Pavement: Westing (by Musket and Sextant)

I found this album secondhand today in my local. Was $14 Aus. I have it on hold.

I can't find much information on this album. Someone familiar (unlike me) with this album, help a brother out, please. Divulge me with information.

the ikara cult 05.10.2007 03:30 AM

Its all their EPs from before and around Slanted and Enchanted. As such its kinda ragtag as well as being - to quote someone who Thurston asked about them when they first came out - "somewhat unlistenable".
I dont really listen to it loads but it has some great stuff like Home, Box Elder, She believes, Debris Slide, Forklift. Its the one where the "Its The Fall" thing comes across most.
So if youre already a fan its great, not for beginners though.

fishmonkey 05.10.2007 03:57 AM

its a Pavement CD, so therefore its fuckin brilliant.

snap it up ASAP!

ZEROpumpkins 05.10.2007 04:17 AM

I don't like it much. Too noisy (like the guitar is an inaudible fuzz), but there are some gems, like Box Elder, Home, Debris slide etc. Home live on Slanted deluxe is waaay better imo.

sun city girl 05.10.2007 05:29 AM

i love it, absolutely essential record!!!!!!

more noisy and lo-fi than their later records but if you like slanted & enchanted i'm sure you'll like it too. some total gems there, like box elder, you're killing me, forklift etc.

ZEROpumpkins 05.10.2007 05:55 AM

Hmm... Maybe it'll grow on me.

atsonicpark 05.10.2007 06:01 AM

probably 2nd best. wowee zowee, of course, being the crowning achievement.

PAULYBEE2656 05.10.2007 09:10 AM

westing is amazing. westing deserves a place in everyones heart for 3 reasons...
1- box elder
2- debris slide and
3- everything else....

excellent album

Danny Himself 05.10.2007 10:03 AM

Baptist Blacktick!

Rob Instigator 05.10.2007 11:50 AM

MY FAVORITE! hell yeah! spizzle truck!

YR KILLING ME! YR KILLING ME AGAIN!

funny that someone complains about guitars sounding too fuzzy on a sonic youth forum! sonic youth's guitars sound like explosions at a piano factory sometimes! I love!@

westing by musket and sextant collects the early singles

DEMOLITION PLOT, SLAY TRACKS, (all very expensive to find) and more more.

westing is fucking awesome. not a bad freakout on it. that on and slanted are my two most ultimate favorite pavement

westing was recorded by just spiral stairs and S.M. mostly, with some drum work by Gary Young.

westing is the rulinest shit around.

Norma J 05.10.2007 04:35 PM

Alright, alright. I'll pick it up today.

TheDom 05.10.2007 05:51 PM

Worth it alone for Angel Carver Blues/Mellow Jazz Docent

HECKLER SPRAY 05.10.2007 06:34 PM

It's a masterpiece. A fucking good sound, rough, Lofi, great songs, no bullshit... The early Pavement songs were the best, in my opinion. I love it. Perfect Sound Forever...

Yes, some love for WZ, which is also my favourite Pavement album.

atsonicpark 07.13.2008 08:35 AM

been listening to this again a lot lately. there's just something about it. i still think wowee is thier crowning achievement... though slanted deserves mention for being one of the only records to ever blow my mind when i first heard it 6 years ago... actually, i pretty much enjoy everything pavement's ever done. KINGS OF GOOD MELODY! PERFECT SOUND FOREVER!

this album rules.

gary young's drumming is really really really awesome -- in an awful way, but somehow.. I dunno... I don't think any other kind of drumming would work for this stuff really. There's this random drum roll thing in "Forklift" that always makes me laugh.

I like this album because it really sounds like they didn't know what the hell they were doing or how to play their instruments properly at all but they had some good song ideas and melodies and just went for it. And it worked...

greedrex 07.13.2008 09:21 AM

controversial
some say it rules, others say it's way overrated.
It's personaly the Pavement record i enjoy the least (mmm terror twilight wasn't that good either was it? but i still like it more.
The sound puts me off, like somebody said it's a bit too lofi for me (just as the first Silver Jews Lp).
Now the songs are great and you gotta have it, because Pavement (used to) rule.

marleypumpkin 07.13.2008 09:43 AM

I bought the vinyl of it recently, & to be honest, it was okay. There are places on that record that are just not what you'd expect when listening to Pavement. I lean towards Wowee Zowee being my favorite Pavement record.

HECKLER SPRAY 07.13.2008 12:33 PM

Intenal K-dart !!!!

