Modest Mouse show

Someone i know dragged and pleaded with me to go see modest mouse with her on last thurs.16th. it was the VERY WORST show i have ever been to. I will say though the crowd was sure into it, which was strange becuz i was somewhere else trying to regain my balance in order to satnd up. but what a drag show.I just know i would never listen to any of there music.
but if you like it and it makes you feel good , do it or listen to it, i guess.

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 08.20.2007 09:29 PM

They are horrible live. I saw them right after they sold out because I liked their earlier stuff. Worst show ever. The Walkmen were more entertaining. and the Walkmen blow.

Pax Americana 08.21.2007 01:01 AM

I agree. Saw them a few months ago. The sound was fucking terrible, I was really dissapointed. I had heard they were mostly shit live though, so I guess I shouldn't have been so let down.

CHOUT 08.21.2007 01:05 AM

I don't think there's a band currently out there that I'm more indifferent about than Modest Mouse.

therealglenstyler 08.21.2007 10:05 AM

yeah! i have exactly the same experience, a friend really wanted to see them, we saw them, the crowd was going bananas and it was the shittiest most brown music i ever heard. no wait, that's an insult to the colour brown (which in some shades can be quite natty).
I have the same with the arcade fire and spoon, what the fuck are people finding to enjoy in this trash? can anyone seroiusly tell the difference between spoon and modest mouse?
my suspicion is that those earnest mid-level indie bands where they draw a little too much uncritical inspiration from bruce springsteen are to america what drab whiny mewlers like snow patrol/coldplay/starsailor/athlete/embrace/ etc, etc are to the u.k.

i.e. music that somehow bypasses the ears and simply appeals to people who hate music but respond to the supposed integrity of the bands as some kind of truth in opposition to the percieved lie that is all the overtly marketed and "popular" music which they like to feel they are too sophisticated to fall for.

longest sentence on the sonic youth board.

cellscape 08.22.2007 11:03 AM

I've seen MM twice. Both times were at festivals and both times sucked. I'm not a huge fan but do like some of there material. Both shows we're after "Sail On" so there was a huge crowd. Needless to say I was back a ways and the music just sounded like back ground music with no emotion. I've heard mixed things live and always thought I would give them a chance in a venue if it was convenient. Flaming lips have also always bored me at festivals.

atsonicpark 08.22.2007 01:39 PM

what is "sail on"?

pbradley 08.22.2007 03:59 PM

Wow, people who originally don't like Modest Mouse's music not liking a Modest Mouse show. Who would have thought. Thanks for unbiasedly exposing these frauds.

I like Modest Mouse, but I'm in total agreement that they suck live.

pbradley 08.22.2007 10:31 PM

No doubt, I've heard they suck live myself and I don't think I would want to see them but hearing it from people that already don't like the band is just irritating.

davenotdead 08.22.2007 10:43 PM

yeah...i havent made any effort to see them live....but srsly, Lonesome Crowded West and This is a Long Drive for Someone With Nothing to Think About are absolutely fantastic albums...you gotta give Isaac Brock that...

I do not. Were it not for the existence of the Moldy Peaches, Modest Mouse would easily be the most annoying (and bafflingly successful) group of the last decade. Everything about this band has rubbed me the wrong way from the very beginning; their guitar tones, the vocal style (one of the most abrasive I have experienced in recent memory), the songs. "Maturity" has not helped them either, but I remember when they first emerged and how shocked I was that they were able to build such a rabid fan base with music containing so many elements that are total dealbreakers for me in issues of taste and quality.

pbradley 08.22.2007 11:08 PM

I don't think there is one Modest Mouse album were I haven't dug at least half of the tunes on it. Even the evidently "uncool sellout" Good News. Hold it against me or not, I don't care.

But I suppose I can see why they're recorded appeal fails in the live venue.

Ooh, touché.

Silent Dan Speaks 08.22.2007 11:19 PM

Maybe I'm crazy or maybe they were having a good night, but they were fantastic when I saw them.

Norma J 08.23.2007 02:44 AM

Modest Mouse are one of them bands that it's 'cool' to shit on, on this board.

I like them. Though, I've never wittnessed them live. But I could only imagine it to be good.

atsonicpark 08.23.2007 01:11 PM

"breakthrough" is an amazing song.

whorefrost 08.23.2007 06:12 PM

I saw them at ATP 04. My friend and I concurred that they were completely unremarkable live even tho we sort of dug their records at that point.

That was so good, it's going in my sig.

TheMadcapLaughs 08.24.2007 01:46 AM

I love the first 3 records, good news, eh, the new one, i have not listened to it much and probably wont, but eh.

I saw them live, and I dont even really remember it. It was pretty unremarkable. I heard they were good way back in their early days though.

timtimtim 08.24.2007 11:10 AM

I saw modest mouse in March and it was a great show.

cellscape 08.24.2007 12:44 PM

Atsonicperk,

I meant "Float On" but then you probably figured it out. Truth be told, I got it mixed up with Bad Brains "Sailin On" which is a much popular song in my personal library.

John Violence 08.25.2007 02:03 AM

I saw them at ATP 03 and thought they were great. I took my chances and saw them a year later in a smaller place and was dissapointed. They are 1-1 with me.

ditto it took long enogh for someone to make a modest mouse thread there early stuff is amzing

elix it 08.27.2007 07:15 PM

The whole "their earlier stuff was way better" rant is really fucking old. They suck. Have you heard their new single? It sucks.

People complain and moan about how their new material isn't as good as their previous. Well then, if you're going to complain about something that you know isn't going to be good, why go in the first place?

I mean, come on people.

Silent Dan Speaks 08.27.2007 11:08 PM

I for one really like We Were Dead........

I still don't care for Good News though.

atsonicpark 08.27.2007 11:13 PM

elix it confused me a bit.

I saw them at Siren Festival a few years ago. This was either right before or right after "Good News". It was excellent. They played an awesome version of Cowboy Dan.

I saw them once before that. I also wasn't at all disappointed.
