Reckless Records (London) closing

RECKLESS RECORDS CLOSURE

Sadly we have to announce that Reckless Records has had to close down and has gone into liquidation after 24 years. The business of dealing in secondhand records and compact discs has become more and more difficult due to lots of factors, particularly the growth of internet trading, both at new and secondhand levels, and the impossibility of trying to keep abreast of falling prices in High Street stores and online retailers. The business affairs of Reckless Records are being dealt with by a liquidation company: there's unlikely to be a resurrection.

So regrettably it's goodbye from all of us at Reckless. There were lots of good times, but they've gone and it doesn't look promising for similar businesses.

Thanks and goodbye from all of us........

This is quite sad. No record-buying visit to central London will ever be the same again :(

jon boy 03.05.2007 09:21 AM

its (nearly) always sad when a record shop closes down.

screamingskull 03.05.2007 09:32 AM

aww, that sucks!!, goodbye to another independent music store hello to another tesco.

floatingslowly 03.05.2007 09:51 AM

it's never good to hear about music stores closing. there are so few good ones to go to these days.

oklahoma city has shit for music stores.

the only "independent" store near me is really small and never has what I want.

I had to buy from iTunes this weekend. :(

Danny Himself 03.05.2007 11:08 AM

Meh. Ebay is my favorite indie record store.

50 % off everything.I'd go and check it out,if i was you.

sonicl 03.05.2007 11:11 AM

I'm in London on Sunday, so maybe I will.

jon boy 03.05.2007 11:13 AM

thats good news about the 50% thing but by the time i get there all the best stuff will be gone i bet.

pokkeherrie 03.05.2007 11:14 AM

Oh, that's sad. If you can't even survive in a big city like London then where can you?
They looked decent; quite a bit of vinyl... mostly focused on "indie rock " though, not so much stuff in the avantgarde section and maybe a bit expensive on some second hand things but that was probably also because i'm calculating in euros.

50% off... did you get anything, eikrop?

Iain 03.05.2007 04:53 PM

NO WAY!

Any good stuff?

sarramkrop 03.05.2007 07:51 PM

Some good UK garage 12'''s and things.I've found it hard to get stuff that really interested me so i run to the basemenet in
Music Exchange.Reckless never tickled my fancy anyway.

so far, yes, quite a bit. i've been going through gradually and i'm about half way through. i have them sorted into three piles at the moment, "to listen to", "good" and "bad".

the "good" pile consists thusly:

DNA/Indepence - split (not the DNA of no new york fame, these bands are both from finland i think)
splintered - link
the raspberries - overnight sensation/hands on you
tar - solution 8
high tension - british hustle
johnny guitar watson - it's a damn shame
bum gravy - fat digester
tipper gore's anal retentive love children - make me an outlaw
the cult - rain
junior disprol - fight club
paul b. davis - enter the mystical faggot
downpour - don't go breakin' my art
ultrascope - three week melody
junior tucker - one of the poorest people
winterstrand/lenz - split
filthkick - hand crushed heart
the o'jays - love train
superconductor - the most popular man in the world
fringe benefit - all in vain (this isn't good at all, i just bought it because i thought it was the worst name for a band ever)
jfk - sexodus
don-e - peace in the world
the hedrons - be my friend
joni mitchell - in france the kiss on main street
le pamplemousse - le spank
leon huff - i'm jivin', i'm jammin'
trance - notre-dame de l'oubli
beenie man - hmm hmm
the gymslips - silly egg
sweet sensation - touched by magic
the jones girls - at peace with woman
tar - teetering
bomb the bass - 10 seconds to terminate
splitered - hilt
eddie henderson - prance on
antony m - consumer device

Eh? both bands?! fuckin' bollocks, that's Circle's first 7" from 1991 (which I haven't heard). From what I know, it's not a split single.
Pretty desirable item these days, you know.

you are talking about this one? yes?

yes! it cost me 17 pence, which is approximately 25 euro cents. how much do you reckon it's worth on ebay? (FYI i'm not selling it)

Phlegmscope 03.13.2007 08:26 PM

This might give you some clue. The starting price was 3€ and right now it's going at 24€.

how long till that finishes?

i had no idea what it was when i bought it i was just attracted to the cheapness of the cover. it's good though, but i would never have guessed it was circle from the way it sounds.

demonrail666 03.14.2007 09:31 AM

I tended to use Reckless more as a place to sell rather than buy records. Still, sad to see it go. No doubt to make way for yet another theme bar. Soho is going to shit.

