Animal Collective on Conan
Animal Collective will be performing on Conan on Oct. 5 (that's a friday)
you should watch it. |
I will indeed. It seems Conan has, well, decent taste anyways when it comes to music; he has a lot of stuff the other late night shows probably wouldn't have. I don't know, maybe it's because of his time slot he has a little more freedom.
|
it has nothing to do with that hateful redhead peckerwood fuck
his staff books who they book to attract the 18-25 year old male demographic. |
yeah, probably true, I can tend to be somewhat niave at times :)
|
What's your beef with Conan, Rob?
|
I hate him and I want him dead
|
that show does have some great music on it though, afterthefact.
just my own personal beef against that flaming cocksmear I'd kick that blue-blood yankee fuck in the neck if I ever got the chance. |
Even if I hated Conan as much as Rob does, I'd still sit through the show to watch AC perform. Maybe I'd just turn it on during the last 15 minutes or so.
By the way, there's now a video for the first single on Strawberry Jam - Peacebone. It's weird as fuck. Check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxvGHQHiY70 |
a few things.
1) conan is dumb. 2) carson daly gets much.. uhm... weirder musical guests than conan. 3) i'm REALLY surprised Animal Collective released peacebone as their first single; that's easily the worst song (by FAR) on that album.. eh? |
I really liked peacebone live about a year ago - it's still a good song, but far from the best on the album. Still you can kinda tell it was produced to be a single. The only song on the album that I really can't get into is Winter Wonderland.
Funny you should mention carson - AC was supposed to be on his show a few months back but it never happened. This will be their first tv appearance. |
I was thinking about what they'll play off the album since most of the "hits" on it are over 5 minutes and Chores seems unlikely to me for some reason.

He wrote some good Simpsons episodes, thats why I can't hate him. |
I guess they do have to play something from that album, huh? Domino would probably be pissed if they went on there to supposedly promote Strawberry Jam and ended up playing some of the material that they are playing on their tour now.
My guess would be Peacebone, since it's the single. Chores would actually be my second guess - I've heard that it's been played on the radio in some places. My vote would be for Unsolved Mysteries - I've seen them play most of the other songs before. |
I only just found out that Deakin isn't touring with them AGAIN and this is disappointing.
|
yeah, he's taking some time off. he's fun to watch bounce around, but nothing about seeing AC live disappoints me. I would have loved to have seen them on tour before Sung Tongs when it was just Avey and Panda with acoustic guitars.
|
Me too, but seeing as I was completely unaware of the almighty collective at the time it wasn't possible. I'm missing their shows in nyc next weekend and am incredibly bummed, i've been wanting to see Strawberry Jams live. They were great when they did the May/June tour though.
|
You wouldn't be seeing much Strawberry Jam live if you got to go anyway. A few songs yeah, but they're mostly playing material for the next album. I want to go see them in ATL on wednesday, but I don't think I can make the drive.
|
I'm hoping on another tour sometime after the winter for my chance to see them again. But the conan performance will be very interesting.

Ok, I'm sure the reason Carson gets the guests he does is because his budget is probably signifcantly less than that of the other shows; he can't afford Gwen Steffani, so he goes for Tegan and Sara instead. :) Seriously though, I doubt somebody as affiliated with MTV and specifically TRL the way he was has the best taste in music. And also, as far as Peacebone being their first single, it does seem that a lot of bands release one of their lesser songs as their first single. I guess the psychology behind it is that if you like that stuff, then you will LOVE the album, and instead of having a bunch of people buy your CD whether they like it or not, only those who will really enjoy it will buy it. That way you hear less criticism and have a stronger fan base. Well anyways, that's my guess :) |
I've always hated this band

|
fine, I've always seen this band as a time thief.
|
care to elaborate?
|
listening to them is a complete waste of my time, thus they steal my time making them thieves.

i really love peacebone. but the whole album is fantastic. my favorites so far (after about 6 listenes) are peacebone reverand green and the perfect beyond words cukoo easily their most solid album (and by solid i dont mean best i mean i dont have as many sudden mood swings like all of their previos efforts) and they are fantastic live, saw em in boston a few weeks ago, they were amazing |
video of the AC

yeah, I do like that video - such a great song. Their neighbors must have loved them.
Here's a video of Avey Tare and Panda Bear playing Winter's Love prior to the release of Sung Tongs: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P0fV-CwlBkQ Contrast that to this performance of We Tigers, I believe last year. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9F5ZthSUcE I like the energy they play with, no matter the style of the song. It's a lot of fun to watch a band that really enjoys playing its music. While I'm at it here's some other videos: Cool version of Purple Bottle (Planet Claire Session) Otherwise unknown song "I've got mine" Video for Leaf House For Reverend Green Live |
wouldn't be amazing if they did cuckoo cuckoo? of course they wont', they'll do peacebone.
also, how can anyone HATE animal collective? i can see someone not being into it, but hatred? how can anyone hate beautiful melodies, beautiful harmonies, original song ideas and structures, beautiful singing, etc? Blows my mind.. i don't sit around and listen to, like, the beach boys every day.. but i recognize their brilliance enough to not hate them. They're just too good. Same thing here. Eh. I'm not saying you have to be in love with them; but universally speaking, they're a pretty hard band to hate. |

true that. |

i don't "hate" them but, it was hard watching Built to Spill rip off Neil Young and then watching Modest Mouse rip off Built to Spill and then watching Animal Collective ripping off Modest Mouse. i wouldn't really associate the term "brilliance" with them. |

and would certainly not just mark them off as a "modest mouse ripoff band" |
I keep hearing this animal collective/modest mouse thing brought up. First off, I'm guessing anyone that's making that comparison has probably only heard the most recent Animal Collective material (or probably only read the Tiny Mix Tapes review of SJ, saying that it sounds influenced by early MM.) and has never dared to look into their back catalog.
If you listen to an album like Here Comes the Indian and still think they sound like Modest Mouse, well then I'm just baffled. However, if you listen to HCTI and you get kinda scared, or are like "what the hell?" then I'd understand a lot more. I've been listening to this band for about 3 or 4 years now and I still can't pin down what they sound like (except maybe the beach boys in some places). Every album has a distinct style and sound. But I also understand that it's not easy to get into them - it took me a long time after first hearing HCTI and Sung Tongs before ever giving them a second go. Feels and Strawberry Jam are different - very accessible, very poppy, still good albums. Studio recordings don't do justice to the energy and sheer wildness of AC though. I've seen Modest Mouse play and I've seen Animal Collective play. I think if you saw them both, the comparisons would stop. But. . . whatever floats your boat. One fewer person at the next AC show! |
For those that dig the AC, more great news. I got this from their board, hope it's fo' real:
On September 28th, NPR will be broadcasting the Animal Collective show from D.C.. How cool is that? |
i've listened to animal collective for 5 years. and i've yet to hear anything remotely similiar to modest mouse.
*edit:* WAIT! I'M WRONG@! both bands have guitars! and off-kilter melodies! shiiiiiiiiit! |
That's cool they're getting the exposure they diserve. But, at the same time I hope they don't get toooo big.
|
I don't think that's in danger of happening, but I wouldn't mind it at all. I want their music to have an impact on as many people as possible.
|
yeah.
i'd rather avey tare's last solo album get popular but that shit ain't happening. it's so beautiful too. I'M THE BACKWARDS MAN THE BACKWARDS MAN I CAN GO BACKWARDS FAST AS YOU CAN |
