Advice on a photo to chose

So, my mother wants me to enter a photography contest (pictures of pets) At first I didn't want to but I was thinking about it and what harm could it do? I doubt I'll win but whatever haha, the prize is a camera.

So, which is best to enter, if any? They're all flawed.

Photo 2. It was close between 2 and 4.

afterthefact 02.11.2007 09:49 PM

2, but I'm partial to cats :)

nomadicfollower 02.11.2007 09:49 PM

My vote goes to picture two.
Good luck.

EMMAh 02.11.2007 09:58 PM

All votes two so far? Hmm.

Thanks guys :)

EMMAh 02.11.2007 10:01 PM

I have a colour version if picture two also.

Sonic Youth 37 02.11.2007 10:04 PM

Keep it B&W

youthoftomorrow 02.11.2007 10:48 PM

two.

and i would also keep it black and white.

Clementine. 02.11.2007 11:01 PM

picture number two. i like the look of intent on the cat.

nature scene 02.11.2007 11:15 PM

I like one and two. But I think i'd go with two.

finding nobody 02.11.2007 11:29 PM

All of these really show the beauty of simplicity
I like the 4th the best. A little out of focus. muy bein

krastian 02.12.2007 12:54 AM

I like the first one the best, but I'm partial to dogs. One or two mos def.

luxinterior 02.12.2007 01:18 AM

3 is precious.

noumenal 02.12.2007 01:19 AM

I vote 4 4.

CHOUT 02.12.2007 02:44 AM

They're all great, EMMAh. I voted for 1 though.

heavium 02.12.2007 03:37 AM

the contrast is best in the first one, also the line from the snout to its ear really fills the picture, then again...it quite the 'classic' innit ?

the third one is more original... if the jury is after something more refreshing i'd go for the third one with the albinooo...

Norma J 02.12.2007 03:56 AM

1 or 2, but all are good. Cute little animals!

nicfit 02.12.2007 03:59 AM

I say :
1 is nice but a bit too "classic", the background does not help much making it more interesting, and the "cut out nose" is a little "technical" flaw. I know I'm splitting hairs, but you never know how this little things might be judged in a contest...

2 i like this one better, all the diagonal lines fill the composition in a good way and the contrast is good, no evident flaws in my opinion, unless you count the bottom left corner a bit too bright. But fuck that, OR, photoshop it ;)

3 i don't like this, the subject is nice (hello mice) but it has a strange "lab" look, if you understand what I mean...background colours make this a bit too plain for my personal tastes.

4 this is interesting, but the (obviouslyly intentional) lack of focusing is maybe a bit too much for a contest that's supposed to judge pet pictures. btw , I think this last one would look better in full colours (if you turned it BW with some software).

My vote : 2!

stereotyp 02.12.2007 04:26 AM

[x] Picture 2

alteredcourse 02.12.2007 04:36 AM

2
the cat looks dead .
good job .

Trasher02 02.12.2007 04:39 AM

One of the first two. I liked the kitty one.

Onani Nic 02.12.2007 05:46 AM

I think the contrast is best in the first, it generally looks sharpest and has the most character. I'm not partial to dogs or cats either.

agree

Toilet & Bowels 02.12.2007 08:05 AM

go for colour

truncated 02.12.2007 10:04 AM

Tough call between 2 and 3. I like the color contrast in 3 best. They're all good, though, nice job. Good luck.

Yeah, the cut out nose is what really bothers me about the first picture, my bad, but I don't think I have the original anywhere :(
Thanks for your honest opinion :)

fishmonkey 02.12.2007 12:55 PM

i really like pic 2

Hip Priest 02.12.2007 12:57 PM

I suspect number 2 offers the best chance of success.

James Blonde 02.12.2007 12:58 PM

James Blonde voted 2, that cat looks bit... evil.

Wow those are really good emma! You're really experienced at this I see. I wish I was good at photography :(.

Anyway, I went with the second option because it has great clarity, the contrast isn't too strong (so it's easier on the eyes), and a great angle. Nice!

Experienced? No not really, I just fuck around. My digital camera really doesn't suit my needs so it takes a lot of work haha. It's hard to get it to focus sometimes.

De nada! I like giving opinions on photos when asked, in fact [OT mode on] -I started going trough all my digital pics lately, I want to set up a decent flicker account as soon as I get a decent internet connection (hopefully soon), and I found myself dissing many of my older pics pointing out flaws and so on just because I "improved" my skills in time and now i find decent at best what a few years ago I tought was great...[OT mode off]
By the way, is yours a digital pictures contest? I mean, you have to send digital files or printed pics? And what's the camera you could end up winning?
Now I'm curious.

too many "decent" in this post.

Richard Pryor on Fire 02.12.2007 02:20 PM

Pic number three is my favorite but I don't know if a rat picture would win....

I do that same thing, a lot of pictures I took in the spring/summer I look at now and feel disgusted for liking them so much haha. All these pictures are from a while ago (the dog one I took in Dec. '05) and I feel I can take better ones now if it weren't me being constantly sidetracked. I did print a nice one of Mouse last month, but my photographer teacher has that.
You can send in digital pictures or mail in prints. You can win a Olympus EVOLT E-500 digital SLR, Olympus Stylus 720 SW, Olympus SP-510 Ultra Zoom, or gift cards for Pedigree and Whiskas. I'm just reading now though that you have to be 18 (which I am not) I'm going to enter as my mom hahaha. My chances of winning are slim anyhow. Or I lie about my age.

ToasterDude84 02.12.2007 04:54 PM

one of my friends is a photographer

your stuff is better though!!!

I do the same thing. I just fuck around. It's surprising how many accidental masterpieces you can get.

king_buzzo 02.12.2007 05:04 PM

choose from the first three, the fourth one is bad

Danny Himself 02.12.2007 05:05 PM

I picked three. It's funny.

the guy is like semi-professional i guess

paid sometimes. its not his real job.

!@#$%! 02.12.2007 08:47 PM

2 is technically better, but 4 has more personality/. however the judges may not see this. the doggie has a lot of expression, but the photo itself, well the blacks are a bit crushed in my lcd screen, perhaps it there were greyers of if you have a film print.

go with your gut, mademoiselle l'artiste? and bestest of wishes.
