Bands you mostly listen to one instrument in...

Been thinking about starting a thread on this for a while but it's sort of difficult to explain what I'm getting at with it. All i'll say is that when I listen to SY I tend to find myself increasingly listening to the drums. Similarly, with Can it's the bass. Anyone else have bands they do this with?

demonrail666 06.09.2007 09:23 PM

Ew, that reminds me. I really want to get some liquid liquid stuff.

demonrail666 06.09.2007 09:27 PM

I only know Cavern, but reckon I'd like whatever they do if the rest is anything like that.

demonrail666 06.09.2007 09:32 PM

You've convinced me!

Bicorn Halfelven 06.09.2007 10:12 PM

Until about two years ago, I listened almost solely to guitars, regardless of bands... however, lately, I too have been really picking up on the genius of Steve Shelley. Sister is one of my favorite guitar and drum records, and the newer stuff has some amazing drumming as well.

youthoftomorrow 06.09.2007 10:31 PM

i mostly listen to the guitar when i listen to Black Sabbath. but that's not really much of a surprise.

terminal pharmacy 06.09.2007 11:51 PM

i usually listen to the drums first on every album i buy, then the guitars whatever in more depth after.

MellySingsDoom 06.10.2007 02:33 AM

On listening to Burzum Cds, my ears fix on to the love.

I pretty much be paying attention to every aspect of the song as I listen to it. I'll hum the bass on drum on my leg. And guitar I also always listen to.

SynthethicalY 06.10.2007 02:59 AM

I could never hear the bass.

ZEROpumpkins 06.10.2007 02:59 AM

Primus and the bass

SonicSam 06.10.2007 04:06 AM

Yeah any band that has a good bassist I end up listening to that.

atsonicpark 06.10.2007 06:26 AM

Ah, Les Savy Fav, I love this band, especially their " Cat and the Cobra" LP.
The singer ... Well... often screams, but he really is a showman.
The bassist is so good too, and the drummer gets along behind his drumset.
The guitarist is simply mad.

atsonicpark 06.10.2007 08:05 AM

YEAH i actually like all the instruments

but the guitarist always gets me.. damn.

HECKLER SPRAY 06.10.2007 08:13 AM

Have you seen the DVD part of "INCHES" ?

There's a live show, and Seth Jabour is fucking good on it, especially on "Who rocks the Party". He's insane. Mmmm...

atsonicpark 06.10.2007 08:25 AM

sweet, checking this out now.

i actually think inches is their best record maybe. so many good tracks. goddamn. though rome upside down and go forth are fucking killer too. damn. everything they've done.. i dunno how, but it's all good.

sarramkrop 06.10.2007 08:27 AM

ESG - The bass on their songs is generally awesome

On The Velvet Underground's Waiting For My Man, the bass seems like it's almost played backwards, so I always try to separate it from the other instruments.

Can't think of anything in particular, right now.

scott v 06.11.2007 12:44 PM

I listen to the drums on chris corsano albums...

andrei 06.11.2007 12:52 PM

Big Black / Rapeman / Shellac / Jesus Lizard - Guitars

lungfish 06.11.2007 12:58 PM

every band i listen to has great aspects on every instrument that's played.
and it varies between songs. in other words, i could change what i pay attention to many times within one song.
i don't pay strict attention to just one instrument, unless i'm really intrigued by what one musician may be playing on their respective instrument.
and also, how it may or may not coexist with the other instruments, etc.

but.. if i had to choose, i always listen to Greg Ginn on Black Flag records, mainly because i have no other choice haha. so many great guitar bits right in my face.

atsonicpark 06.12.2007 02:39 AM

hahah.

...on the other hand, if i could NOT listen to an instrument in a band, it would be greg ginn's guitar, especially his solos...

m^a(t)h 06.16.2007 10:10 PM

when i listen to joy division and new order im always focused on the drums, because they easily steal the show. The drums on the substance version of "ceremony" from joy division are amazing...

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 07:17 PM

Really, the drums for Joy division?

The fucking BASS.

Satan 09.30.2009 10:03 PM

ooh joy division talk.

the drums really get me, stephen morris is a genius drummer.
but so does the bass. and so does the guitar.
i also listen very intently to ian.

it's different for different songs. songs like colony or atrocity exhibition.... all drums.
24 hours...guitars. isolation synths. no love lost bass (and guitars on the into bit)

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 10:13 PM

COLONY is probably their best song to me (not my favorite though it's up there) because I think that's the one where all instruments come together so perfectly..

Satan 09.30.2009 10:15 PM

they were so fucking good.

colony is epic.

atsonicpark 09.30.2009 10:18 PM

0-10-12-0-10-12-0-10-12-0-10-12, etc.

knox 09.30.2009 10:19 PM

when i listen to unwound i often find myself paying attention to one instrument at a time, reason why i listen to it many times

pbradley 09.30.2009 10:21 PM

I don't really, unless there is only one instrument being played then of course I pay attention to that.

Death & the Maiden 10.01.2009 05:13 AM

Malice Mizer for the guitars, except in their early stuff when they had a good vocalist. Guitar songs were definitely what they were best at, I don't know why they did less than ten over their whole career.

atsonicpark 10.01.2009 05:53 AM

Malice Mizer for their horror movie synths.

Bertrand 10.01.2009 05:21 PM

Bertrand 10.02.2009 05:40 PM

Birthday Party for the guitar sound
I can't hear the bass (or interesting parts) in the records I know and never understood why Barry Adamson joined the Bad Seeds; he had so much more to do on Magazine albums that I'm still puzzled.
