Sega Megadrive

I got mine out from the attic today and it won't work on any of the TV's in my house :(
I remember my mum buying it when i was about 5 and i would spend hours playing it, i had some great games for it.

Sonic the hedgehog
Fantastic Dizzy
Toegam & Earl
Toegam & Earl in Panic on Funkotron
The Ren & Stimpy game
Mega Bomberman

Most of these games i never completed as you couldn't save anything with a memory stick, so if you died that was it, you went back to the beginning. I never got another game console, i had the mega drive all through my teens, but rarely ever played it.
Anyone own one or used to own one?

screamingskull 08.29.2007 04:03 PM

All this nostalgia has come from spending time with my aunts step children who are 7, 9 and 10.
They have an X box and a Playstation 2 and were asking me about what games i played when i was their age, i said there really wasn't much around then, so i would read or get taken to arcades, then i got a Sega Megadrive and i played with that.
They had never heard of it and it made me feel really old.

My friend Dylan had a Sega Megadrive, I went over to his house when I was about 7 and played on his games. Then Playstation 1 came out and our lives began.

screamingskull 08.29.2007 04:09 PM

what games did he have for the megadrive?

Danny Himself 08.29.2007 04:09 PM

I don't even remember, it was so long ago..

has to be the same thing since it's 16 bit (I would think).

Dear Friendly Neighborhood Screamingskull,

You need a RF Modulator.

Try Radioshack.

Good times.

screamingskull 08.29.2007 04:23 PM

thank you. Evil Bad Evil Floatingslowly.

floatingslowly 08.29.2007 04:32 PM

thing is, you might still need that tv/game switch that came with the system so that you can screw it onto the terminals.

I doubt that that the back of those boxes accept the output cable from your game system.

screamingskull 08.29.2007 04:36 PM

i might just borrow an old Tv from my grandparents.

God, this thread makes me feel old.

My first encounter with home computer gaming:

Not exactly Resident Evil, I think you'll agree.

The Megadrive, and Nintendo's SNES, were both good machines. The Megadrive's reputation was ruined somewhat by the fact that they handed out game licenses to anyone who turned up at the door, so there was a load of rubbish released. With the SNES you had a much better chance of finding a quality game, and I think that's what turned us into dedicated Nintendo fans.

YES YES YES

I LOVE the Mega-Drive, Sorry for being all annoying and retro but I have one and I love it. Rven the name sounds cool. The look of it everything it, just everything is awesome. But what I love more than anything is the Mega-Drive music.

PS I got the one with the added MegaCD attached.

Pax Americana 08.29.2007 06:59 PM

I had a Genesis, (Mega-Drive, whatever!) that was awesome. I had a bunch of the Sonic games, I had the first 3 Mortal Combat games, and I had Streets of Rage 2 (I think it was 2) which was killer.

atsonicpark 08.29.2007 07:19 PM

Mega Drive kinda sucked.

However, I do have a Genesis with 130 games... classics like Gunstar Heroes, Alien Soldier (yep, I got my Genesis modded to play it), Landstalker, and one of my all time favorite games Beyond Oasis... I used to have about 250 Genesis games but I paired it down to the ones that I actually enjoy and/or the ones that are actually worth money (Streets of Rage 3 usually runs about $70, and I have it.. Phantasy Star IV usually runs about $50 and I have that)... though I love the Genesis, my SNES collection is better.

Was never a huge fan of the Mega drive, loved the hidden game on the inside of it though, and I loved the other 'main' Sega systems (Dreamcast was probably the last really good gaming console).

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 08.29.2007 07:22 PM

I never had a megadrive. We got our first computer when I was 7.

My first 2 games were:

and

Those are both probably in my top 10 video games ever

atsonicpark 08.29.2007 07:35 PM

OH fuck.. i just remembered some things.. zombies ate my neighbors (which i own for snes AND genesis and i have the sequel "Ghoul patrol")... best multiplayer game ever.. i actually ripped the soundtrack to mp3 a few years back :)...

i've beaten streets of rage 2 well over 100 times.. no kidding..

my favorite genesis game is actually probably kid chameleon.. if only because i had it for 12 years before i finally beat it last summer.. i beat all 100+ levels.. it was one of the best moments of my life.

speaking of 16-bit gaming though, i think i love the genesis a bit more than the snes because it had more solid games, all the games on it are way faster (blast processing), and genesis games always had better music (i love playing contra hard corps or castlevania bloodlines or rocket knight adventures with headphones plugged into my genesis), even though it didn't have the jaw-droppingly amazing games like chrono trigger and my favorite game of all time, super metroid..

Everyneurotic 08.29.2007 10:10 PM

sonic!!! i forgot that one, ace game.

screamingskull 08.30.2007 11:07 AM

So...................i got it to work and have spent the whole day playing games on it, i still suck at Fantastic Dizzy, but the Ren & Stimpy game made me laugh out loud.

jon boy 08.30.2007 12:12 PM

i had an atari st and i fucking loved it!

Glice 08.30.2007 01:34 PM

I'm just a smidge older. Following someone's namesake -

I had one of these bad boys

Including a couple of games that were on cards rather in cartridges that I doubt any of you remember 'cos you're all noobs. Or something.

I feel ill.
