Big Black

Despite all the praise they get around here, I am yet to see a thread dedicated to them. My mum did not approve of the cover of "Songs About Fucking". She thought it was a porn album (audio porn?).
Anyhoo, discuss.

demonrail666 09.14.2007 06:06 AM

atomiser is still one of the most violent albums i've heard.

ZEROpumpkins 09.14.2007 06:29 AM

I'm listening to it now. It's very cool. Passing Complexion and Kerosene just kick so much ass.

ZEROpumpkins 09.14.2007 06:37 AM

Shallac are also good, but sound a bit different. At Action Park is a very good album.

Maybe he had been busy making the last shellac sound so fuckin' amazingly. The production on that is a miracle, uff. Never heard the stooges album, though.

Rob Instigator 09.14.2007 10:36 AM

swa(y) is right. awesome color's album was better than the stooges new album by a mile, sad to say.

Big Black is one of my all time faves. I think the tide is turning again in the underground music scene and that harsh abrasive yet interesting bands are making a comeback. I miss the days when big black, the butthole surfers, sionic youth were all skullfucking us to ecstasy with their mayhem, you know? what happened to the anger? emo drained the shit away by concentrating on bullshit love songs disguised as rebellion.

bring back the anger people!

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 09.14.2007 10:38 AM

Don't forget Rapeman!

Everyneurotic 09.14.2007 10:40 AM

speaking of cheap trick...

awesome "he's a whore" cover they did.

yeah, i love them, i love all bands albini has been involved in.

I got that Rapeman album for cheap eons ago.
It still doesn't get a much play as "Racer X."
I love Big Black so much.
Shellac has never been as much to my liking.

Rob Instigator 09.14.2007 12:55 PM

shellac is the middle aged big black.

good good stuff. that song COPPER is a fucking beast of an animal.

atsonicpark 09.14.2007 01:07 PM

Big Black, obviously, one of my all time favorite bands. My old band RUINHORSE (www.myspace.com/RUINHORSE) was essentially what we figured Big Black would sound like in the 00's. It's not my favorite Albini band (that'd be Shellac), but I really wish they'd re-release/remaster some of that old shit, because a lot of the rarities have been out of print for years.. I can just see "songs about fucking" remastered with essays and a really good-quality version of "Burning Indian Wife" (songs about fucking-era song and one of my favs). That'd be great.Anyway, Scissor Shock did a cover of "passing complexion", you can go download that at www.soundclick.com/scissorshockI have said this in another thread, but when I went to buy songs about fucking, my mom was standing there, so I didn't say the title.. she didn't care about picking it up after my order came in.. but I couldn't say "Fuck". I guess I've had that album uh... 6 or 7 years now..Now that I'm thinking about it, I tihnk I dig Rapeman a bit more than Big Black.. the only problem with Rapeman obviously being that they weren't around very long.Big Black were a band that really knew how to do covers... "In My House" is one of the best covers ever. And let's not forget their Kraftwerk cover (though bands who cover Kraftwerk almost always end up improving the song).

Rob Instigator 09.14.2007 01:15 PM

just got paid today, got me a pocketful of change...

atsonicpark 09.14.2007 01:19 PM

I guess all Albini bands know how to do good covers, actually. Just Got Paid has such a fucking good riff!

Toilet & Bowels 09.14.2007 01:32 PM

i'm quite happy that rapeman weren't around very long, if they hadn't split there'd be no shellac and more importantly, NO JESUS LIZARD!

Savage Clone 09.14.2007 01:36 PM

I was having dinner at a tiny restaurant in a tiny town in the middle of Montana this summer and I was wearing a Big Black shirt. The waiter surprised me by saying "Hey, do you like The Jesus Lizard?" When I said yes, he told me a story about how he accidentally urinated on David Yow after a JL show in the Netherlands; apparently this guy decided to pee off a bridge and Mr Yow was underneath him at the time. Needless to say, he got quite a reaction.

Rob Instigator 09.14.2007 01:40 PM

I bet he heard "YOW!!"

nick2767 09.14.2007 01:58 PM

Atomiser is a fantastic album. It has such a raw and intense sound. They play like they really mean it.

Just Got Paid Again - what a riff!! Should put that song in the intros thread.

