kind of a weird question, but it's for a good reason!!
for those of you who have an ipod....which kind do you have. i think i have a good idea of what the results will be.
I'm buying a video 60gb this summer, because I like having MP3 + Records over CD's now. Mixtapes are swell too.
okay, do you have one now? i've been having a vinly obsession myself lately too!
Not right now, no.
my creative zen touch has been dropped on concrete, thrown at walls on accident, and dropped so many times and there's barely any scratches. twenty gigs for 229. i'd get one of these.
i have a small one, non ipod though.
I have a 30 gig video...
What is the good reason? |
i have a 20g ipod it rules you can actually hack them to release their full recording potential of 24bit 96khz which is great, and i recommend not having your mp3 any lower than 192khz
I have a 30GB Creative Nomad Zen Extra. Had it about a year and a half and never have problems with it. I have over 6,000 songs on it, and I could probably fit another couple thousand. It's bulkier than an IPod, but I prefer something bigger than having something smaller and easier to lose.
As a non-ipodder (too much vinyl/ ludditism), I was wondering how many actual albums you can store on them... I'm thinking that, as I buy an awful lot of music, how many of my CD's is it realistically going to store? I'm thinking that for people with CD collections of less than 150-odd, it's probably quite easy, but as mine is nudging into the 1,000 mark, I wouldn't seriously be able to put everything on one i-pod (or whatever), would I?
it depends on which ipod you buy! the ipod mini, which is the one i have, is 4GB so it will hold 1,000 songs. and the normal sized ipod holds 10,0000 songs i believe. so it really depends on how many songs you have!
Well, it's not really a question of the number of songs, surely? It must be about the amount of information on the CD. For instance, were I to convert, say, my Melt banana stuff, then I would have an awful lot of quite small peices of information, their songs being shorter. If I were to convert, say, Fushitusha's 'I saw it! That which before I could only sense...", which is a about 90-odd minutes long (over two parts), then that would take up about the same amount of space as lots of MB songs... So, the basic question is - What is the physical information limit of an i-pod, and how much information does a 70-ish minute CD convert to?
hmmmm right now my ipod says i'm using 2.06GB out of 4GB, and i have 1.3 days worth of music on it, which would be 32 hours!! so i'd say that since mine is a 4GB it can probably hold 48 hrs worth of music.
So, by that estimation, 40gb would by roughly 480 hrs. And, following the guesstimates, that would be in the region of 480 CDs. Which is still no where near enough, at ten times the capacity of your current ipod. I suspect it'll be a few years before I even consider getting one.
I have the 30BG 5th generation video IPod. It's awesome, i can store also Quicktime videos and photos on it, i am also getting used to that retarted ITunes program and it was generally worth the money.
I only have one big problem with it - the battery life. shit, has anybody experienced the same thing???? in the manual it says, it should play up to 14hours on one charging, but to me it only lasts like 2 hours and then dies. is there something wrong? any hints? |
mine last for a couple of days but i don't have the back light on. maybe if you turn it off it will last as long as it says
on a 20gig you can hold about 3000 songs at 192kbps i don't have my whole collection on mine or either on my laptop, im waiting to buy an extrenal harddrive so i can chop and change what is on, i have 1100 cds and a few hundred vinyl so no it wont all fit, as i said before you shouldnt go below 192kbps below that the music is compressed too much and starts getting to close to telephone hold music quality.
the back light and videos will decrease your battery life very quickly you will get nearly the full 14hours with just music and remember to extend the battery life you need to flatten it once per month |

But does it make a difference that an overwhelming proportion of my CD's are not 11 tracks, 3-5 minutes songs?
Ridiculous to argue from my point of view, I simply don't want one of the buggers, and how long would it take to put the entirety of my CD collection on there? |
How long would it take? 15-45 minutes? I don't know I've never done that many. I know the 11 tracks/3-5 minute thing but I'm just giving you an average.
glice it is time consuming ripping your collection onto your hard drive before putting onto pod, i don't have my whole collection on my but it is very easy to take stuff off and put some on, it is very handy having a couple of hundred albums in a small machine, i use mine for work a great deal for house music when audiences are arriving etc, so i have all of my jazz all of my classical, plus all the stuff i listen to a shit load and some stuff i listen to occasionally, they are worth the money i would not be to concerned about fitting your whole collection on the thing though.
Fair enough indeed. I'm actually considering getting one because my tape collection is not getting listened to lately. I've got about 300 90-minute tapes which I'm considering converting, mainly because tapes are getting less and less viable for me.
Termianl Pharmacy-I had assumed he had ripped his CD's to his CPU already. But if not then it will take a couple of days to rip them all. But if they are already on the CPU then shouldn't take more than 45 minutes to put them all on an ipod.
I don't see the point of putting them on my computer when my computer is in the same room as my stereo, which naturally has infinitely better speakers.
you need to, to be able to put them on an ipod or iriver or what ever
every few days i change the material on mine because at most i can get 9 hours of music, thats after sacreficing quality.
i have a 4g 40 gig iPod, but it's filled up and i only use it when i don't feel like playing a record or cd. i'm waiting for apple to release the 80 gig or *gasp* 100 gig iPod before i buy another.
i don't really care for the idea of playing video on the thing, though. i just like having a bajillion tons of music available to listen to at any time. |
i have a broken 20gb color ipod

how did your ipod break? |
I have a Nano
does the nano suck as much as i think it does?
I think it is alright mine only holds 500 songs but it is compact and very easy to use
i don't like the nano! my brother has one and i think it's way too small. i feel like i'm gonna break it. and it only holds 500 songs yet it was more than the ipod mini which looks better and holds double the songs. but if you like it then it's okay.
My parents went to China and I said to them to get me an ipod, that is what they got me so that is why i have it, i would have prefered a bigger one as i have heaps more cds to that did not fit, i am thinking of buying a bigger one.

what does it mean to flatten a battery??? (sorry I'm no native speaker) |
_slavo_ first where are you from?
the battery supllies the electricity so the player can have power to run the ipod so using video and audio at the same time drains the power quicker because it needs more electricity to process the information, certain batterys nedd to disharge fully on a monthly type basis so they charge to their full capacity better and extend the life, and the ipod batteries are of this kind |

terminal, first, I am from slovakia as you can guess by getting a glimpse at my 'Location' second, I don't need to have explained what a battery is. I guess I know that already. but anyway, thanks for extended info. |
sorry bout that slavo
