Recommend me some music
I've been listening to a lot of Polvo and Mission of Burma lately.
I'd like to listen to anything that is very rocking while still being arty with a bit of pop sensibility. Polvo, WIRE, and Mission of Burma seem to be all right on the mark in that regard IMO. |
Grandaddy
Gumball Can Comets on Fire Jim O' Rourke Sea and Cake "John Zorn, Dave Douglas, Mike Patton, Bill Laswell, Rob Burger, & Ben Perowsky - The Stone: Issue One" Matmos prefuse 73 This Heat Just some suggestions... Might not be what you're looking for, or you already have it... |

Check out the album Why Do They Call Me Mr. Happy? by NoMeansNo. They have several great albums, and a few so-so ones, but this is my very favorite, and matches the description of what you are looking for to a tee. |
Bitch Magnet - "Umber and Star Booty"
![]() I will never tire of recommending this album. |
Made out of Babies (more "hard" than artsy)
McLusky (more fun than artsy but I love their sound) So, yeah, to put an end to these useless suggestion, I'd say: "nirvana" haahaa. |
"Monkey Grip" by Bill Wyman, I have the 8-track if you want to borrow it.
|
Bitch Magnet is promising...

Lift to Experience
The Notwist (of "12" at least) |
alaysa, i love many of the bands you listed, but they have nothing to do with julian's request! julian, i'm going to actually follow your request!: :)
thinking fellers union local 282 <--- like polvo.. but better! truman's water <--- like polvo but less melodic/more insane scissor girls <-- deconstructed no wave with poppy parts occassionally! bride of no no <--- super arty/abstract with chick singing; prog no wave; 10 minute no wave songs with like 500 parts; amazing sun city girls <-- you know them, right? the vss <-- art punk something; "nervous circuits" reminds me of if you mixed the first 3 wire albums in a blender omoide hatoba <--- haha; alternates between pure art to pop to every genre in between; just amazing cerberus shoal <-- get "mr. boy dog"; completely abstract/rocking/arty/awesome |

always nice to see SOMEONE mention band of susans.
why didn't anyone mention pere ubu? *edit: once again, another weird thing where i respond to the first page of the thread without reading the second page and someone DID mention ubu just above this reply. oh well.* |
older stuff:
the first Rollerskate Skinny album rules, but a little hard to find. anything by Rrope. (check out an mp3 here: http://www.sillybirdrecords.com/mp3.html ) more recent stuff: Coughs Child Pornography Aa Warbler honestly i could make a list so big that it would become useless even though all the bands would rule. |
Empty Bottles, Broken Hearts by The Murder City Devils...'90s stuff but nice relaxing organ music.

polvo guitar bears a striking similarity to some captain beefheart like trout mask replica |

I disagree, as someone who counts Beefheart and Polvo as two of his all time favorite bands, I don't think their guitar lines are similiar at all; they both use pretty weird riffs, but Polvo are whammy bar abusers, whereas the Beefheart guitarists mainly just slide everything to death. And Spectral was asking for art punk kinda stuff, not just bands with weird riffs. But.. since you decided to bring up Beefheart.. I've been meaning to do this for a while.. 1. Ice Cream for Crow 2. Lick My Decals Off, Baby 3. Doc at the Radar Station 4. Trout Mask Replica 5. Shiny Beast 6. Safe as Milk 7. Clear Spot 8. Strictly Personal 9. Unconditionally Guranteed 10. Bluejeans and Moonbeams That's what I think. I recently acquired "The Magic Band - Back to the Front", which is former Magic Band members doing instrumental and Beefheart-impressions of their old songs. Okay stuff. The better thing I found was O SOLO DRUMMO, John French doing Beefheart songs on just drums, right? Well, it's a 65 minute drum solo disc. Its amazing. Look for it. |
try the band tttttttttttttttttttt (yeah, that's their name); they have a 3" out on brise cul; instrumental dirty weird out of tune riffage that refers to jesus lizard, polvo, unwound, etc.
also, check out anything on amphetamine reptile. |
amphetamine reptile or skin graft are my <3
|
SKIN GRAFT.
Arab on radar. |
well
arab on radar are okay and probably are the best reccomendation for what he wants (besides us maple) but when i think of skin graft, i think of yowie, space streakings, shakuhachi surprise, mount shasta, melt banana, did scissor girls release something on there? then scissor girls, point line plane, dazzling killmen, collossamite, all my favorite bands. |

don't forget the luttenbachers and ruins. |

they are super neat, though. |
U.S. Maple sayer, you've been repped. One of the best bands ever.
Black Eyes, anything on Skin Graft, I guess getting more punk/hardcore... anything on Three.One.G... etcetcetc... I'm sure lots ahs already been said... did I already post here? |
Quote:
Yeh really! You forgot like, the two best bands on the band! - like! DEFINITELY THE BEST ONES. |
hmm i guess i forgot ruins cuz my favorite album by them is on ipecac! but yeah, no excuse for missing flying luttenbachers.
for the record, my favorite skin graft band is either dazzling killmen ("face of collapse" is a future classic album) or mount shasta. |
Saw Scotland's Twilight Sad (www.myspace.com/thetwilightsad) at SXSW earlier this year. Most intense band I've seen in a long while, walls of white noise.
Another couple I came across from the same area that I reckon are worth a listen are Broken Records (www.myspace.com/brokenrecordsedinburgh) & Frightened Rabbit (www.myspace.com/frightenedrabbit) |

well all i have is trout mask so thats what im talking about and when i saw polvo for celebrate the new dark age he used the shit out of the slide. and also of course cb has the two guitarists with two very different styles so i dont know if thats creating disagreement as well. and striking similarity is certainly a relative term but still one day a couple years ago i was finally really getting into trout mask and i was all whoa what a sec wtf i never saw that one coming in a million years. |
Yeah, it's no biggy, and it's good that someone loves beefheart and polvo; nice to meet you! Haha.
I was just saying.. I don't think Beefheart was really the kind of stuff was looking for. |
A few of the bands mentioned I'm already familiar with -don cab, hella, go4, chrome, pere ubu, the flying luttenbachers, captain beefheart, PIL, Can, and the Fall. There are a few others you mentioned that I know of but I'm not very familiar with.
I enjoy all of them, although I thought the luttenbachers were a little pretentious when I saw them live. What's with the drummer looking like a bug? Seriously! It is a dumb gimmick. I'm checking out some of the suggestions right now. Everything is good so far. |
