NIN. Love or hate them?
I've always knocked this band(man) since I can remember. I did this because I always dismissed him as a "gothy Marilyn Manson like black clad wanker".
But then..... last week... in a fit of late-night downloading.... I downloaded "Pretty Hate Machine" and I went crazy for it. It's so much more than I put it off being. Just great all around. Discuss. |
Really good band/dude. The Downward Spiral is oviously his best, though. Fucking amazing album.
|
Downard Spiral is a bomb ass record. Everything else can go to hell.
|
broken is better
the fragile is way better that said, i don't love them or hate them, i'm in the middle with them; there was a huge ass thread about them not long ago. |

I got that today, I'm getting ready to listen to it. |
It will teach you how to hate.
|
Yeah, I'm pretty indifferent about NIN. Reznor's got some good tunes but a lot of what I heard suffers from wanting to be The Downward Spiral.
|
I loathe them, but will admit that some of the first two albums and first ep are okay. If forced to pick a favorite, I'll go with Pretty Hate Machine.
I think I've made a post to this effect on the board ten times over the years. |
i'd never buy one of their/his albums, but i don't hate the band with a captial "H".
|
a big NO-NO!
i dont even try. ![]() |
This music has never appealed to me.

We have to find some point of disagreement musically at some point, or I'm going to worry just whose clone you really are! Actually, you are much gentler than I would be on this topic. I've always found his whole schtick to be among the most annoying in pop-culture. He makes Morrisey seem well adjusted on the self-pity scale, and at least Morrisey doesn't act like he should be scary in his self-loathing patheticness. I'll bite that there are parts of his music which would work if it weren't for the personality, but the problem is - it's always there. What's more, even at his best he has a way of genericizing his sound to the point that it can be applied like a formula by anyone. Which is truly the worst part, because on top of all the awful sound-alikes, he's gone and "produced" both Bowie and Numan into sounding like second rate NIN wanna-bes. |
Used to love them.....it's more nostalgia now than anything for me. I still like them a lot though.
Broken rules all. |
Where's fishmonkey, he would have kicked your ass. They are an awesome band man.
|
love reznors work. my favs gotta be broken/fixed. spiral (both album and the e.p.s and the fragile.. pretty hate machine is balls, very poor album.
|
Trent rulz!
|
broken ep is fucking GREAT.
the fragile, if a bit long, has some amazing shit on it. actually, everything except with teeth is pretty damn good! |
i mean, they're no hang on the box or anything...
|
NIN have always been a real "So what?" group to me. It does irritate me slightly that people think he's 'industrial', when in fact all he does is a form of techno-rock. He's got far more in common with Gary Numan than Throbbing Gristle.
|
please justify saying that nine inch nails has more in common with gary numan than throbbing gristle using the following tools:logic
|
Logic....
NIN use a rock template whilst incorporating a fair amount of electronics. Ditto Mr G Numan. TG never used any goddamn rock template, according to my ears. That can of course be seen as a positive or negative aspect of their music. |
I've never paid much attention to them. And I like it that way.
|
i think it's more a question of degree than that one was and one wasn't 'Rock'.
If TG were The Fall of Industrial Music, then NIN are its Status Quo. |
I think TG could perhaps be compared to "rock" once they started using rhythm as the backbone of their sound. They were certainly far more "punk" than the vast majority of so-called Punk bands, who really weren't that far removed from pub rock, at the end of the day.
|
pah, industrial music. what a horrible genre name. lazy made up name. just because genesis p orridgs label was called industrial records they decided to lump any band that didnt kinda fit in with the straight metal rock thing into industrial. bands like ggfh, kong, die krupps, front 242, even neubauten got lumped in there. its a horrible term, i mean neubauten suit the term moreso because of their use of heavy tools as instruments....
anyway nin are an excellent band, gary numan is misunderstood and thribbing gristle were, well, unique..... |
Which is the most twisted album?
|
this is so stupid...
|
Greatest band (if you call trent a band!) in the world.. alongside SY

How about the fact that Numan let Reznor "produce" him, resulting in the worst Numan records ever recorded. Genesis wouldn't do that, he can make bad records on his own, thank you. |

Well i suppose mean the darkest album, the one thats the most messed-up sounding. I heard the recent stuff and it didnt do alot for me yet ive heard alot about the old stuff. |
