Who's your favourite Young Ones character?

Rik, Vyvyan, Neil or Mike?

demonrail666 06.23.2007 07:19 AM

All in their own way. At the time though it was definitely Rik.

jimbrim 06.23.2007 07:22 AM

Yea, Rik make's me laugh the most.

demonrail666 06.23.2007 07:24 AM

If they re-did it now, you know that Rik would be a total messaboard type.

jon boy 06.23.2007 08:13 AM

rik.

raging_nelly 06.23.2007 10:22 AM

(p)Rik haha

I really love The Young Ones; it's definitely in my top five sitcoms of all time. We've just rewatched the two series and enjoyed them as much as ever. MY top three episodes would be Nasty, Cash and Flood.

I have to say that I like Mike. He's funnier than people realise, and he's a nice calm presence at the centre of everything, which stops things becoming too much. Christopher Ryan is excellent.

I love Alexei Sayle as the Belowski family, too.

The Young Ones features cameos by a lot of people who went on to success.

Some random facts about The Young Ones:

The excellent but largely irrelevent insert sequences were the work of Lise Meyer; Ben Elton apparantly didn't like them and tried to have them excluded.

The Young Ones had musical guests because that allowed them to class the show as 'variety' rather than 'comedy' and thus obtain a larger budget.

Madness are the only band to appear on the show twice. The second appearance was apparantly due to a scheme to make the band stars of their own Monkees-style TV show.

StevOK 06.23.2007 12:50 PM

My heart will always go for Vyvyan.

Cardinal Rob 06.23.2007 04:41 PM

Rik.

Pure brilliance.

Hip Priest 06.24.2007 10:48 AM

You're quite right. My favourite episode.

I love the visual gag at the start where the boys are carrying the coffin, and you eventually realise that Mike isn't actually holding it at all. Great episode all round though.

Are you a fan of 'The Comic Strip' as well?

Hip Priest 06.24.2007 10:56 AM

Yes indeed. We bought the complete dvd thing last year but got sidetracked about half way through. We keep meaning to go back and finish off, so thanks for the reminder. Peter Richardson is excellent in that series.

Trasher02 06.24.2007 11:30 AM

Rik of course!
I loved them in Bottom too.

Hip Priest 06.25.2007 05:56 PM

IN between The Young ONes and Bottom, there was a thing called Filthy, Rich and Catflap which was quite good. It starred three of them (Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer).

Pookie 06.25.2007 06:04 PM

I was a big fan of the Comic Strip and related stuff, but I never saw Filthy, Rich & Catflap.

!@#$%! 06.25.2007 06:06 PM

and what was the name of dr martens boots? he was supposed to be the nephew of the landlord or something.

Hip Priest 06.25.2007 06:08 PM

Alexei Yuri Gagarin Siege of Stalingrad Glorious Five-Year Plan Sputnik Tractor Moscow Dynamo Back Four Belowski.

I was obsessed with The Young ONes for much of my teenage life.

The song was an Alexei Sayle stage thing, and appeared on an LP called (I think) 'Cak'. I don't have that but I do have the 12" of 'Ullo John! Gotta New Motor', the b-side of which (version four) is the sweariest thing ever recorded, possibly.

I also have the 7" picture disc of 'Neil' singing 'Hole in My Shoe' (b-side 'Hurdy Gurdy Mushroom Man'). And thw The Young oNes book.

!@#$%! 06.25.2007 06:09 PM

ah ha ha haha ha. alexei etc etc--

you wouldn't happen to know the lyrics of the song, would you??

Hip Priest 06.25.2007 06:14 PM

ahem

It's not class or ideology, colour, creed, or roots;
The only thing that unites us is Doctor Marten's boots

Oh

Doctor Marten's boots of the world so that everybody could be free
They're classless, matchless, heat resistant, waterproof and retail for only 19 pounds and 99 pee

Pretty soon everyone will be wearing those boots with the air-flow soles;
And your boots will have a meeting and your boots will take control

Thanks to Doctor Marten everybody will have two warm feet; thanks to Doctor Marten they'll be dancing in the street

No - don't you want me.

OK, Boots; do your stuff...

Doctor. Marten's, Doctor Marten's, Doctor Marten's boots!
Doctor. Marten's, Doctor Marten's, Doctor Marten's boots!
Doctor. Marten's, Doctor Marten's, Doctor Marten's boots!

!@#$%! 06.25.2007 06:15 PM

^^^ ahhahhaha ha ha hahahahaha haha ha ha!!!

thank you. repped.

I was planning on buying that, but never got round to it. I think that's the only Rik Mayall/Adrian Edmondson related series i havent yet seen.

jon boy 06.26.2007 05:39 AM

i just keep thinking back to when rik tries to kill himself with laxatives and when vyvian kicks his own head down the train track. motorhead where amazing on this as well.

He (Rick) was a person I was terrified I might actually be; I was always scared that secretly I was a total wanker. To be honest, I still have that fear.

Rik Mayall.

mangajunky 06.26.2007 09:44 AM

I voted Rik, because he always makes me laugh but my heart belongs to:

I have to admit that when we bought it I thought it might prove to be less funny than we remembered. But it's very good (I don't think the first episode is as good as the others for some reason - personal taste, probably).

Nigel Planer ('Neil' in The Young ONes is astoundingly good as Richie's seedy agent.

Hip Priest 06.26.2007 12:36 PM

HEY !@$%!, look at this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVIrcaet1Jw

jimbrim 06.26.2007 05:44 PM

Hip Priest - Have you watched any more Comic Strip episodes lately? I used to think a lot of the episodes were a bit crap, but after watching them a number of time's, they started to grow on me. I watched the two 'Four Men In a Car/Plane' episode's earlier on, havent laughed so hard in ages.

Hip Priest 06.26.2007 05:48 PM

The 'four men' are amongst the best, definitely.

My favourite was always 'A Fistful of Traveller's Cheques'.

We haven't resumed yet, no. I can remember most of them though because I've watched them whenever they've been on TV in the past.

hotbutterknives 06.26.2007 05:49 PM

vyvyan was hilarious, that show really was brilliant
