Black People

Opinions?

I always get nervous when talking to people of a different race. It's nothing racist, because I really pay attention to what I say to ensure I don't say something that may descriminate them, their race, or heritage.

I've talked to a lot of people who feel the same way. I don't think it's BAD to feel this way, although it may be something you would want to work on. I mean, you don't want to hurt peoples feelings, so at least you care. I think it has a lot to do with how you were raised. My parents had all kinds of friends of different backgrounds, race, and whatever, so I see all people just as people, I don't draw lines. I used to have a hard time understanding people who see things like you do. I always saw it as racism. Now I understand that it's just a matter of getting comfortable with people who aren't exactly like you. Everybody is different, and the more you immerse yourself into other people's lives and really get to know them, the less awkward it will feel.

afterthefact 02.22.2007 02:43 PM

Wow, I just realized how well my sig goes along with what I was saying :)

I absolutely love your signature, and I quoted it just a few days ago. But yeah, when I was very little I used to be racist, not knowing that it was a horrible thing. It was in grade 1 and 2, and my friend's friend was black, and he always made fun of me, so in retort I called him "dirty". I feel absolutely horrible about it now, and I could see why he doesn't like it. In addition, my stepdad is also racist. I mean, I guess instances that happened when growing up influences the perception in the future. I'm definitely not racist, but I can't say I feel as comfortable around a black person as I am with white people. I guess it's just natural because I live in a community that's caucasian dominant.

Rob Instigator 02.22.2007 03:11 PM

I love talking to peope who are "different" from me. It is the best way to learn anything.

I get scared when talking to generic white people. I do not understand their Gap references and their obsession with Mall visits and top 40 radio.

ha!

when we are uncomfortable that means we are ready to learn something new. if you spend your whole life "comfortable" you are in essence static, with no betterment, no improvement, no growth.

are you talking with preppy high school students, or some really sad adults?

matt g 02.22.2007 03:35 PM

I hate the Irish.

cuetzpalin 02.22.2007 03:39 PM

no problem with different races

I couldn't agree with you more. I barely socialize with most people because of this reason. Most of the people in my class are like that. They all just talk about snowboarding. As I type they're blasting (what i think is) Linkin Park. I don't find too much interesting quirks about them and can't relate to them at all. Socializing with them doesn't really improve them or me in any way.

weird weird thread, go buy a plane ticket and travel you will get over that in a day, but still i would avoid starting threads like this. perhaps the next thread could be Gay People: choice not biology?

haha. I actually plan after college to join Amnesty and volunteer working in a 3rd world country for a year. I'd love to do that

Rob Instigator 02.22.2007 03:58 PM

you know what is funny to me?

let's take the whole "homosexuality - self-chosen, or genetic" argument.

I say what does it matter?

if it is genetic that's that.

If it is a personal choice, that is EVEN MORE VALID, for a personal choice is what a free society is all about!

man I hates me stupid people you know?

(this was just a rant, not aimed at anyone here)

Rob Instigator 02.22.2007 03:59 PM

I hear there are parts of London and NYC and L.A. that qualify for third world status. come to houston and hang out!

king_buzzo 02.22.2007 04:23 PM

nig nig's pwn. i love them.

Prisstina 02.22.2007 04:54 PM

I've been around black people since I was a youngin' so they don't bother me or make me feel awkward at all. The "nigga" stuff gets pretty obnoxious, though.

king_buzzo 02.22.2007 04:55 PM

nigga stuff is cool.

'damn nigga'

its not as 'nigger' but nigga is more like a homie way, so people use it

Prisstina 02.22.2007 04:57 PM

The word itself doesn't bother me, just hearing it ALL DAMN DAY at school gets reallllllll old.

Rob Instigator 02.22.2007 05:01 PM

what bothers me is dipshits who don;t recognize the genius and greatness and overall fantasticity of one MC Ricky D, Slick Rick Da Ruler!

I dunno, you just probably don't see enough people of different races in your area, I'm so used to it here, I usually don't even notice - just another person.

True, I'm much better than I am though. I'm from quebec, and on this side of the border it's terribly caucasian. There's 1 black student to every 70 white students about. If I cross the border and go into Ottawa, it's surprisingly different. It's about 50/50 even, but I don't live in ottawa :(

I absolutely hate how Snoop Doggy Dogg gets all the credit for Lodi Dodi, when it was originally done by Slick Rick. Snoop at least mentions Slick at the beginning. I love both artists, but geez.

max 02.22.2007 08:10 PM

in all seriousness, i think everyone should get over the thing in itself: races.

no fucking races, in my humble opinion. i only know of THE HUMAN RACE. that is it. no other bullshit. colors are just fucking colors, so fucking what?

Terminal Pharmacy said it better, like Chout and Rob did. all precious advices. i'd add a few flicks that could help for better understanding:

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD, DAWN OF THE DEAD, DAY OF THE DEAD, LAND OF THE DEAD by George A. Romero... difference is the contrary of equality, states Wiki.

i'd say, kill prejudice before it kills.

RanaldoNecro 02.22.2007 08:17 PM

Hey Matt,

You hate the Irish? What do you hate about them?
