Just to be clear, does anyone have an approximate date on when "old school" ends?

Rob Instigator 11.14.2013 02:39 PM

Good question. I do not know the divisions, but I guess it is anything pre 2000? who knows.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 11.14.2013 08:35 PM

old school hip hop is 1980-1988 and even then that is pushing it, really its more like 1986. By the late 1980s it became more recognizable to 1990s style of rap, but 1980-86(and some groups till 88) have that more "old school" sound and feel.

Nefeli 11.15.2013 05:29 AM

Old school doesn't mean any specific shit. it just means old shit. it is 2013. Most young hip hop heads today were 5-10 years old in 2000. so, for the sake of the thread, keep the Hip Hop to pre-2000.

In 1990 "old school" was what suchfriends described. However, Hip Hop has been around now for about 40 years, or as long as Rock n Roll was around in 1995.

Rob Instigator 11.15.2013 11:43 AM

Yeah, but it doesn't change when or what comprised the foundation. By "
Old School" you're talking about "heritage" hip hop, and that is most definitely all rap before 1988. 1988-1998 is probably the high water mark, and 1999-2005 is probably a great era of soulful, semi-conscious hip hop in the mainstream, followed by the dreadful Kanye-Wayne-Drake era of rap from 2005-2013, when essentially, hip music in the 2000s compared to hip hop in the 80s/90s is like comparing 1980s terrible pop music with fantastic bands from the late-1960s-to-mid-1970s...

Plus, stylistically there is a world of difference between the sound, beat, and flow of rap music in the 1980s and 1990s, which is why I disagree and say that 1990s rap can't be considered "Old School" be like saying Nickelback is grunge..

Rob Instigator 11.25.2013 02:44 PM

it will all be oldies eventually. fuck it. and eventually it will all be forgotten.

That is true, but within oldies there are those Dick Clark wuhite folk oldies, there is that "rock and roll", there is that "soul", there is "Mo-Town" and "du-op" and all of those variations...

Rob Instigator 11.25.2013 03:23 PM

Hip Hop doesn't seem to have as many genres as rock music claims.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 11.25.2013 03:38 PM

Dude, yes it does! There are like at least ten distinct different styles/eras of hip-hop and rap music, and they are all different enough from each other to become certified sub-genres for whatever that means to music critics who write about this shite

Rob Instigator 11.25.2013 03:55 PM

ten?

folk rock
stoner rock
heavy metal
psychedelic rock
shoegaze
emo
hardcore
punk

funkrock
doom metal
disco
progressive rock
roots rock
new wave
math rock
southern rock
surf rock
grunge
no-wave
etc etc

That is just off the top of my head. Hip Hop does not have anywhere near that many designations, not that they mean anything quantifiable, but in that hip hop is, in the underground, a very fluid expressive, ever-changing quantity, but in the mainstream, hip hop is sequestered into two or three categories that is all the record labels seem to want to push. Rock was allowed (maybe cuz it's made mostly by white boys and sold to white boys) to change and grow while using the mainstream.

BTW, Drake was on Degrassi High. did not know that...
