Two Bassist Bands

Does anybody know of any bands where there are two bassists? It's an idea I've been thinking about for a while.

I know Swans had two bassists in there earlier days.

Пятхъдесят Шест 04.09.2007 08:21 PM

Hm. Black Eyes?

drrrtyboots 04.09.2007 08:22 PM

I don't know of any that do it full-time or mostly.

That sounds like a great idea. Would you have one playing a bassline and another playing high register stuff, akin to a lead guitar guitar line?

Пятхъдесят Шест 04.09.2007 08:30 PM

The Ex have been known to play with two bassists, but I think thats rare.

Surely there are more...can't think of any.

CHOUT 04.09.2007 08:31 PM

Dos

Spinal Tap (3 on Big Bottom)

Ned's Atomic Dustbin (bleech)

Everyneurotic 04.09.2007 08:35 PM

if you count the double necked bass, it's four basses.

I know there are many, but the only one I can think of at the moment is Acid Mothers Temple.

P.S. - I caught a glimpse of Kawabata at the tokyo airport, he was paying for food at a cafe, he looked awesome - wearing a cloak/trench coat/robe and bunny slippers.

flipper
firewitch (aussie band, kinda doomy. One dude plays regular bass and one plays slide-bass)
dirtbombs (i think?)

Everyneurotic 04.10.2007 01:22 AM

flipper had two people play bass but never at the same time, bruce loose and will shatter would switch between vocals and bass.

ZEROpumpkins 04.10.2007 02:29 AM

Sonic Youth with Ibold on the RR tour. Doesn't really count though.

nicfit 04.10.2007 03:22 AM

Dianogah.

heavium 04.10.2007 08:37 AM

monkey boy: two bass players, one drummer, i believe, check out a song called 'planet paul pope'

brassy: not sure about this one, i remember them vaguely..never really liked them

bass extremes: three bassists, all with diff tunings and stuff..pretty progressive

fingersmoran: one bassist and a drummer, but the bass player uses a looper all the time

Something like that. But my idea would have it so the guitar would concentrate on the rhythm, leaving the full concentration on the bass. I was thinking one bass would be doing something lead guitarish, while the other would do some noisy chord things.

heavium 04.10.2007 09:00 AM

joy division ? ;-)

tesla69 04.10.2007 09:07 AM

I once saw The Melvins with 2 bassists, it was when Joe Preston was subbing for Lorax while she was sick, and then she was coming back to the band, before dickweed canned her, and then they moved to LA and sucked out loud. the end.

they have beautiful packaging on their 7" singles.

MellySingsDoom 04.10.2007 04:33 PM

Has anyone mentioned Cop Shoot Cop yet?

atsonicpark 04.10.2007 05:23 PM

Bleech?

Ned's Atomic Dustbin - God Fodder is GREAT

DJ Rick 04.10.2007 05:30 PM

There was a Canadian slow-grind band during the powerviolence era called Seized who had three bassists.

There's a band currently from Vancouver called Modern Creatures who have a hi-bass and lo-bass and drums...catchy stuff, too: http://www.myspace.com/moderncreatures

Forensic Scene 04.10.2007 08:49 PM

dos (duh!)

CHOUT 04.10.2007 09:03 PM

The cure uses two basses on the song Primary, and use a Fender 6 string bass a lot in conjunction with regular bass.

soapbars 04.10.2007 09:33 PM

The Fall, current line up has 2 bass players

they are working on more songs to do a proper album, and i think that myspace page is their only website.

i've been wanting to interview them, will let you know what's up with them.

_slavo_ 04.11.2007 02:31 AM

There's a wonderful and highly underrated band in Czech republic called GNU, which has 2 bass players in it and plays raw noise rock in the likes of Killdozer, Tar, Cop Shoot Cop etc.

check out their myspace: http://www.myspace.com/gnurock

They run also this very vivid HC/punk label called Silver Rocket there:

www.silver-rocket.org

no, they did not pay me for posting me, although one of the band members is my friend :)
