anyone ever write a book?

Like, a real book. Not some neo-Beat typing excersize. A book over 40,000 words at least, with multiple drafts.

I think I'm fuckin' losing it. It is by far the hardest thing I've done, and it isn't even very good. I think if we adopt "novel writing" as a form of punishment, the crime rate would plummet. "I'd sell crack, but if I got caught, I'd have to write a novel."

Has anyone else gone through this painful process?

atsonicpark 05.23.2007 09:24 AM

no but i'd like to.

LifeDistortion 05.23.2007 09:27 AM

I wrote a draft for a novel, or is it novella? I'm not quite sure, have yet to write the second draft though.

mangajunky 05.23.2007 09:58 AM

I never wrote a book but since I'm an editor I've been responsible for putting together and printing about 150 books so far.

whorefrost 05.23.2007 10:01 AM

hey junky, who do you work for? I'm studying publishing myself at the moment, wouldn't mind going down the editing route.. ideally I'd like to write a novel myself but I chose publishing as a practical fallback..

mangajunky 05.23.2007 10:12 AM

It's all manga. I take the original book have it translated and changed over for sale in North America. I've only done 6 original books from scratch where I organized the writer and artist and gave feedback to get the books created.

Some kinky stuff in that list :) ;)

mangajunky 05.23.2007 11:13 AM

I tell girls that I work in pornography.

pbradley 05.23.2007 11:55 AM

I'm too scatterbrained to write a book. My friend, however, writes scripts and short stories and I've been trying to get him interested in getting involved with bizarro fiction since that's alrady his style.

Iain 05.23.2007 12:06 PM

Have you read any of that Bizarro fiction stuff? I've read a bit about it but haven't picked up a book yet. It interests me but at the same time I'm concerned that it may be a bit self conciously weird...you know, weird for weirds sake. Actually, I did try and read a bit of Kenji Siratori but I didn't get far.

pbradley 05.23.2007 12:25 PM

Well of course it's weird for weird sake (you wouldn't call it bizarro if it weren't) but the virtue is in the fact that it recognizes its own nature. You know, not acting like some tortured genius but more like a comic book love for the thrill.

I couldn't save the more hardcore stuff.

racehorse 05.23.2007 01:04 PM

well my mum just finished a book and is starting on her second.
she has got herself an agent and is in the process of sending the manuscript to publishers.
it took her a long time to write though, around 3 years, doing a little bit each night.

Glice 05.23.2007 01:47 PM

2 books, three including one I wrote when I was 11-13. Both unmitigated shite, but I hold out hope for the third (completing it sometime in the next year or so).

Silent Dan Speaks 05.23.2007 02:10 PM

I intend to at some point, but I don't feel I'm old and wise enough at the moment.

Bertrand 05.24.2007 02:53 AM

I've been trying to.
Short stories. It takes so much time doing something you'd like to read.

I wrote twice for theatre.
Been played less than 20 times. Biggest audience 600. A great reward.
I've been stuck with another play for nearly two years now. It's completed but there's a twist that doesn't really work.

Two persons I know have written & been published.

It's a bit like in Capote, when you hear someone you've known has just finished, you can't help feeling hurt.

Yeah, most of it perhaps but the Kenji Siratori stuff seemed pretty pretentious for want of a better word. I take it he is 'unique' in the field in that he seems to dole out acres of sub Burroughs cut up/nonsense type stuff and most of the bizzaro stuff it at least narrative based rather than stream of (tedious) conciousness stuff. Don't get me wrong, stram of conciousness type stuff or cut up type stuff can be nice but the Siratori stuff I read was just really awkward and bad.

Toilet & Bowels 05.24.2007 08:06 AM

no, but i intend to try my hand at comics sooner or later, maybe by myself or maybe in collaboration with my brother or one of my friends.

Iain 05.24.2007 08:21 AM

That sounds like a good idea. What will your comics be about? Superheros or mundane stuff? Or somewhere in between?

the ikara cult 05.24.2007 08:31 AM

what is beat writing?
seriously i dont know

I guess I meant Jack Keuroak mostly. He didn't edit, just typed. It's pretty easy to remember some cool incident and just type away and say "Done." It's a bit harder to make up everything and get every word just right. How he managed to actually be readible is a literary miracle.

Hasn't everyone at some point read a book (good or bad) and said "I could do that?" I'm sure everyone would like to write a book. No, that's not right. Everyone would like to HAVE written a book. Actually writing... only someone who's never done it before would say "I want to write."

I'd rather masterbate with coarse sandpaper than write, but I'm in too deep to quit.

Oh i do that all the time. I never consider it as something anyone else would want to read though, probably rightfully so. But if i could attach a famous name to it i imagine it would become some kind of gospel.

auto-aim 05.24.2007 09:29 AM

I'm another intending to author... It is a really tough thing to write and im definatly not a very good writer at all, but that wouldn't stop me. I'd need a couple of years of years alone... but i will do it eventually.

gmku 05.24.2007 10:07 AM

I wrote several novellas when I was 10 or 11 based on The Man from UNCLE tv series. I was doing fan fiction before that term was coined. They were full of car chases and gun fights and bombs, and Napoleon Solo saying witty things to pretty women. I wish I still had them!

Rob Instigator 05.24.2007 10:25 AM

I have promised to myself to write a book by the start of football season. I am a storyteller and I have a way with words and it will be vulgar as all hell and maybe I can make some money. yeah.

LifeDistortion 05.24.2007 11:55 AM

That's pretty awesome of you Kegmama.

i want to write a comic about the life of keiji haino, it will be a largely fictional account that plays up to his mysterious, spectral and shamanic persona. so you could say it will be a superhero comic.
the thing i want to do with my friend to describe it in cliched but succinct terms would be as a cross between roy of the rovers and south park, which is to say a football comic with lots of surreal, juvenile and borderline offensive humour.

if yr kids like it you should make several copies and give it to other mommies out there and then send it to some publishers. they LOVE children's books.

What, like Billy the Fish from Viz?

Toilet & Bowels 05.24.2007 03:27 PM

not really, besides, billy the fish is shit. there's only about a 5% chance of it ever getting made though because my friend is too scared to make stuff and put it out incase people think it's shit (seriously) even though his writing isn't shit.

So it's like real person fanfiction, but in comic form? If so, I totally support this.
