Recomend me some Cure and Smiths

Where should I start in?

krastian 04.16.2007 12:59 AM

The Cure-Boys Don't Cry, Poronography, Disintegration
The Smiths- Self titled, and The Queen is Dead

What are ya, a fag or something?

SynthethicalY 04.16.2007 01:01 AM

Something like it.

edit- I must... before giving it to krastian again.

krastian 04.16.2007 01:02 AM

Join the club.

SynthethicalY 04.16.2007 01:04 AM

I think I did that when i was a young 'un.

krastian 04.16.2007 01:05 AM

But srsly, listen to those albums.

SynthethicalY 04.16.2007 01:06 AM

Ok, thanks man. Next paycheck I am going to Borders and buy what I can find, if not itunes.

sarramkrop 04.16.2007 01:57 AM

The Smiths:

Hatful Of Hollow
The Queen Is Dead
Meat Is Murder
The World Won't Listen
Louder Than Bombs
Strangeways Here We Come
The Smiths

There are better bootlegs than the live Rank.

As far as The Cure are concerned:

Pornography
Three Imaginary Boys
Boys Don't Cry
Faith
Staring At The Sea

Morrisey solo:

Vauxhall And I
Your Arsenal
Viva Hate
Ringleader Of The Tormentors is a mostly good album too

Some bands unrelated to The Smiths but worth checking out if you like them:

The Primitives
Moose
The first two Suede albums
The La's (first album only)

sun city girl 04.16.2007 03:31 AM

what krastian said, i'll just fix the little typos here:

The Cure- Boys Don't Cry, Pornography, Disintegration
The Smiths- Hatful of Hollow, and The Queen is Dead

fishmonkey 04.16.2007 04:29 AM

anythin by the Smiths, dont mind the cure.

Torn Curtain 04.16.2007 09:14 AM

I agree with what's been proposed.

Hatful of hollow is underrated in my opinion (I may like it more than the studio albums), and Boys don't cry is a good compilation as it includes very good songs that aren't on Three imaginary boys.

Katy 04.16.2007 09:31 AM

My first experience of The Smiths was 'The Queen Is Dead'. I listened to it over and over and over on a 10-hour bus journey once when I was a teenager, coming back to London from Edinburgh. It was the only album I brought with me on the bus.. and it's only about half an hour long, so I just kept replaying it. It's one of those albums that I know inside out and backwards now. No regrets there.

My first experience of The Cure was dancing around to 'Love Cats' when I was little. It's actually one of my earliest musical memories. I can't remember a time when I didn't know that song. I still feel like a toddler whenever I hear it. The first Cure album I bought for myself was 'Disintegration'. No regrets there either.

Savage Clone 04.16.2007 09:53 AM

My favorite Cure albums are Seventeen Seconds, Faith and Pornography, all of which are now available in deluxe CD form with a ton of fantastic extra tracks, live cuts and demos from that period.

I also agree with Torn Curtain that Hatful Of Hollow is underrated for the Smiths. That is a fine album, and some of the versions on there are my favorites.

Everyneurotic 04.16.2007 10:53 AM

disintegration or bloodflowers and hatful of hollow, the only version i don't like from hoh is this charming man, other than that, it's a great album.

sarramkrop 04.16.2007 11:05 AM

I wouldn't really say that Hatful Of Hollow is an underrated Smiths album. It is widely recognized by many of their fans as their 'true' first album. And that is because it's much better.

Rob Instigator 04.16.2007 11:11 AM

Smiths
my faves are
The Queen Is Dead
Strangeways Here We Come
Louder Than Bombs

the Cure I like
The Head On The Door
Staring @ The Sea singles (get the CD or cassette which has all the B-sides as well. )
Disintegration

Cardinal Rob 04.16.2007 11:38 AM

Get everything by The Smiths. The Cure score 6/10 on the band chart. 'Boys Don't Cry' and 'In Between Days' are cute numbers. Check out the gerogerigegege's cover of 'Boys Don't Cry', it's spot on.

Yes, that. I have to add, The Cure-Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me

Rob Instigator 04.16.2007 12:18 PM

yes, add KISS ME KISS ME KISS ME!!!!!

