just been to see battles.......

excellent live band. real real good. i never saw em before and missed them the last 3 times they were in ireland. at last i caught them, well worth the trip but yknow, now i have seen em, i have no desire to see them again, unlike many bands that you would want to watch again and again. a battles gig is a very one off thing.... anyone else feel that?

king_buzzo 08.25.2007 07:07 AM

awesome, I think i had the chance of seeing them, but didnt go.

davenotdead 08.25.2007 10:38 AM

i think im going to see them in a month exactly from today...such a trip though...but it will also be my first time in sydney....

greenlight 08.25.2007 12:38 PM

you went Paul? I wanted to go, but changed my mind in the end. bollox.

atsonicpark 08.25.2007 02:35 PM

was alvin of the chipmunks singing during this?

nicfit 08.25.2007 03:30 PM

And I guess theodore was on the drums.

PAULYBEE2656 08.25.2007 03:36 PM

it was the largest crows outside a festival that they ever played to! completely sold out, i was lucky i got a guestlist due to my illustrious connections. they adore ireland. theyve played 8 gigs over here in the last 12 months and are coming back to do a 10 date tour early next year.

i spoke to ty and dave after the gig in the bar and they are perplexed why they are so huge over here. next thing they will be supporting the chemical brothers in a field at 4 in the afternoon with about 1000 people there.... that usually happens with bands in ireland, "oh look, they are critically acclaimed, lets put them on a unsuitable bill and charge €70 to see em for 30 minutes..."

great gig but ive seen em now and im happy.............. stainer has to be seen to be believed, he was the highlight of the show, amazing drumming........

strictlycommercial 08.25.2007 06:25 PM

Yeah, I was at that gig and I'd kinda agree with you. Glad I went & worth the price but I doubt I'll go next time they come around (at least not untill they have a new album out).
Stanier was a fucking sight to behold, such a big man, such a small drum-kit.
I thought it was a weird audience, they kind of seemed to fade in and out, like everyone was really tired or something. Still a good show though.

PAULYBEE2656 08.26.2007 04:18 AM

majority of the crowd were to concentratred not trying not to stroke their chin..... or tryingto dance to em. i mean you are gonna look like a tool dancing to battles arent you.....

i love the dublin muso scene, its sooo, erm, poseuring in an unposeuring way. its like, "yeah, im the shit, im so cool...erm, well, im kinda cool, i think.....am i,????"

atsonicpark 08.26.2007 07:08 AM

i was really seriously inquiring if they did those "crazy" alvin and the chipmunks vocals

nicfit 08.26.2007 07:18 AM

they obviously did, adam. check youtube for live vids, they do the singing and all.

nicfit 08.26.2007 07:21 AM

atsonicpark 08.26.2007 08:12 AM

Haha, I know they do, I was just hoping for Pauly to give me some hilarious insight. Like, "yeah man alvin started singing while the chipmunks bashed away and I fuckin lost my balls" .. okay, that wasn't hilarious. Pauly'd be hilarious though!

atari 2600 08.26.2007 08:23 AM

I'd see 'em again.

PAULYBEE2656 08.26.2007 02:30 PM

sorry adam, yeah alvin was there but john stainers crash stand fell on him and squashed him a bit. chipmunk gizzards everywhere...... theodore was real upset! tyondai used alvins remains for his hairpiece.......... via the laptop......

by the way, he wouldnt tell m the atlas lyrics... he said that they would be too stupid to speak out loud! ian williams said basicaly that you really dont need to know them!

PAULYBEE2656 08.26.2007 02:31 PM

got to say tho. stainer is some drummer. i thought brian chippendale was good. fuckin hell...................

atari 2600 08.26.2007 02:34 PM

wish i had recorded 'em

PAULYBEE2656 08.26.2007 02:36 PM

that boot you sent was the identical set list as they played friday btw!

gmku 08.26.2007 06:12 PM

What I want to know is, is the singer really a clerk, whoa ee oh?

atsonicpark 08.26.2007 06:30 PM

haha. I always thought it said "Sing this hook, wah ah oh." Yeah.. "People will be people when the air is stagnant, wonder in the dark, we'll begin to travel, people will be people will be, people will be people when the end is here, won't you show me the beginning, we'll begin to travel. sing this hook, wah ah oh."

I don't know what else he says.

gmku 08.27.2007 01:23 AM

Funny, everybody I ask hears something different.

atsonicpark 08.27.2007 01:14 PM

damn alvin.

drrrtyboots 08.27.2007 02:35 PM

Going to see 'em friday with Deerhunter opening, should be good.

Mmm, spot on. Hope your not too serious though, personally I can't stop myself from dancing to battles, though its more of a spastic foot tap that ripples upwards to an extent, not much in the way of cordinated movement. I definitely can't keep still anyway. And besides, I look like a tool dancing to everything...

Nice one talking to Ty & Ian, they seem like pretty cool people, and yeah, I'm fairly sure no-one really needs to know the Atlas lyrics. I'm sure the bridge bit is 'Sing this hook, oh wey oh' and I'd doubt the rest is much deeper. Sounds good though.

I thought Stanier was going to pop an artery playing the start of Race:in with the way they all took so long to get ready and he was just curled up in a ball rattling off that snare/hi-hat thing as fast as he could.

gmku 08.27.2007 09:25 PM

It sounds exactly like "Singer is a clerk" to me, though. I don't hear "sing this hook" at all.

i acnt dance so i wont. kept my arms away from the chin, folded and nodded my head repeatedly and awkwardly. i was the one in the shellac shirt just in case we were in close proximity!!!

Incesticide 08.28.2007 07:36 AM

I've seen them for the Pukkelpop Festival, it was awesome.

nicfit 08.28.2007 10:39 AM

you guys know if there is some pro-shot footage of their lives floating around the net? I never found anything beside the youtube stuff, I hope one or more of the festivals they played will be broadcasted or something (same goes for SY, actually).

Might have a point, in that live vid it does sound like "singer is ..........". Can't get the last word, but I don't hear "clerk", or "a" for that matter. Shag it, this is going to annoy me all day. Better crack out the headphones...
