To buy or not to buy...

...this guitar

It would be about $150

It's made in China, brand name is SX, sold thru Rondo music. Alder body, P-90s, skunk stripe maple neck with rosewood fretboard with 22 jumbo frets, 25 1/2 scale. Jazz/Jag style bridge and trem, comes in Red, Black, Sunburst, and this color.

this would only be if my Mex Strat deal falls through, I'm trying to get a pretty rough mex strat for $100, but it doesn't come off pawn until July 11

m^a(t)h 06.29.2007 10:00 AM

buy it

MellySingsDoom 06.29.2007 10:11 AM

If you can roadtest one, try it first. It does look pretty good, a novel twist on the Jazzmaster.

That's the only problem. The only place I can find to buy one is Ebay. I've checked the site but I don't think you can order from there

atsonicpark 06.29.2007 10:14 AM

$150 is great.

just get a firstact.

king_buzzo 06.29.2007 10:14 AM

no.

just get a jazzmaster.

nicfit 06.29.2007 10:15 AM

But buy it if you have a lot of spare money. It's nice to have lotsa instruments to play around with.

The thing is I don't really need it. I've already got 3 guitars, all crappy, so that's why I'm trying to get the Strat. This guitar would just be for SY/MBV stuff, so it would serve a limited purpose.

then refer to my previous post, stop buyng "meh" guitars and start saving for a really good one (in case your other deal doesn't work out, you'll have 250$ ready)

Sonic Youth 37 06.29.2007 10:24 AM

Would you consider a Mexican Strat a "meh" guitar?

nicfit 06.29.2007 10:26 AM

nope, I said "in case your other deal..." (the strat) etc. It should sound good.

andrei 06.29.2007 10:28 AM

i looks awfull... but it can be shaped really nice...you can turn it in a Jazzmaster... if it sounds good, buy it

Ah, I misunderstood. Thanks. The body has a few dings out of it and it's a bit dirty, but everything sounds goods.

king_buzzo 06.29.2007 10:37 AM

actually, i changed my mind, buy it, now.

gmku 06.29.2007 02:04 PM

No. Never buy a guitar you can't play first. What about the action of the strings, the feel of the guitar holding it. Don't. Save your money and buy something you can take the time to check out in a store.

yeah, they are different.

i agree with gmku, you gotta try whatever you want to buy. but if you really want a mexican Fender, get a tele, cause theyre pretty amazing.

but yeah i think you should just save the money and get something real.

I mean, I've got a Squier Tele, a Teisco, and a cheap Les Paul copy. So, a Mex Strat is a step up.

I second that, Teles are better than Strats.

Dudes are all pussies. I need as many guitars as I can get, plus, it's so cheap anyways!
I which I could afford to buy a ton of shitty guitars (I will... soon)... for one: I use a ton of tunings, having guitars for easch would be right on... two: even just for one song, it's awesome to have guitars that songs can be built around, or that you can just use for like one song (see: early SY guitars).

My explaining sucks tonight... sorry haha.

I kinda agree with you, i mean the SX is a decent company proabbly better and or more well known for making affordable electric bass guitars, a friend/bandmate has a shortscale bass by SX and its pretty sweet. but in most situation you shouldn't buy a guitar without "test driving it"... but for $150 and the way it looks its not really a bad deal even if it needs some work ie intontation adjustments (unless the neck is completely warped) i mean saving money to buy an expensive vintage jazzmaster in my mind is for those people who are in "working bands" the musician who just wants to tinker at home and is in a band that plays locally doesn't need to buy "$1000+ type" of guitars, i mean please go get a grip, unless you a friggin rich spoiled little brat... i always found it funny when i see kids that can't play but think they are and are handling a vintage jazzmaster thinking their shit don't stink... i always thought that the type of amp is a bit more important than the guitar unless the guitar has bad electronics or a warped neck. believe it or not there are a few Squires that are play better than some comparabale Fenders... as there are some Epiphones that play better than some comparable Gibsons.

I bet the body design makes it hard to keep the strap on.

It's a measure of my boredom that I'm commenting in a guitar thread.

I agree with the above. Mostly I think that you could stick the best guitarist with the shittest guitar and they can make it sing. By contrast, you can have a million absurdly expensive guitars, loads of effects pedals and a rack of a million amps and if you're shit, you're just going to be shit and loud.

My first electric officially died last year. My second electric was cheap as piss, but it's not broke and it makes nice sounds, so I'm happy.

"never buy a guitar you can't play first"
i have got a couple guitars that i didn't play before buying (the rick being one of them, i went in and saw it and bought it in 5 minutes, loaded it up in my car and took it home) and they turned out fine. the rickenbacker may actually be my favorite guitar.