Savage Clone 04.16.2007 12:28 PM

What?
Kiss me...has exactly one good song on it; The Snakepit.
That album was the beginning of the end for me with them.
After that it was just a song or two here and there.

Come on, the album is great....

Rob Instigator 04.16.2007 12:44 PM

kiss me... is a fuckingamazing guitar album through and through

auto-aim 04.16.2007 01:59 PM

I cant comment much on the smiths as i only have the queen is dead... As for the cure like if you counted up the votes it pornography and disintergration all of the way... however I would say that Kiss me is a better starter album - but to be honest the cure are pretty straight forward. Say clear from head on the door though.

SynthethicalY 04.16.2007 02:00 PM

Thank you guys for your suggestions.

Rob Instigator 04.16.2007 02:01 PM

head on the door is AWESOME!@

I was going to say the exact same thing, but the other way around.

sarramkrop 04.16.2007 02:04 PM

Morrisey and Rober Smith's dislike of each other's music will win.

what, that's one of their best records, also one of the easiest to get into, with hits like in between days, close to me etc.

PAULYBEE2656 04.17.2007 10:04 AM

ok, the cure- pornography and faith, seventeen seconds and distinegration are there best works in tha order....

the smiths- smiths, hatful of hollow, queen is dead, meat is murder and strangeways in that order, avoid solo morrisey like a dose of the clap.....

demonrail666 04.17.2007 10:10 AM

Smiths - The Queen is Dead

Cure (if you must) - Pornography

sarramkrop 04.19.2007 04:42 AM

"Army Of Me" - Bjork
In her "Post" book, she writes: " 'Army Of Me' is about Morrissey, or anyone who feels they can't cope". The song originally included a line mentioning Morrissey, something like "stop acting like Morrissey". It could be a coincidence echoing a line in the Smiths' "Ask", but in the video for the song, a timebomb with the word "Smith" on it bring her and her friend/lover together.

"England's Dreaming" - Cornershop
A song includes the line: "I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour, fight the power!". From the 10" EP "Lock, Stock, and Double Barelled". Also on the "Hold On It Hurts" album. Both from 1992 on Merge Records. At the time, Cornershop used the alleged racism rumours to protest against Morrissey and make the music papers mention them.

"Fairies Panic" - Black Smiths
The Black Smiths cover Smiths songs mashed with Black Sabbath songs (see more in this list). They are sold on cd at their gigs and downloadable from their website. This one features bits from the Smiths' "Panic".

"For Steven Patrick" - Durutti Column (Vini Reilly)
On his 1990 "Sporadic Recordings" album and the augmented 2002 reissue "The Return Of The Sporadic Recordings". Vini Reilly collaborated with Morrissey on Viva Hate and his first solo singles.

"Heaven Knows One's Miserable Now" - Spitting Image
Parody of Princess Di singing her own lyrics to the Smiths' "Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now".

"Maf" - Momus
From the 1999 album "Stars Forever". Includes the line "I made my confession to Didsbury police / I'd hoped to kill Morrissey, but neither of us could get arrested". The song is about a Morrissey fan named Maf, "the alter ego of a Leeds Morrissey fan called Matthew".

"Morrisey" - Anal Cunt
Their producer's name is Tina Morrisey but it seems the song is still about the singer. It is the same for their song "Johnny Violent Getting His Ass Kicked By Morrisey" on their "40 More Reasons To Hate Us" on Earache Records.

"Picture Of Dorian Grey" - The Television Personalities
From their 1984 live album "Chocolat-Art". With the lines: "We sit by a river, drinking lemon tea, eating tiny cucumber sandwiches made by Morrissey". The Television Personalities would often tell jokes about The Smiths in concert, or change lyrics to mention the Smiths or Morrissey. For example, they did change the song "I Know Where Syd Barrett Lives" to "I Know Where Steven Morrissey Lives". They also did very short songs live, made from lyrics from early Smiths singles.

"Stephen, It Was Really Something" - Associates
This is a riposte to the Smiths' "William It Was Really Nothing" which was allegedly about Associates singer Billy Mackenzie. The song remained unreleased for many years until the 2000 rarities compilation album "Double Hipness" on V2 Records.
