Thurston Moore is Dead
|
Quote:
This is the kind of boring bullshit that happens when people let Thurston attempt to write music without Lee and/or Steve ;) |
Jesus Christ, this is atrocious!

LOL where the fuck is john? |
:-(

Doesn't this song follow in the path of the Psychic Hearts work?
now the video, that I can't handle... |
Oh mellow out. It's obvious he was watching a lot of Kate Bush and R.E.M. videos and wanted to try his hand at something similar. Maybe he failed, but he could've made worse choices.
|
It would help if Thurston learned to write more than the one song. It's the exact same riffs and shit every time!
|
His Psychic Hearts stuff stands out against his other solo shit. It's more droney and minimal. In his other albums, he's actually attempting to write fully fleshed out songs. And he hasn't evolved at all as a songwriter. They all have the same progression
|
Isn't this Chelsea Light Moving?
Maybe the rest of the band have disowned it. |
well...
ouch |
He ditched the name "Chelsea Light Moving" and is back to recording under
the handle his mama gave him. Maybe now next time he comes to the Black Cat for a gig the venue will be more than just half-full. Recording some good music would help this as well. |

Tough crowd!! I liked the Chelsea Light Moving album so I hate to pile on, but this song is on the 7" that comes with the LP and when I first played it I thought it was a demo of the last song on the album (which sounds like a rewrite of "Tranquilizer", heh). I was horrified to discover that "Heavenmetal" is the first song on the CD version, and a little surprised to see it's now a (non-CLM) video! Not his finest work, and the rebranding is odd...is CLM finished now that Thurston lives in London?
|
![]() lol its his girlfriend in the video? Kim must be having lots of fun watching this :) |
Quote:
what? Weird. I bought the vinyl as well, so I had no idea. Huh. |

We collectively shit on The Eternal for about two solid years before I realized that its in my top-5 sonic records. Pure hating is just the SYG approach to music ![]() |
Quote:
Yes, his girlfriend is in the video. I doubt Kim would waste her time watching this tripe. |
Quote:
They were married for like 1000 years. You know damned well she watched that shit. twice. ![]() |
Quote:
That's probably exactly why you wouldn't watch that video |
Quote:
I guess if you've been watching Kate Bush and REM videos then being lame is the rational thing to do. |
i just watched it again.
ouch |
Holy shit....
Thurston IS dead. |
I like it (the song)
|
Quote:
I didn't. |
wow this is terrible, I'm really disappointed
|
What's SO wrong about this video exactly?
The song is rather weak and boring bu tthe video is not worse than say the one they made for Dirty singles or Bull in the heather IMHO. artsy fartsy, but heh |
Yes, the video isn't the worst ever produced. It's the song that is awful.

me too. I remember being home from work sick w/ the flu when The Eternal landed in my mailbox. I put it on and laid on the floor and listened to it several times in a row. |

People who aren't Sonic Youth fans are way more dismissive and critical. The fact I started a thread about Thurston's latest music is a clear sign that I still care in some shape or form. I just happen to think his standards have gone down a lot when it comes to writing a good song. He used to be a brilliant songwriter, and occasionally he still seems to do some great stuff when he's messing around in his more free-form ''projects'' (what a word). Chances are that he doesn't care about what me and you have to say anyway. Why should he care? He's made some great music and influenced other musicians and fans a lot more than anyone could ask for. That doesn't mean one should suddenly go deaf and become an idiot. You already have legions of Smiths fans for that sort of thing. |
You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Genteel Death again.
|
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Thurston as a musician and I think that Trees and Demolished Thoughts are a couple of the greatest albums that have been released in recent years. I'm kind of glad that he's decided to drop the "Chelsea Light Moving" and work under his own name. I've seen CLM (when they were under that name) 5 times. I was already bored of the songs in live performance by the 3rd time that I saw them. I've maybe listened to the LP once or twice. I'm just disappointed in the song-writing quality compared to his previous two releases. Compared to his songs with Sonic Youth, particularly with Rather Ripped and The Eternal, I think the quality varies. His guitar-playing on those albums isn't that different from the riffs that he plays on the CLM songs. I think that he may have put more effort into writing lyrics for at least some of the songs on RR and The Eternal. But the CLM songs are him trying to relive minimalist/no-wave stuff and I thought that he really grew as a song-writer with Trees and DT but now he is regressing and not trying anymore and it's just a shame. I don't care for his new song, Detonation, either.
I have no specific complaints about the song Heavenmetal in particular, I feel the same way about it as I do all of the other songs. But the video is one of the worst things I've ever seen. The production is too fancy and it's just not him. I don't think that he's trying to do something new as an artist but he's letting people (or a person) influence his activities too much. Thurston is beyond the bullshit that that video is. |
Fans aren't merciless, we've made a considerable emotional investment in SY.
The Eternal wasn't shat in for two years, you're thinking of Rather Ripped, and it has been shat on for 8 years. |
I also loved RR immediately. I talked at length about it at the time being sort of the inverse of The Whitey Album. T had talked in an interview about being influenced by pop like Miley Cirus or uh maybe it was like Cheetah Girls or Pussycat Dolls or soemthing that Coco was into at the time. They wanted to make SY simple pop. It' s interesting. Plus "Reena" is one of my absolute fav SY songs of 2000's.
|
He definitely should cooperate with Beck more.

This is all my opinion but I won't completely shit on RR. Pink Steam is THE song. I recently decided it was in my top 10 favorite SY songs ever. And I like Reena, Incinerate, Jams Run Free, and Turquoise Boy. I have mixed feelings about Do You Believe In Rapture? Sleepin' Around and Lights Out are downright awful. What A Waste I also have mixed feelings about but not in the same way that I have mixed feelings about DYBIR? I am neutral about Rats, The Neutral (no pun intended), and Or. There is nothing specific that I like or dislike about any of those songs. |

Absolutely no one wants to hear Sonic Youth do 'simple pop' if it just turns out a bunch of lame badly written songs. Every member of Sonic Youth is creative enough to do something interesting and Lee and Kim have fulfilled that post-Sonic Youth with solo and collab work. Thurston just hangs around like he needs to retire already. |
