Is or Are?

When talking about bands, do you say is or are?

Sonic Youth is an awsome band...

or

Fallout Boy are an awful band...

I think both are correct. It's very debatable.

But what do you use?

...damn, I messed up the poll and I can't add one anymore.

Пятхъдесят Шест 05.06.2006 07:20 PM

I don't see what difference it makes though. Honestly.

finding nobody 05.06.2006 07:21 PM

i say is. but, like you said it is debatable.

you gonna be on xbox live later?

HaydenAsche 05.06.2006 07:33 PM

Is. The subject is singular. One band.

wearescientists 05.06.2006 07:45 PM

hayden is right...1 band not many sonic youth's

Everyneurotic 05.06.2006 07:48 PM

i've got a dislexic heart; so don't ask me

That depends on what you consider to be Sonic Youth.

Sonic Youth as a single entity (is) or as a group of people (are). I think it can go either way.

No! Our wireless router is fucked up, and we have to use the cable that plugged into my xbox to plug into the very computer that I am on now. So I won't be on in a while.

HaydenAsche 05.07.2006 12:00 AM

Sonic Youth = A BAND

A BAND. NOT NUMEROUS PEOPLE.

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:02 AM

Hayden is right, grammatically speaking. but, in the whole scheme of things, does it really fuckin' matter?

YES. IT DOES.

Alex's Trip 05.07.2006 12:14 AM

I still say it can go either way.

Do you refer to a football team that way?

"The Raiders is crap"?

A TEAM. NOT NUMEROUS PEOPLE.

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:17 AM

"Raiders" is not a collective noun. "Youth" is. "Team" is, too.

Пятхъдесят Шест 05.07.2006 12:21 AM

So....Raiders are a collective pro-noun?

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:22 AM

no, "Raiders" is a plural noun, like "members" or "guitars".

Пятхъдесят Шест 05.07.2006 12:24 AM

Right on.

Пятхъдесят Шест 05.07.2006 12:25 AM

Mmmhmm. Once again, who cares?

stirling 05.07.2006 12:26 AM

The White Stripes are
Sonic Youth is
The Flaming Lips are
Pavement is

hmm, good point. but, in the case or our beloved Sonic Youth, i still think that Hayden got it right.

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:34 AM

wait a mintue.

you used "the" in those sentences.

is SY really The SY?

finding nobody 05.07.2006 12:35 AM

wow man. what a heated debate!

i say you guys just have a break-dance competition. and the winner will automaticly be right.

alex vs. hayden let's get it on!

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:35 AM

god, i'm not even listening to my own argument. this shit DOES NOT MATTER.

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:38 AM

well...i guess we're both right. if we refer to them as Sonic Youth, "is" should be used, but if we refer to them as the Sonic Youth, "are" should be used.

Пятхъдесят Шест 05.07.2006 12:38 AM

Thats one album out of fourteen or whatever though, power in numbers.

We're all losers.

Good ol' wiki wiki wiki wiki wiki wiki wiki pedia.

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 12:52 AM

hmm, that didn't help much.

noumenal 05.07.2006 01:06 AM

Yeah, I think the point is that there isn't a good rule - just say what sounds right. The Beatles are.....Sonic Youth is.....whatever

stirling 05.07.2006 01:10 AM

What about Was Not Was?

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 01:15 AM

Was (Not Was) is.

EDIT: ok, after a visit to allmusic.com, Was (Not Was) was (not is).

I'm really not sure how you got 'asshole' from my question.

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 02:06 AM

i believe AssBlaster said that in jest.

stirling 05.07.2006 02:18 AM

Maybe you're right.
I was all ready for a messageboard fight, but clearly he got scared and ran away.

stirling 05.07.2006 02:23 AM

lol
That's exactly what I meant.
What did I win!

youthoftomorrow 05.07.2006 02:32 AM

new development: my father (a newspaper editor) thinks that it should be "Sonic Youth are" and "the Sonic Youth is".

PunkerViolence 05.07.2006 06:42 AM

hahaha fucking laaaaame thread

Trasher02 05.07.2006 07:05 AM