I love this "album" !!!!

atsonicpark 07.13.2008 03:36 PM

1. wowee
2. westing
3. slanted
4. crooked
5. brighten
6. terror

that;s what i think.

funny that, that sound is ezactly what i expect from pavement......

my favourite pave albums in order for the record are

slanted
westing
crcr
wowee
corners
terror

and also put their peel sessions (both of them) together and its probably top of the list and yeah, they are also the order of release so that speaks volumes for me anyway...

i love pavement but i love their period when they didnt really know how to construct a song. i thought they got better songwriters but much more tedious with their latter albums.... by the way, its a close call between everything they did up to brighten the corners....

ricechex 07.13.2008 04:36 PM

Chex's record:

1. Slanted
2. Westing
3. Crooked Rain
4. Brighten the Corners
5. Wowee
6. Terror Twilight

haha its nearly in order, time wise..

but yeah, Westing is an essential..

atsonicpark 07.13.2008 04:59 PM

"You were out on the couch
Pressed into ellipsal electric truth"

Or whatever.

atsonicpark 07.13.2008 05:04 PM

"price Yeah!"

I'm probably not the best judge of pavement's work though... "Jackals, False Grails: The Lonesome Era" is my favorite song afterall.

perfect chord sequences.. undiluted slang truth-ah.

sarramkrop 07.13.2008 05:20 PM

This is the only Pavement album that I can sit down and listen to. It's a compilation, I know, but after buying ''Slanted and Enchanted'' this vindicated all my expectations.

atsonicpark 07.13.2008 05:24 PM

I'm just waiting, waiting for the Baptist
That sad suck-off left me in Damascus
I'm just waiting, waiting for the Baptist
That sad sucker, that son left me now I'm just wasting, wasting all the black ticks
Queens, queers, rockers -- enough to make your ears twitch
I'm wasting, wasting all the black ticks
Some reddish sins, some grey, is it now?
I'm just waiting, waiting for Blacktick
That fucker
That fucker left me now
That sucker left me now
That son left me now
That son left me now

dressedindreams 07.14.2008 03:51 AM

maybe she is, maybe she's not
maybe eyes, eyes in the socket
eyes in the socket
so i'm gonna suck it
ba ba bada ba

DEBRIS SLIDE!

noisereductions 07.14.2008 08:47 AM

It's the only Pavement album I never listen to, really. I like "Box Elder" and there's a version of "Summer Babe," but the bulk of it IS pretty unlistenable.

atsonicpark 07.14.2008 08:53 AM

i don't hear anything even remotely unlistenable about it. the production isn't very good, sure, but it's only slightly noisier than slanted.

and it's 10000x more interesting than terror twilight...

Rob Instigator 07.14.2008 09:18 AM

yes, terror twilight suck shit.

westing is fucking awesome.
I love the noises. the heavenly noises.

(this provocative post was brought to you by Greedrex)

Rob Instigator 07.14.2008 10:54 AM

fuck that country music bullshit. I hate wilco and I hate terror twilight and I HATE the Jicks

fucking suck ass suck malkmus has created!

greedrex 07.14.2008 11:13 AM

hello Rob
terror twilight has good songs and is only remotely and sarcastically related to country music. It's not even half as bad as what Frank Black did in his early 2000 LPs. That was really bad, although i'm huge fan of Pixies and early Frank Black solo LPs (the 5 first LPs were rockin' in their right)

Now the Jicks and solo Malkmus LPs do suck, yes, but that's a different band we're talking about.

Rob Instigator 07.14.2008 11:43 AM

true, very true.

frank black's solo shit was doo doo to the extreme

noisereductions 07.14.2008 11:47 AM

Look SLANTED is one of my favorite albums of all time, but I still think a majority of the songs on WESTING suck and that a majority of the songs on TERROR TWILIGHT are quite good. I'm way over the old "if it's polished then it's not cool" thing.

Rob Instigator 07.14.2008 12:26 PM

I like the germs of ideas, of musical ideas, and westing is chock full of them, like Wire's PINK FLAG
terror twilight sounds like a few overproduced ideas over and over again, which is boring to my ear.

true, Westing has so many ideas that are mixed in, within even one little musical piece...it's challenging, not unlike Beefheart in a way. it somehow stays together enough and is awesome.

i do like Terror too. it just was a recording where it seemed like Malkmus was a tad uninspired at Pavement's end there. it was a very safe, nicey, warm sounding, record. But still solid.

HECKLER SPRAY 07.14.2008 04:17 PM

I agree with Rob.

Well, Terror Twilight was not completly bad, I like few songs (Speak, see, remember, The Hexx...), but it sounds very mediocre compared to the others.
It sounds like a preface to Malkmus' solo albums.

true

noisereductions 07.14.2008 07:35 PM

I think the first Malk solo album is really good. I'd probably say better than TERROR TWILIGHT. His 2nd and 3rd solo albums I never got into. Found them pretty boring. The new one has some good stuff, though. "Cold Son" for instance, and a few others have some interesting stuff going on.
