it probably won't work as designed and evidently you need a mega machine to even load the ''platinum'' version. Sorry but I'm not impressed by Vista, I've heard from friends who have tested it, that it isn't nearly the OS you would expect from its visual beauty.

noumenal 01.30.2007 08:37 AM

I'm going to upgrade soon. Looking forward to it. I had no issues with XP - it was a great operating system. The Games for Windows thing seems like a great idea too. Yay. I'm going to upgrade my computer soon too when I have some $$$.

Like the Russians once said, "If it's not broken, don't fix it".

king_buzzo 01.30.2007 09:11 AM

'95 pwns!

Inhuman 01.30.2007 10:10 AM

Pretty much every operating system they created is based on the Windows 98SE kernel, with a few bug fixes. I like the accessibility in windows, but they're corperate fucks. The networks are easy and clean to install in windows, but you need to buy, update, rebuy, and reupdate antivirus, they make you purchase office software for a bundle, and they limit their compatibilities and it's closed source. Although harder to use, I like my Fedora Core 6.

val-holla-ing 01.30.2007 10:27 AM

so it's windows XP times two? because that's all it looks like.

leopard is going to bash vista to death in a few months.

jon boy 01.30.2007 11:14 AM

so is it running ok? i can imagine people are going to be poking holes in it like crazy. hope its finished unlike other versions of windows when they came out.

Russians are (mostly) wise people :) .

ah! you are okay. I like what apple did during the years especially in the beginning but Harry Potter won. Intel and microsoft are definitely onto mac computers and they made them already less solid!! Hook up well the safety belt and welcome aboard!

sorry, but that's just a bunch of balls-- xp is a fine OS, does what you ask, it's stable as a rock; and media center seems to be great for people who use it-- better than mac in that respect as a matter of fact (for what i understand anyway). but mac looks better without the hardware upgrades.

what vista does is a few things better, and it sure looks a lot better, but i don't give 2 fucks (for now anyway). i'm waiting a couple of years until it's fully debugged before i upgrade. well, maybe less, we'll see. i'm sure they'll be releasing a number of service packets in no time though. let the early adopters take it up the ass.

Hip Priest 01.30.2007 02:36 PM

I like XP. I've had zero problems with it, which is quite good for a Sebastian/Computer relationship.

tesla69 01.30.2007 02:47 PM

There are some strong criticisms on Slashdot, the most glaring I think is the pro-copyright checks builtin at the request of RIAA and Hollywood that slows down (and degades) the monitor quality, esp. for HD stuff, if I understood the arguements right.

jon boy 01.30.2007 02:49 PM

so what are some of the features of the new one? does it tell you that your looking great in the morning?

!@#$%! 01.30.2007 02:51 PM

it searches fast, or some shit like that. whatever.

luxinterior 01.30.2007 03:11 PM

Fuck, I just got XP, like, 6 months ago.

This is so not cool.

jon boy 01.30.2007 03:13 PM

an estimated 100million people will be using it within 12 months.

Well screw those assholes. 'Course, I'll probably be the even bigger asshole who waits years to get Vista, just out of spite.

keep it. it's fine.

did you get a coupon for vista upgrade with it? or were you upgrading something else?

you see, vista requires monster hardware upgrades, apparently. enjoy what you have & let fools shoot each other in walmart parking lots for a place in the line, eh?

Well actually 6 months ago was when I bought my laptop. Before that, I just used a shared home computer that for whatever reason did not yet have XP.

nicfit 01.30.2007 03:25 PM

Problems will ensue when direct x 10 will become the industry standard....

that's fine, xp will be around for YEARS just like win98 and 2000 are still used by tons of machines. support will be available for years too.

if i was to take a guess, i'd say your machine won't be able to run vista due to the inordinate hardware demands. if your machine doesn't say "vista capable" it probably isn't, and even if it were, i'm not sure you would want it anyway... the hype about vista is just a way to get people to fork out MORE money. sure some people may need it, but not everyone, and not right now.

wax 01.30.2007 03:52 PM

im very glad i switched to mac a year ago. osx is almost exactly what i want and need. when i get on my windows pc it makes me mad.

noumenal 01.30.2007 03:58 PM

Yeah, I'm going to wait until I uprgrade my computer, which will be a good while from now. As a gamer, I'm really looking forward to it and DX10.

