This part about Psychic Hearts doesn't make any sense: "I was writing a lot of those songs burning through the days of Lollapalooza ‘94. A lot of it was what was in the air at that time. It was just a few years after Kurt had died and Courtney was sort of in this space that we were in. And so I was hanging out with Courtney a lot [...]" ![]() |

I'd say he's having a bit of a senior moment |
The Japan tour he's referring to, he was actually playing solo versions of songs from Jet Set (and he may also be thinking of Lollapalooza '93, where he did the same thing). Can't explain the rest...
Also Trees Outside The Academy was not recorded in the early 2000s! (I think he's confusing it with the Murray Street stuff, which started as a solo project) |
'' And, I always liked that when I would get a Blue Oyster Cult record in the early ‘70s, and I would see these bylines by Helen Wheels or Richard Meltzer or Patti Smith as a lyricist…they would write this music and they would get other writers, friends, and lovers to compose lyrics for them. And something about that I always found really fascinating and appealing. And I like having that collaboration in my solo records, particularly the ones I’ve been making since being in a relationship with Eva.”
That's such a strange thing to say. |
^I guess that would explain why he laments his own lyrics and reveals why he weirdly feels the need to explain the meaning of the lyrics in his songs.

Thurston is lost a bit

I'd lament his lyrics if I wrote them too. |

well he's nearly 70 years old. Some people are already out of it much sooner than that. |

Radical is Thurston's favourite word. He can't help checking out a black woman writing an interesting book and think to himself 'So radical, this black woman is radical'. He's now all over Kamala Harris because potentially she will be the first black woman voted as a president. Nevermind reading on the label that her politics may be just as bad as Donald Trump or Jo Biden's, but because she is a woman and black, they will be 'radical', therefore an improvement. |

I would say this is more "Sonic 2024" than "Thurston News". But hey, it's all to the good. :) |
oops, wrong thread
|
btw, did you guys read Thurston's "Sonic Life" book? I am in it now and it's indeed entertaining. I like how he's focus on the bands he loved when he was young, and giving deep impressions about gigs he attended, people he met, etc.

Radical mag Forbes article in which T-dog endorses jazz and the Grateful Dead (agreed)

Very cool, thank you. I'm not a Grateful Dead fan (I apologize, Lee ;)), but this is the most eloquent and focused Thurston I've read in some time. (Now, that B.E. thing... Oy. That's for the flame war over pop music at the "Best of 2024" thread, I guess.) |
