Smashing Pumpkins albums

What's the best / Your favourite???

Gish
Siamese Dream
Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Adore
Machina/The Machines of God
Machina II/The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music
Zeitgeist

jennthebenn 09.06.2007 09:39 AM

siamese dream came out of the mothballs for me a couple weeks ago...
still sounds tremendous. "quiet" is very underrated.

screamingskull 09.06.2007 09:40 AM

every now and then i re-listen to them after not listening to them for a long time, and i realize how great they were, they wrote a lot of shit songs, but the good ones were very good.

I have been listening to 'Slow Dawn' and 'Set the Ray to Jerry' a lot. 'Slow Dawn' has a lovely guitar sound to it. And as much as i love taking the piss out of Billy he can really really write good songs.

Washing Machine 09.06.2007 10:28 AM

yes, Siamese Dream will always be amongst my favourite albums. That album is just so magical, Mellon Collie has some great moments and adore is just beautiful throughout. The problem is around Machina they lost all the emotive qualities that made them great. They stopped feeling real.

Everyneurotic 09.06.2007 10:32 AM

for me, it's probably between gish and half of mellon collie...gish is the one i've been listening to the most lately but the good songs in mellon collie are amazing and more timeless.

still, they were more like a singles band.

some of their greatest songs ever were b-sides.

Torn Curtain 09.06.2007 10:33 AM

Adore for me (that album is often undeservedly bashed here I think, maybe because it's not "noisy" enough).

Danny Himself 09.06.2007 10:38 AM

Mellon Collie!

I still haven't heard Machina II, Zeitgest or The Aeroplane Flies High, though.. :[

my friend is a huge pumpkins fan and that's her favorite album.

atsonicpark 09.06.2007 11:09 AM

adore is the only one i like from beginning to end, though i like a few songs from siamese dream.

Bicorn Halfelven 09.06.2007 01:17 PM

I would have said Pices Iscariot, but it wasn't on the list.

samuel 09.06.2007 01:31 PM

my top three:
Machina/The Machines of God
Zeitgeist
Adore

Toxa 09.06.2007 02:08 PM

Pisces Iscariot (b-sides)
The Aeroplane Flies High (b-sides)
Mellon Collie
Gish
Siamese Dream
Adore
Machina II
Zeitgeist
Machina I

what should I vote? :(

Obscured is one of the best songs ever. I also love the Fleetwood Mac cover.

pbradley 09.06.2007 02:56 PM

Melon Collie was one of the first albums I bought so it gets sympathy points except for the fact that it's mostly too melodramatic for me to listen to nowadays. Siamese Dream is pretty cool.

king_buzzo 09.06.2007 02:59 PM

Gish & Siamese Dream

LittlePuppetBoy 09.06.2007 03:19 PM

Siamese Dream will dominate this thread.

StevOK 09.06.2007 03:59 PM

Current order:

Mellon Collie
Siamese Dream
Machina II
Gish
Pisces Iscariot
Machina I
Adore
Zeitgeist

I don't have the other b-sides comp, but I love every album I've got. Zeitgeist isn't even all that bad.

ZEROpumpkins 09.06.2007 06:18 PM

Siamese Dream was, back in the day. Then I sold all my pumpkins cd's for $70. Totally worth it.

Danny Himself 09.06.2007 06:19 PM

I'm so indie I kept my pumpkins records.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 09.06.2007 07:19 PM

Zeitgeist

LAWLERSKATES
jking
Gish is my favorite

I'm so indie, I made copies of the albums onto tapes and sold the cd's.

Pax Americana 09.06.2007 07:40 PM

Siamese Dream.

gmku 09.06.2007 08:13 PM

I've said it before but I think it's profound enough to merit repeating: listening to Siamese Dream makes me love everyone, even Porkie.

total-trash 09.06.2007 08:22 PM

where's pisces iscariot goddamnitt.>!/

contrelefuckingsexisme 09.06.2007 08:36 PM

siamese dream
adore
machina

Bicorn Halfelven 09.06.2007 11:34 PM

"Starla" and "Drown" are my two favorite moments, and they're nowhere to be found on the poll... which is fine, but I just thought that it should be known that those are the two greatest Corgan guitar freakouts.

Washing Machine 09.07.2007 03:13 AM

Nice to see some Pumpkins love, Zeitgiest was atrocious though, the mix was was one of the worst mixes i've heard in sometime, particularly on the vocals.

"Hipsters unite. Come align for the big fight to rock for you"

king_buzzo 09.07.2007 03:34 AM

zeitgeist is bullshit if you ask me.

ZEROpumpkins 09.07.2007 04:38 AM

Pumpkins are bullshit if you ask ME.

Washing Machine 09.07.2007 05:56 AM

Zero you seem like one of those reformed alcoholics that now thinks alcohol is evil. Just think about what drew you to them in the beginning. Siamese Dream is a masterpiece in the utterly heartbreaking, emotional and romantized teenage suburban dream/nightmare. It reminds me somewhat of Slint's Spiderland.

auto-aim 09.07.2007 06:10 AM

Adore is a really great record. I did vote for siamese dream though.

gmku 09.07.2007 06:36 AM

I went through a hate Pumpkins phase in the mid-1990s, but it's hard to deny that those early albums are masterpieces, especially SD. I also really dig Gish. And I have a lovely bubble gum pink 7 inch on Sub Pop of Tristessa, with a great photo of the band on the cover from the days they preferred showing Darcy front and center. It's funny but when I first got into them, the publicity photos led me to think she was the leader of the band. I was a little disappointed later to learn the band was almost all Corbin. I hate it when bands turn out to be not real bands but more like a one-man show. Removes some of the charm.

D'arcy was hotter!

jennthebenn 09.07.2007 07:12 AM

after seeing them live this past august, i can tell you two things for sure
about SP: they still play the hell out of their older, best known material,
and they desperately miss the inimitable stage presence of mr. james iha.

He's a good musician but he's so apathetic I can't see how he could have stage presence (or maybe you were being ironic ?).

screamingskull 09.07.2007 07:47 AM

aaaa ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

No seriously this is my favourite era of the SP

Well, I think she's much better-looking than D'arcy actually. She also rocked during the Machina tour.
