What's a good book for a girl in the 8th grade?

Just wanted to hear from some of the female gender on what books you came across when you were 12-13 that had a postive effect on you...made you think.... thank you.

floatingslowly 09.04.2007 09:52 AM

Are You There God? It's ME, Margaret.

Hmmm a bunch of suggestions from dudes in their 30's. Thanks but could anybody else give it a shot?

davenotdead 09.04.2007 10:49 AM

im not yet 30, but ive got nothing for you.

floatingslowly 09.04.2007 10:49 AM

my guess is that seeing as it's a tuesday, and school is in session, it's going to be hard to find the 12-13 year old girls who post here on right now. they are like, uh, in school, and stuff.

no worries though, Glice should be back soon.

This request isn't for any specific age group to respond. I'm just looking to give my sister a book and was curious what if any books people read when they were that age that they look back on as being a good read.

Daddylikes 09.04.2007 12:33 PM

I'm not a woman...but...when I was 13-14 I read a lot of sci-fi/poli sci type books.

1984, Farenheit 451 (the fact that both of these stories are LOVE stories escape many), Brave New World, A Clockwork Orange, The Andromeda Strain, Jurrassic Park, etc, were all great reads when I was that age.

As far as gender specifics are concerned? Eh. Blah. Genderism is so 30 years ago.

silverfreepress (sdasher) 09.04.2007 12:44 PM

Maybe Mother Night by K.Vonnegut

I didn't start reading in a rabid fashion until I was 14 and I somehow feel that those books would be too much of a mind spasm for someone I feel is very young.
I mean yeah... it's not like I'm passing off the Anarchists Cookbook....ok thanks SYGossip

screamingskull 09.04.2007 01:06 PM

8th grade is year 7 isn't it? apart from shakespeare i read

Cardinal Rob 09.04.2007 02:16 PM

Naked Lunch?

h8kurdt 09.04.2007 02:46 PM

Bloody hell. Here's some decent choices

The Colour Purple
and
Oranges aren't the only fruit

Both decent novels and don't patronise the reader.

Roald Dahl- Boy

I know it is an autobiography about Roald Dahl's being a young boy, but for males and females at age 13 it is a very good read.

!@#$%! 09.04.2007 03:51 PM

jeezus, with this thread

get her some basic poetry, nothing about fucking-- khalil gibran or something.

as for novels-- im not well-versed in girly literature, i dont know-- don't people read "little women" anymore? i always liked the tomboy one, i forget her name-- jo? yeah.

when i was 12 i used to read a lot of adventure novels-- verne, salgari, all that shit.

girls are supposedly more into social life & relationships, or so the zoologists say.

floatingslowly 09.04.2007 03:52 PM

You must spread some poop around before pooping on cryptowonderdruginvogue again.

Rob Instigator 09.04.2007 03:54 PM

for a girl in 8th grade get her...

I don't know. I did not realize there were any 8th graders left that read.

Cantankerous 09.04.2007 03:55 PM

when i was about that age i read:
naked lunch
fear and loathing
various ginsberg books
a clockwork orange

etc...i don't think any of that shit is above 8th grade level. then again i remember some kids were still reading harry potter so it depends.

and i think they made us read of mice and men in school but i'm pretty sure i read the first page and tossed it aside.

Rob Instigator 09.04.2007 03:57 PM

i was reading vonnegut and sci fi in 8th grade

but I am male, and a nerd

ha ha ha, you're too hard fucking core cankers. i like your internet persona. but i think deep down you might be a softie after all. and naked lunch is a boring fucking book, except for the part about drugs.

i melt when i see kittens and sparkles. i'm not hardcore.
i didn't cry when i broke my collarbone when i was eight but that's because it didn't hurt. i couldn't feel shit all down my right arm. however i wailed when i almost cut my left thumb off.

Rob Instigator 09.04.2007 04:15 PM

I have read JUnky, naked lunch, and some others whose names I forget and every single Burroughs book is pure unadulterated SHIT

when Nikki Sixx says his fave book is Junkie, you know it is crap.

Cantankerous 09.04.2007 04:21 PM

nikki sixx is a twat if there ever was one. didn't he do a speedball or something and sort of "die" for a couple minutes and then they revived him?

screamingskull 09.04.2007 04:23 PM

why do people still do speedballs? don't they just kill you?

(On that note, RIP River Phoenix)

Cantankerous 09.04.2007 04:28 PM

it was back in the 80s that he did that but people still do them. fucking stupid combination, i don't care how high it gets you, it's just not good sense.

Rob Instigator 09.04.2007 04:36 PM

the same thing killed John Belushi, and the comedians chris farley and Mitch Hedberg, and nikki sixx did die from it and was revived. There was even a rumour that Nikki sixx had died and they replaced him with a fake nikki sixx a la beatles and (f)aul McCartney

one's

screamingskull 09.04.2007 04:39 PM

and he was so preeeeetttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttttyy yyyyyyy, no one will ever be that pretty again.

Damn Speedballs

Cantankerous 09.04.2007 04:39 PM

he was pretty. he had great hair.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 09.04.2007 04:50 PM

he was so good in My Own Private Idaho

screamingskull 09.04.2007 04:53 PM

PRETTY PRETTY PRETTY

damn.

Joaquins not bad, but he's no River.

Rob Instigator 09.04.2007 05:04 PM

joaquin was jealous of his bro and sis having cool hippie names so he chose to be called LEAF for a while, until he grew oput of it,. he was credited as LEAF PHOENIX in Space camp

Look at this picture. You will see joaquin/leaf pheonix, the guy who rachel fell in love with when she worked at the clothing store on friends, the dude that played the gay guy Lamar Latrell in revenge of the nerds, lea thompson, from the back to the future movies, kelly preston who is married to tom hanks and has a good career, and kate capshaw, who has made lots of good movies.

hiow can this not be a cult classic? it sucks!

luxinterior 09.04.2007 06:25 PM

I don't remember most of the books that I read when I was that age...basically just whatever was on the bookshelf in our classroom at school. I think I read a lot in elementary school, but not as much in junior high. I'm pretty sure I liked "A Wrinkle In Time" a lot, and the other books in that series. I liked adventure books. I think I read "Treasure Island" eight times and finally the librarian at my school just let me keep the book. I also loved Roald Dahl books, especially "Danny, The Champion of the World." If you can find one of his short story collections, I think that would be a good choice. I guess I wasn't so much into the very girly books. Most things I read could appeal to both boys and girls.

Cardinal Rob 09.04.2007 06:33 PM

At that age I enjoyed "Animal Farm" and "The Wasp Factory".

total-trash 09.04.2007 06:33 PM

i couldn't get through a wrinkle in time. i hated that book

atsonicpark 09.05.2007 12:22 AM

but yeah.. in 8th grade, i read a clockwork orange, slaughterhouse-five, uhhh... that's all i can remember.

atsonicpark 09.05.2007 12:32 AM
