Seems pricey. But would be a hell of a way to see in the New Year! |

Pffft, please. I wouldn't hesitate for a nanosecond to bail out on friends and family for a T/Okkyung/Ikue/Zorn show. Quote:
I'm more broke than Joe Exotic (who was "broke as shit") and the amount seems pretty good for a set by those cats. Last two shows I went to, the front row (a proper seat in the first case, a show-up-really-early-to-stand-pressed-against-the-fence-[and-I-sure-as-all-that-is-fuck-am-not-complaining] in the second) was 50 bucks or so. |
Shit I wish I lived in NYC sometimes. Like ... now.
|
On New Years Eve in NYC that is a bargain. It's very generous!
for instance the 8 pm show at birdland is $75 for The Birdland Big Band + Special Guest Vocalist/Saxophonist Darmon Meader (New York Voices) whoever the fuck they are I'm sure they play great $135 @ The JAzz Standard to see the Dr. Lonnie Smith Octet (includes a 3 course meal) For $60 you get a bar stool at City Winery (former knitting factory ownser) to see the Fab Faux at 7 pm - but that is sold out. You're gonna be standing on line for awhile to to ensure you get in, the Stone doesn't hold that many people. maybe 120? |

Thurston Moore - St George's Hall, Liverpool May 30th
"Thurston Moore is best known for being the co-founder of legendary alternative rock group Sonic Youth. His use of unusual tunings and distorted sounds have had an impact on experimental and post-punk music the world over, and he was ranked by Rolling Stone amongst the greatest guitarists of all time. Moore has collaborated with writers, musicians and artists as varied as Yoko Ono, William Burroughs, Merce Cunningham and Sean Lennon. Himself a poet, he is also an avid reader and a publisher – as well as a fan of The Liverpool Poets. As The Thurston Moore Band embarks on a world tour to promote their latest album, RocknRoll Consciousness, Moore stops off in Liverpool to perform a specially commissioned musical response to The Mersey Sound." www.ticketquarter.co.uk/Online/thurston-moore |

yes, yes, and I'm on the bill too! :) |
Just got back home from Mexico City after seeing Thurston Moore and Eva Prinz performing at Festival Poesía en Voz Alta, curated by Anne Waldman. Eva Prinz started by reading short poems she said she had just written in the morning, inspired by images she had seen in Mexico City. A poem dedicated to Thurston, about him bringing noise into a context of silence. All in all, she struggled a lot to read/speak in Spanish, and her moments of most clarity occured when she finally recited in English a poem dedicated to Anne Waldman.
Thurston's set consisted of some poems first, and then some music. Despite the recurrence of technical issues (language barriers are powerful things), he approached things in a good mood. Not much euphoria during this part of the show, except by one fan who was constantly yelling to Thurston. After the show was over, I was told that some people got upset and asked for the dude to be removed, and security then escorted him out of there so he missed the highlight of the event: Thurston played "Speak To The Wild", "Cease Fire", and even an encore which consisted of a very beautiful jam. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Holy shit this pic looks just like the cover of loveless. My Bloody Thurston! Many thanks for your comments on the gig. |
Thank you. Some lucky shots on my part, I guess. Below are a few other pics I took. My favourite is the last one. Thurston and Eva Prinz are very active in this festival, today they would present a sound installation at La Casa del Lago. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough spare time to go spend a few days in Mexico City and catch as much of it as possible. Happy about last night's show, though.
It all was professionally filmed by a local TV station (TV UNAM), so I think there is a huge possibilty they will broadcast it at some point. I should try to upload my recording soon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Just found out TV UNAM/Cultura UNAM en Directo was broadcasting the whole performance in real time, and thankfully it is still available on Youtube (you might wanna start at the 2 hours, 10 minutes mark if you'd only wanna watch Eva Prinz and Thurston Moore's recital--also, the file can be downloaded with the DownloadHelper extension of Firefox if you would wish):
