Modern Noise Bands
I love a bit of noise music. But almost everything I own is all the older stuff like SY, The Swans, Glenn Branca and various other things like that. Apart from Wolf Eyes, I am not particularly aware of that many newer bands around at the moment making good noise music... Any suggestions???
|
I wouldn't call SY, The Swans or Glenn Branca 'noise music' If you are looking for things of that ilk then most so called 'noise music' of today would probably dissapoint. If you like Wolf Eyes then maybe give Hair Police ago perhaps but most 'noise music' tends to abandon structure to a large degree in favour of exploring textures of sound and that. Or it's just an obnoxious din...
It sounds like you're more interested in noisy things that have their feet planted firmly in a rock stance so listing things like Merzbow, Prurient, Hive Mind etc would probably be pointless. |
Mouthus!

obvious but:
hair police scissor shock yellow swans might be up your alley.. |
Lightning Bolt
|
Dream/aktion unit
Julie Mittens |
It think you'd like yellow swans, i reckon it has the swans, branca vibe more than prurient or hair police.
Starving Weirdos also rule, more drone than noise though. Kevin Drumm- Sheer Hellish Masma The last two Whitehouse albums. I listen to a fair bit of local stuff actually like Castings, Moonmilk, Heil Spirits, Prehistoric Fucking Moron. I've been looking at getting stuff by Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, Sports, Sword Heaven and Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck but postage to Australia is a bitch. |
Apart from Merzbow & Whitehouse (who are pretty much everything you need to know about noise) I'd heartily recommend Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music, Pauline Oliveros' earlier stuff and any Musique Concrete (Pierre Schaffer, Bernard Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari or Francisco Lopez). Otherwise, there's a million blogs which'll tell you about the other bits of noise that're important.
It's a terrifically patchy genre, might I recommend that you don't bother and get into country instead? EDIT: I'm aware that none of this is modern, but to be fair, modern noise music is about as satisfying as dry humping trees, and no where near as perverted. |
so you want like noise rock or noise noise?
|
Well I guess I mean noise rock, I often find that complete noise can be a little boring if not done very well...
|
Not a pure noise album, but Xinlisupreme's Tomorrow Never Comes album is a must-have too.
|
For a good fuzzy noise rock, check out Hash Jar Tempo's "Under Glass"
|
Noise rock -> Liars, Gang Gang Dance, Double Leopards, Psychic Ills, Telepathe, Xiu Xiu...
|
I really liked the last Skullflower album. Noise, yes, but also rather pretty.

Fuck...totally obvious call that I should have thought of. I haven't heard the newest Skullflower yet but a bunch of their other records are pretty much essential. Check out Exquisite Fucking Boredom, IIIrd Gatekeeper or Last Shot at Heaven. Those three are pretty ace. |
I remember this coming up before and how a few of us (myself mostly) got the shit kicked out of us for mentioning Liars and Lightning Bolt. And I now agree. While they're noisy, I don't think of them as noise rock, like Wolf Eyes et al.

cue theme musik for "Dallas" and have a 6-pack no img search just ramble on |
Merzbow is really, really good. That guy blows my mind more than any other musician in history. Sure, I like other artists much more, but his sheer bizarre genius is mind-bottling. He's made more weird sounds than the Velvets, SY, Wolf Eyes, The Swans, Glenn Branca, etc. combined.
After 5 minutes of listening to his "music" I have to turn it off because it's all too much!!! |
sorry, some self-promotion here, but im very proud of this release on my label:
if you want to hear cutting edge noise-rock, then i highly recommend this tripple LP. it is called Pisspounder and features LP sides by Sword Heaven, Aa, Foot Village, Grey Skull, Rainbow Blanket, & Dreamhouse. http://deathbombarc.com/releases/dba044.htm |
Oh fuck...The Goslings. Get Grandeur of Hair...so damn good.

what are that group dreamhouse like, do they have a website or myspace or anything because i've been meaning to check them out? |

they've always had basicly zero web pressence. but here is a video of them in belgium that i archived from the old ecstatic peace site: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kBiXlSXa6nI besides the pisspounder thing, i have copies of their 12" in my distro if you are interested. |
well, most people here are talking about noise noise, noise rock i think are more like jesus lizard, unsane, cows, sun city girls, smegma, caroliner, arab on radar, harry pussy, rose for boudan etc. you know, rock bands who play with noisy elements, they still retain some sort of structures instead of being linear, etc.

Well, it really sounds like the original post was open to either or both. Most of us are too, but it's kind of funny how desperately people need to push stuff into one camp or the other (not dissing you EvN, you aren't particularly at fault). Certainly stuff like Confusion is Sex or early Melvins fits neatly into noise rock, but plenty of rock artists have done full on noise records from Reed's Metal Machine Music to the Silver Sessions. Then there are people like Man is the Bastard/Bastard Noise who walk both sides under a couple names (excellent shit too.) Of course Bastard Noise's greatest moment (to me) is RRRevenge which they're label dumped for not being "a noise enough" record. It never ceases to amaze me how with ever movement in art towards the freedom to break out of conventional structures, there are those who embrace the new language(s) as a means to create brand new cages. |
well, the guy responded to my post of "you want noise rock or noise noise?" by saying that noise rock since he likes swans and stuff like that, so i thought it would be stupid to recommend him sutcliffe jügend and incapacitants to him is he's looking for something with structure and rock instrumentation.
the only difference i make between the two (if you like) is on the song structures/arrangements, when it comes to noise, other than harshness. you can take amm and nihilist spasm band and the like and debate whether they are rock bands playing noise or noise bands with rock instrumentation (or avant garde ensembles or post free jazz combos, etc). my point was with this thread specifically. |
anyway.
curse of the birthmark. |
oh and yeah, props to the people who love the goslings. my other band robe. is actually doing a split with em. good people.

holy shit adam!! congratulations! |
Hototogishu. All the noise you'll evere need. Complete formless, wandering noise. Fatastic.
|
it was actually really easy.
we just emailed em, said we were fans, traded some stuff, and are doing a split. we finished our side, they just need to finish theirs. yep yep. really easy to work with and good people. |
