Restaurants

Recommend some good restaurants from where you live. This is Cafe Bangla in London's Brick Lane. Good indian food and the decor can best be described as Bollywood Salvador Dali, complete with a surreal painting of princess Diana that you might be able to spot on one of these pictures:

I guess this means that I'm going to have to clean the bathroom.

normally I'd offer you a place to stay, but I already have another friend coming into town.

down worry about the restaurant though, I'll drive.

do you like lamb fries?

pokkeherrie 05.10.2007 09:12 AM

If you're coming here, these guys make a decent falafel

When you're sitting on the ground it feels just like being in a restaurant. I'll bring an umbrella in case it rains.

It's difficult to find a place in London where you can buy decent falafels. I only know this takeaway place in Soho and De Cecco in Earl's Court.

Cardiff:

Hahza - Ace Kurdish restaurant and quite cheap.

Topoli - Persian restaurant. Super nice owner who treats you well (free tequila!)

Jikoni - Cheap as hell vegetarian Indian restaurant.

sonicl 05.10.2007 09:24 AM

I celebrated my birthday at The Dining Room in Hersham.

Another favourite is Brula in Twickenham.

And in central London I like Melati, in Windmill Street.

Oh, and I like eating at any branch of Blubeckers.

whorefrost 05.10.2007 09:35 AM

La Favorita in Leith has excellent log-fired pizzas

demonrail666 05.10.2007 10:34 AM

Nico's in Bethnal Green, London.

Not quite a restaurant but so much more than a cafe. Greek-run traditional greasy spoon with truly enormous portions (the main courses usually come on two large dinner plates!) Not somewhere to take that special someone, but if you want ot fill up with simple but excellent home-cooking whilst listening to behind the counter arguments about this season's merits/failings of the Arsenal, then this really is the place. Food-wise I may as well live there.

The mixed grill, at about £7, is quite simply epic in scale and usually served with a cautionary 'don't worry, take your time' from the old lady who heaves it to your table.

Thinking about it, I might just have a wander down there in a bit.

atari 2600 05.10.2007 10:51 AM

I think he made the topic just so he could wittily remark on the decor of that restaurant haha...bollywood salvador dali.
I have a friend in commercial real estate that also owns a bar & grill downtown. He wants another friend to manage a new full-size place (more family-style full restaurant & bar) that he's opening next year, and I was thinking it might be fun to work there too sometimes (done it before), but I don't know.

we have a few good places in c-ville, but athens has better restaurants.

Bethnall Green Road is home to quite a few eateries. The two I wouldn't mind going to are E.Pelluci's and the Turkish pida place near Brick Lane (can't remember it's name offhand).

The best restaurant I've bene to in London is Nobu. Ridiculously expensive, but their sushi is the best I've ever tasted. They also serve sake in iced bamboo containers.

jon boy 05.10.2007 11:29 AM

there is a good place on helmholmplatz in berlin that does very good vegie stuff. they have these hooks hanging from the ceiling and they bring out lots of stuff and hang it on one over your table and you just take what you like. its ounds strange but makes perfect sense if your there.

LifeDistortion 05.10.2007 11:32 AM

E. Pelluci's is OK but so small that you rarely get a table. The food is slightly better than Nico's but needless to say the portions can't compare.

I know the Turkish place you mean (Tas Firin) and while it's OK, the food is quite expensive and isn't THAT much better than what you'd get at a decent kebab shop.

tesla69 05.10.2007 01:34 PM

Lord's Lobster Pound in Wells, Maine. If they're closed (out of season) The Maine Diner up the road is really good too.

LittlePuppetBoy 05.10.2007 02:02 PM

Casa Grecque (greek food), Lapointe (seafood), Mekong (chinese), Agave (mexican)

there's nowhere round where i live that i would describe as a good restaurant, but pizzaman on lower clapton road has edible £1 pizzas.
i'm curious to try african and jamaican food because there are quite a few places round but they all look a bit shit.

Пятхъдесят Шест 05.10.2007 03:26 PM

Oh piss.

I just posted one in the tapas thread.

Another one:

The Indian Oven

Anyone been to Casa Bonita in Denver, Colorado?

True, I've only been there three times and the decor made me go back as much as the food. Happy?

It's not the one that opened not too recently opposite the building, is it? They make great kebas in there. I've walked it past on my way home tonight but went for Subway, in a moment of madness and to avoid the Maximo Park fans from the Astoria.

Iain 05.10.2007 07:39 PM

Tasties in Bristol is good if you want Jamaican food and an interesting dining experience. Especially at 3am. I don't know why but I imagine Glice has been there and probably caused "a scene".

pantophobia 05.10.2007 09:05 PM

around my parts, shit, i don't get out enough to know, at the Maryland-Delaware beachs i know tons more cause i always seems to eat out

for Subs and Pizza- Surf's Edge, Ocean Side, and Ken's Bayside both in Fenwick Island DE, Surf's Up in Bethany Beach DE, Billy's Sub Shop and Tommy's Subs in Ocean City MD

for Mexican - Cactus Cafe in Fenwick Island , Tequilla Mockingbird in Ocean City

for Crabs - Mickey's Crab House in Bethany Beach, Crabcake Factory and Phillips in Ocean City, or just drop a crab pot in the bay and catch your own, although it's slim pickens nowadays

for BBQ - all the best are inland, the best overall is Em-ings in Bishopville

for Dinner (some with a view) - Mango Mike's in Bethany Beach, Purple Parrot and Dogfish Head (visited by Steve Shelley and Mike Watt some years back) in Rehoboth, Macky's Bayside and Secrets in Ocean City

for Ice Cream - Kohr Bros Frozen Custard in Rehoboth, King Kone and Dumsers Dairyland (their food is quite good too) in Ocean City

some places that were good or are gone were the Bay Cafe in Fenwick that was bulldozed to make room for condos, and Nick's Original House of Ribs which is still around but is a sad story, I knew Nick and his daughter and used to hang out in the upstairs and eat with him back about over 12-13 years ago, but he got into to deep debt with the mafia, and he was found murdered and i haven't been back to the building since

anyways this info is useful to only about 4 people at most

are you at the beach, you lucky goat?

damn damn damn. i am extremely but supebly jealous-- not in a toxic way mind you, i am happy for you-- but damn... i miss that.

ever go to assateague island? the state park side is my favorite. sure there are huge horse flies, but it's QUIET and there are no serious crowds, and there's no development or crap like that.

give it a try. you'll have to pack your own food though. and get a nice mosquito repellent like this one which is totally natural & the insects hate (prolly you can find it @ the takoma park co-op)

aghh..

have fun!!

not at the moment, but i am looking there if i can't get a job here,

i haven't been to assateague in years, my dad used to take his boat and park it right on the beach, and we'd hang out and sometimes see the wild horses in the distance, fenwick is my favorite beachfront, can walk to some sub shops and my cousin has a place up there so i can park close

CHOUT 05.10.2007 11:41 PM
