how many rad guitar solos does J.Mascis pop on average per day?

a quick calculation leaves me with an average (over the course of a year) of 62.5

any raise on that?

also I just figured out that 50 cent is the sylvester stallone of rap, get rich or die tryin being his Rocky and the massacre being rambo, doesn't bode well for fiddy.

screamingskull 06.29.2007 07:00 AM

he will do more than that, but some won't be released and some will suck.

therealglenstyler 06.29.2007 08:43 AM

yeah I didn't include any fluffed or just average solos in my workings out, just rad.

say two point five solos per song (average)
a touring repertoire of twenty/twenty-five songs of which twenty two might be played on any given day.
if soundcheck = three total songs (gross)
and you accept that a touring day represents a useful 'mean' day for J. and represents a rough mid-point between say a rehearsal day when he might pop many more solos than average and a day when he pops no solos at all (assuming there is such a thing).

then i believe that comes to 62.5 solos a day.

can anybody corroborate this?

sarramkrop 06.29.2007 08:48 AM

How many guitar solos does it take to make J Mascis pick up his guitar? None, he just has to think about having a wank.

HECKLER SPRAY 06.29.2007 08:54 AM

ah ah ah !!!
I really imagine him thinking about a wank while doing a guitar solo...

Ahhhh... that's gooood...

nicfit 06.29.2007 08:57 AM

does he have a daughter named Samara?

atsonicpark 06.29.2007 08:59 AM

i don't really understand what makes a "good" guitar solo? i mean, maybe i do... when i listen to necrophagist, i am like "oh that solo is really melodic but complex. good solo!" i mean, most death metal bands have killed solos. but then i hear j's solos get praised and i'm like "hmm.."

certainly, a lot of j's are tolerable, but... i dunno. i never really "got" long solos. and i probably couldn't differentiate a "good" solo from a "bad" solo, because any solo that goes over 30 seconds is probably bad.

so yeah. i dunno.

i just usually hate guitar solos.. especially greg ginn's and the slayer dudes'.

On that picture he looks like he's performing fellatio on himself.

HECKLER SPRAY 06.29.2007 09:12 AM

Yeah, I'd like to cut his hair on this pic to see what he's really doing...

Savage Clone 06.29.2007 09:14 AM

No matter how many, it will always be less than the number of simultaneous Dino threads going on this board at any given time.

therealglenstyler 06.29.2007 09:37 AM

are you saying that J.Mascis cracks one off roughly 62.5 times a day? my nuts are aching just thinking about it.

see, J's solos are so amazing because they're imrovised and not too technical. he never plays the same thing twice and they all sound so raw.

but anyways he doesnt practice every day, so it should be per week which i would say 28.

J mascis is the alpha and the omega
he is the king of kings, the lord of hosts
he is the third coming of the second coming.

J mascis is to all things what he is to all people
he can make the sunshine grow
but he is NOT the one who makes the grass green.

I'm the same way, I don't like solos except for a few hardcore solos, Greg Ginn included, as well as some like, little stun solos and shit in Minor Threat and stuff... but for some reason, I dig a couple of J's solos. Some just feel tacked on, however... Every one in a few is cool, though.

Rob Instigator 06.29.2007 01:59 PM

you people have to stop thinking of guitar "solos" as some sort of separate added on thing. that is only the case with shitty fuckers. a solo of any type is just a part in a song where ONE instrument carries the melody for a while instead of the voice or the whole group.

the guitar supplanted the piano which supplanted the saxophone in rock n roll. The sax was first and rock songs always had a stomping sax solo, then the piano became the forefront member, and piano solos would make you dance and jumop and shout and freak. Once the guitar became the entrenched instrument de rigeur for rock n roll the guitar solo was the main event.
punk music began to get rid of the guitar solo, not because guitar solos suck per se, but because they had come to symbolize everything that was bloated and decadent andstupid in big time arena/AOR rock of the time. hardcore punk took it even further. The problem was that punk, and hardcore in particular are such constricting musical idioms that they quickly became boring. people like j mascis and Doug marscht who LOVED the guitar and who could play the fuck out of the guitar told the goddamn punk and college rock stalwarts to shove it up their asses because they were going to play solos and they were going to do it in a way that made everyone shut the fuck up about it.

the second half of MOTE is essentially a guitar "solo"
most of sonic youth's skironk breaks are guitar "solos"

J!

Toxa 06.29.2007 03:01 PM

I can't imagine how many solos he's got in his head... amazing musician.

exactly, he doesnt give a flying shit about what you or anyone else thinks. But he's a loving person, he doesnt hate hate anyone due to worshipping Amma.

pbradley 06.29.2007 06:50 PM

I dig Mascis and he's written a lot of my favorite music but you guys are sounding a little psycho with the overboard love. Usually I find it a disservice to idolize people. Kill Yr Idols, anyone?

Basically fan worship is the lamest, most pathetic form of flattery.

m^a(t)h 06.29.2007 07:16 PM

i hate j. mascis, i hate guitar solos