Exactly. There's barely any benifits for people [yet] to need to upgrade to Vista. I can do everything I intend to do on a computer with a 2000, NT, or Redhat 9 system, maybe even win 98 and I use a computer nearly 12 hours a day for software development, web administration, and graphics design. I don't even feel the dire need to have XP even. They did take a long time making Vista, but they should have found a larger gap to jump. I tried Vista, and I didn't realize too many benifits in comparison to XP. I'll stick to my Fedora fo' sho.

No need to get touchy !@#$%!. I agree that pc's have their purposes and advantages, but let's get serious here. Macs have the upper hand in many ways. They don't only look good, like most pc die hards say. They last longer, crash less and give you the assurance of getting the job done every time. My experiences are that standard pc's are great for doing stuff like internet, web design, DTP, music, gaming(especially), etc.
The thing is that if you want to get a pc to run as smooth as a mac, you need to spend a lot more money than you think. Maybe more than you would pay for a standard G5. I have friends that own well calibrated pc's and they work fantastic, but these guys know what they're doing. Geeks, so to speak. Your average dell, HP, whatever, that you by at walmart will probably give you hassles within a year or two. I personally couldn't be bothered with configuring hardware. I'm only interested in using software applications for video editing and web/design. I've tried using pc's in the past, but wasn't very successful. Maybe it's just me, but I'm happy to use a machine that works as stable as mine.

ps: luxinterior. I wouldn't be disappointed by purchasing XP a couple of months ago. Look at it this way, if you hadn't bought it then, you'd have to pay the full dosh for Vista. Now you'll only have to pay for an upgrade, which is half the price.

!@#$%! 01.30.2007 05:00 PM

eh? touchy? cmon-- don't project. i just think that was you said was bullshit-- misinformation-- hype-- and i called it like i saw it. maybe i should be more polite. "excusez-moi, monsier toko, mais ce que vous dites son des grosses conneries..." oh i hope i haven't maimed the french language. but yes, anyway, my point is that xp (pro, anyway, i hate home) is quite a rock solid little thing and people shouldn't rush off to spend hard-earned money on whatever is the hot marketing campaign of the day.

btw i just finished editing a video project in a dual g5. it was sweet and all, and i've been thinking of getting an additional mac for our office, but do not claim that macs don't crash. oh yes they do. they are just more stylish about the way they do it.

but again, back to my main point-- i see no need for the rush. i don't see vista doing great revolutionary things as compared to xp, except really looking prettier. and for that, i don't see the urge to spend the cash.

---

EDIT:

ooooh hm i am thinking about this again. and maybe we're seeing it from different points of view. sure, it would be great to have a good upgrade from xp. but see the things is that from what i've read about it, it's not such a leap. not such a leap at all. so i don't see the urge to go & buy vista. it's not like "oooh i must have this". i really don't. i got xp pro in my 3 machines and i have zero trouble. sure osx is prettier but it can be a pain in the ass. one thing i like about xp is that unlike the mac it lets you get "under the hood" where the mac doesn't. not in any way i can detect anyway. but i do want a mac. i do, i think. i was going to buy a new laptop but i'll get a mac instead. anyway. not rushing out to get vista here. not.

jon boy 01.30.2007 05:00 PM

i personally would love a mac over a pc.

compulsive diarrhea, jico 01.30.2007 05:03 PM

Ha! I couldn't have said it better. Touché. Did you know that they even excuse themselves before booting up, and when they come back, everythings still there. Amazing! :D

Yeah, If I were you, I wouldn't by Vista just yet.
I don't have a clue about french, by the way.
