Desert Island Discs.

An old idea, but a good one.

You choose eight songs (not albums) that you would take with you on a desert island. You also choose one book (you already have the Encyclopeadia Brittanica and the Bible - according to the rules) and an object (that can operate without electricity). You already have a stereo that's battery powered or something.

nicfit 02.14.2007 07:50 AM

Question : without electricity how could you listen to the songs/records??
I'll post a decent list as soon as I can think about something good for me...

Daddylikes 02.14.2007 07:52 AM

Outkast: ATLiens

I suppose it'd be a wind-up record player or something. I dunno. I don't make the rules.

Dead-Air 06.09.2007 01:22 AM

Well, if I'm only going to get 8 songs, I'm going to shoot for loooong mostly (though no "Close to the Edge"...)

Sun Ra - "Atlantis"
Sonic Youth - "Diamond Sea"
Autechre - "Drone" (from the Peel Session)
Can - "Oh Yeah!"
Lou Reed - "Metal Machine Music" (arguably a single "song", but if I have to look at it as 4 songs, then, I'll pick side 4)
Velvet Underground - "Sister Ray"

Then a couple short gems to round it out, that I could play over and over and still love:

Brian Eno - "Everything Merges with the Night"
Yo La Tengo - "You Can Have It All"

I don't read books over very often so the book part is hard...

Now Wait for Last Year by Phillip K. Dick

I hate hypotheticals. How could I ever pick just 8 songs? I'd die listening to only 8 songs, no matter how fantastically awesome they were.

I'm bored, so I thought I'd give this a jump start again.

Remember you get to choose eight songs, a book of your choice (the bible is, according to convention, already provided) and any object you like. Issues of electricity should be conveniently ignored.

Oh yeah, the other rule is that whatever you take will be replaced if it's ever broken. I'm making that bit up but anyway.

gmku 08.20.2008 11:00 AM

My solution: these 8 songs are in an invisible loop in the air. You say a command, like "Songs on," and the music begins. Say "Video," and you get either the MTV video or the full cover (back, front, innersleeve, gatefold) of the original LP.

The guitar is stored, in its case, in a climate-controlled, weather-proof bunker.

I have two copies of the book, but FedEx implanted a chip in both to detect when either becomes damaged, in which case they overnight, at no expense to me, fresh new copies.

Hey, it's my fantasy island, right?