Washing Machine 03.14.2007 09:49 AM

WE have a simular problem in Cardiff, but ours is even more dire. Spillers Records (The Oldest Record shop in the world) is having to close because they are building a big new shopping development next door and putting the rent sky high. Its sad because not only is it historically important but it really is the centre of the music scene in Cardiff. Its the only place in Cardiff you can pick up anything obscure.

The Good news is it seems the front of the shop is listed.

demonrail666 03.14.2007 11:38 AM

I feel a bit hypocritical when it comes to record shops closing. After all, 90% of the CDs I buy are from online stores like Amazon.

Iain 03.14.2007 01:46 PM

I don't think Spillers will be going anywhere for a while. I think the people that control the rent have eased off a little bit as a result of the petition but I guess they will hike the rent up eventually. I wouldn't have thought it would close much before that whole area is redeveloped and that's not due until 2008. It will be utterly, utterly hideous from the look of the plans. I was up in cineworld the other day trying to get a good look at the demolished buildings and it struck me that it would be really ace if the just flattened that whole area and made a huge square like some sort of grand old European city. Instead it will be a shiny shit glass nightmare.

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 02:04 PM

Question for whoever happened to visit camden market recently: do they still have those stalls where you could buy tapes of bootlegs for a fiver?I have a few of those.

sonicl 03.14.2007 02:31 PM

It's CDs these days, for 15 quid, I think. And DVDs.

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 02:38 PM

That's sad, i used to find good stuff on them.Fifteen quid for a bootleg cdr? That's outrageous!!!

demonrail666 03.14.2007 02:41 PM

£15 really is outrageous. Oh the days when you could get a tape of Head of David at the Clarendon for a fiver.

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 02:43 PM

Last time i bought i dvd in camden, it was a velvet underground one and i paid £ 20 for it.The quality is atrocious, though.

jon boy 03.14.2007 02:58 PM

is it that one you recorded for me? i still have that tape to send you of ashtray navigations stuff saramkropp. pm me your new address.

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 03:01 PM

Has it got maureen blinfolded on it?

jon boy 03.14.2007 03:02 PM

no its just them jamming and a little kid running around. i think its nico's son?

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 03:11 PM

Oh, that's the simphony of sound one.Did you enjoy it?That's a mean performance by them.

jon boy 03.14.2007 03:14 PM

i did! it was really great but not long enough. what i really want is some of the epi stuff. does any exist?

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 03:21 PM

If you mean footage, there is little to nothing and you can find some of it on youtube if you look for it.Bootleg-wise, there are a few that do the rounds and the quality is genrally rubbish but if you don't mind that, they are joy to behold. If we all pray together tonight, John Cale might decide to start putting everything that he has on cassette out and be done with it.I'm pretty sure that some unseen footage is out there, but i've never understood why they are being so precious about it.That could also have something to do with The Andy Warhol Foundation people who are an odd bunch.

jon boy 03.14.2007 03:46 PM

maybe they are still trying to archive it all. they have had 30 years so you think they would have got round to it by now!

Toilet & Bowels 03.14.2007 03:50 PM

someone told me nico used to fuck her son.

sarramkrop 03.14.2007 03:55 PM

It's not far from the truth that they had a really odd relationship. While living in Brixton Ari would share the squalor of his mother's room sometimes, and that involved watching her doing heroin constantly and stinking like a farmer.Have you ever read 'Songs They Never Play On The Radio'?Great book, very sad but very amusing too.

jon boy 03.14.2007 04:00 PM

i prefer not think about that stuff. its hard though when you hear some of the music.

Tell me about it, it'll be as bad as Cardiff Bay soon. They are like any City, trying to tear down everything thats scummy (although I like things scummy) I'm happy about the new library though. It really is about time.

Check out my 'Save Spillers Records' thread...ive posted a Culture Show segment about the shop...

sarramkrop 06.19.2007 06:42 AM

There a new shop in place of Reckless Records, now.