Fuck yes. I'm getting way more noisy and abrasive with my music, and I have no intention of easing up... only problem is that we have no fucking drummer... ours quit. SO... we might have to take the Big Black route hahaa... no, I wouldn't be able to live like that.\

Oh, and Big Black are one of my favourite bands... FUCK they rule.

iskandertime 09.14.2007 03:38 PM

I remember my mother and sister coming to visit me at one of the punk rock crash pads I lived in in the early '90s; you know the lay out: the stink of stale beer, wall to wall carpeting covered with paper match ends and bottle caps, pages ripped out of gun magazines stuck to the walls... and a copy of, yes, "Song About Fucking" proped up on the mantle over the non functional fireplace... Great band, so influential.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 09.14.2007 03:40 PM

Big black is great.
I've got songs about fucking and poor mans eight track.
My mom though the songs about fucking was odd as well.

iskandertime 09.14.2007 03:40 PM

Oh, I also remember the last time I did whippits! In that same apartment, looking out the window at the falling snow, blasting Big Black, until the snow, the sound and the throbing in my head all came together in one huge WHUPWHUPWHUPWHUPWHUP....

king_buzzo 09.14.2007 04:44 PM

I know I have Atomizer on my laptop but I think Songs About Fucking is on my old computer and I really don't feel like putting it on this new one. So I could try to upload Atomizer for you. Any particular way you want it? Last time someone requested Yousendit, but I don't know if you have a preference.

Edit: Badongo perhaps?

ZEROpumpkins 09.14.2007 06:54 PM

Buzzo, use soulseek. Or I can use MSN to hook you up with it.

luxinterior 09.14.2007 07:13 PM

Buzzo check your PMs.

pbradley 09.14.2007 07:17 PM

If you got Atomizer uploaded, perhaps you can toss me the link?

Everyneurotic 09.14.2007 10:35 PM

my theory of rapeman, i've posted it once or twice already, but the thing, two nuns and a pack of mule, the sub pop single and the budd ep are absolutely great, incredible because they show a range and level of emotions a lot more broader than big black (or scratch acid) ever did, but i can't see rapeman making another album, it's like all they had to say was in what they put out and after that they could not do anything else, for that to happen, ws sims and rey washam needed another singer and guitarist and albini needed another rhythm section, and that's what happened. had they carried on, their next album would have been redundant and boring.

that's my opinion.

Norma J 09.15.2007 01:42 AM

Big Black are fuckin' great. I own more Shellac albums though.

nick2767 09.15.2007 02:02 AM

rapeman were excellent, their output and live shows were awsome. But there was such a furore over their name (certainly here in the UK) that I think it ground them down.

heh, i sorry for not reading this thread earlier.

anyways, I like this, but I prefer Shellac or Rapeman. Shellac is my favourite of the 3, at least, I own the most stuff from shellac than the other 2. As for Rapeman, they were excellent and I find the whole name debate and shit hillarious.

ZEROpumpkins 09.15.2007 04:02 AM

buzzo, listen to it more, it will grow on you a bit. Especially Passing Complexion. That's such a goddamn good song.

atsonicpark 09.15.2007 07:49 AM

a few things.

1) yes, that's the link, i guess soundclick.com/[band name] doesn't work anymore -- wonder why.

2) "rapeman".. why was that even a controversial name? he was just a fucking comic book character. it'd be like naming your band "Scrooge mcduck" or something.

3) if you dig big black, you all need to check out the first bastro ep (which sounds identical to big black) and distorted pony (who has 3 albums, and each one sounds like a different albini band -- yes, their first ep even has a drum machine -- and their albums were recorded by albini; great tribute band!).

iskandertime 09.15.2007 08:09 PM

Yes, bastro is great. I got really excited when Bastro and The Jesus Lizard came out, and I totally thought of them as being "post BIg Black" type bands or "those bands with the really good drummers" I really thought Slint was in that genre as well, just, like turning the formula on it's head by playing realy quietly... Tortoise as well! Also Bull, Don Caballiro, Seam, Strorm and Stress, Golden, Shiny Beast and others.

ZEROpumpkins 09.15.2007 09:35 PM

atsonicpark I don't want to sign up for an account to hear your cover. Can you put it on your myspace or something? I'm sure a lot of people would dig it.

Inhuman 09.15.2007 09:52 PM

I heard lots about Big Black and many of my friends have Songs about Fucking. I'm downloading it now

ZEROpumpkins 09.15.2007 09:57 PM

I would reccomend you start with Atomizer, but Songs... is just as good of an album, less angry though.

Inhuman 09.15.2007 10:20 PM

great I'll get that one too.

And wow, this kraftwerk cover I'm listening to is superbe
