recommend me some KRS records
so i just got paid & i'm in a minor record-shopping spree. just picked up some bardo pond lps on ebay, plus all the white magic stuff available in drag city.
i'm at the KRS site looking at the casual dots cd but i'd like to pad the bag with a little extra... waiting for deerhoof's new record to be available on LP again (i'm not getting the cd). so... what would you suggest? please throw ideas & tell me why you like the stuff.... thanks! http://www.killrockstars.com/ ps im not interested in the decemberists |
the thrones
|
UNWOUND UNWOUND UNWOUND.
Oh yeah one more...UNWOUND. Because they're the meanest, the loudest, the craziest and so many more things that every band should be. |
WNICO is my fav band that krs ever put out. they were from japan.
easier to find though would be Huggy Bear. also ruling. |
xbxrx, xiu xiu, hella, the advantage, qvaris by nnck, thrones and of course OOIOO's s/t
|
Erase Errata-anything
Gossip-anything NNCK-qvaris Xiu Xiu- Fabulous Muscles |
thanks after listening to mp3 & giving some thought i think i'll go with the 1st OOIOO which is awesome and i've mooched on mp3 long enough.

whatever you don't have by the almighty DEERHOOF, get it.
unwound |

oh i have it AAALLLLL!!! except for friend opportunity, but i put myself on the email for the LP reissue-- hopefully soon. did i tell you i met one of greg saunier's old bandmates? but anyway ha ha also im ordering i think that krazy DVD of the milkman highschool performance-- looks wonderful Quote:
by "doesnt rock my world" i meant i felt no emotional affinity for it-- but i'll try to give it another go... |
I didn't at first with Unwound but mostly because I heard their last album first, which is completely different than everything else they ever did. But it's still the best album i've ever heard. Ever,
|
see i have this genetic problem that i dislike most male vocalists.
i'm strange... it's true! they play very well but then the mouth opens and i find myself daydreaming of kim gordon. there are male voices i like but they are few. |
Huggy Bear was on KRS for a minute right? I know some of there shit is on Wija some uk label, but anywho, Huggy Bear is that ole' bullshit. Dissenthentric Penetration is my jam.
|
ordered!!!
besides the ooioo + casual dots i ordered a hoof tshirt & some other fun crap the most interesting purchase however promises to be this: http://www.buyolympia.com/killrockstars/Item=DHFB it looks fucking insane. i love it already. |
ohh right! thrones just recently got out of print, the only thing that's in print is a day late, a dollar short on southern lord. distros should have the actual albums as it went out of print like two months ago.

Serious? Thats the only unwound album I never listen to. Yeah pretty much everything unwound did on KRS rules, especially the future of what. Also get their s/t 7" (The one on my signiture ;) ) best record ever probably. Other KRS bands: Born against Long hind legs (Unwound side project) Men's recovery project Godheadsilo Bikini kill (duh) Bratmobile Huggy bear The bangs Cold cold hearts (Bratmobile side project band) team dresch Sleater kinney Excuse 17 (SK side project band) Heavens to betsy (SK side project band) Elliot smith comet gain there's probably more, but these are the most awesome! |
Hah-hah-hah, I thought you meant KRS-One there for a minute.
... ...Alright alright, I'm gone. EDIT: In any case, KRS re-released a brilliant compilation of the band Kleenex/Liliput's work from the early '80s. They were a very influencial, very good post-punk band and you might want to investigate. |
Quote:
personally, I feel Criminal Minded is some of his best work. this thread is about KRS-1 right?? :) |
ha! funny bastard!
actually i would not mind some krs1 records. never been much into hiphop except for some public enemy cds i had oh ages ago. they were lost/stolen/destroyed between the many address changes. |
Quote:
KRS-1 > Public Enemy it's not even fair to put either of them into the same category as to what defines hip hop these days.... honestly, early hip hop is no different than punk rock to me. the new jack crap that gets played today makes me insane (this applies to both hip hop and punk). this concludes my well-intentioned hijack and I now return you to your regularly-scheduled broadcast. |
no no, recommend me some krs-1, eh?
i always sort of wanted to but got derailed |
both Miranda July EPs are fantastically weird. I can't reccomend them enough.
Oh that rhymes... Does that rhyme... DOES IT????????????? |
Quote:
oh, good call, i was wondering... i have the pulling the pussy hairs one from the whitney (not sure if that's here) & oh it was bizarre. i love that woman. |
Quote:
start with Criminal Minded and By All Means Necessary (My Philosophy is the bomb-track) by Boogie Down Productions, if you like it....move forward chronologically. :p http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KRS-One...wn_Productions (actually, maybe start with By All Means Necessary.....My Philosophy is worth it) [edit: I changed my mind again. just go with the retrospective) http://www.cduniverse.com/search/xx/...rospective.htm |
By All Means Necessary is less skeletal; I prefer it. Illegal Business is a friggin' anthem.

Well, at that point in time, Leaves was exactly the type of album i was searching for. But the more and more I listened to the more I wanted more Unwound and then got into everything else. It's been quite a journey. |
Quote:
yeah, it took me ages to get their albums, but it was so worth it. Unwound are by far my favourite non - hardcore band. |

Did Miranda July do that song arky girl? I love that track! |
no one mentioned the only band that ever mattered in the history of rock music................the frumpies! universal order of armageddon were good too.
everyone else mentioned all the other great artists. even though born against was never a kill rock stars band. |
