Why no name for SY's fanbase?

Just a thought that ran through my head. The Grateful dead have dead-heads. Jimmy Buffet has parrot-heads. Kiss has the Kiss Army. The ICP has juggalos. Lady Gaga has Lil' Monsters.

Is there, or has there ever been, a name for the 800 people around the world that love Sonic Youth? If so, what is it? If not, why not?

Genteel Death 01.13.2015 03:54 PM

That's a great idea. Sign me up for it.

Pookie 01.13.2015 07:06 PM

Let me know the result.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.13.2015 08:19 PM

What if i'm already in a committed relationship with being a confirmed dead-head? Also, while both party hearty who would win in a bar brawl, the Kiss Army relying on "grown man strength" or the rambunctious now 30 something Juggalos? While meth and general low lifery of the ICP crowd seems a safe bet can we really count out all the bar room brawling experience of the Kiss fan veteranos?

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.13.2015 08:22 PM

But if they want to brawl about the Dead?

at least on this board and in some publications, it seemed to be the name we have!

i like the idea of there being dozens of names emerging after Rob began a thread about it though!! :D :)

i will add "stereo sanctifiers" to this list!!
and then also add "fuzzy faces" and "mille feuille"

No one is taking the Juggalos vs Kiss Army bet? VegasInsider just updated the odds and Kiss Army are the favorites at +315 but don't sleep on the sleeper, as while the Juggalos line is -500 they don't get any sleep and a serious meth binge could amp them up enough for an upset

Rob Instigator 01.14.2015 02:02 PM

juggalos fight dirty. they would win

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.14.2015 02:44 PM

That's true, plus Kiss Army follow the David Crosby school of thought which states, "why get into fights when every body knows its better to go to bed with a woman."

Rob Instigator 01.14.2015 04:40 PM

indeed.

Phish-heads would be monkey-stomped

What about the Beliebers?

or the three people who love 4 Non Blondes?

Rob Instigator 01.14.2015 04:41 PM

I think Sonic Lifers is most fitting for us all.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.14.2015 05:22 PM

I think the Beleibers would be into some kind of dance competition. Perhaps they could get into a breaking battle with the Uncle Jamms Army crowd?

but we do belong to smth, this. and its nice. very nice.
no need to take it to the cool etc path. i surely dont think that way.
i played along as you saw, but at some point felt i should be honest.

Rob Instigator 01.16.2015 09:16 AM

always be honest.

I was just curious, because every band that has fervent fanatics is given a name by the media, or by themselves. SY must always fly under the radar I guess.

Nefeli 01.16.2015 11:28 AM

yes, i think its smth like the latter.
sy fans arent that distinguished as of other bands and/or of other periods in time, where music and specific fashion went along.
or are WE??? ...

anyhoo, fan base name game is fun.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 01.16.2015 11:53 AM

We were a pivotal part of the no wave scene and part of the foundation of the mainstreaming of "alternative", "grunge", and "indie" as one of the first underground bands from these scenes to sign to a major label. However it seems clear that Nirvana usurped Sonic Youth's mainstream potential.

Rob Instigator 01.16.2015 12:22 PM

the "near-vana's?"

Just listened again excellent acoustic version of Leeīs Home Chds. SY is really not dead to me, it lives in these great solo works! But as important SY is to me, I donīt need to be called in any name as a SY fan, I think itīs more for the youngsters.

Is that a rule that you've ever had to apply in other situations?
