Popular music opinions

Or sacred truths about certain musicians or bands that seem to get a bashing for either the wrong reasons or unfairly. You start first because I have to dash off to see someone.

ZEROpumpkins 10.05.2007 06:28 AM

Originally put in the unpopular thread, but it fits here better:

Soft Bulletin is easily the most overrated alternative album of the last 10 years. Flaming Lips are overrated and are only famous for their live shows.

pbradley 10.05.2007 06:52 AM

Appealing to public opinion is a wrong reason. Try again.

alyasa 10.05.2007 06:59 AM

Sonic Youth are really good.

gmku 10.05.2007 07:09 AM

I can't come up with any. This kind of question makes my head hurt.

pbradley 10.05.2007 07:13 AM

There is nothing sacred, only the ever-present constuction and destruction of paradigms.

alyasa 10.05.2007 07:16 AM

So, you're saying there is no truth?

ZEROpumpkins 10.05.2007 07:21 AM

That's a swa(y) worthy idea there, pbradley.

pbradley 10.05.2007 07:31 AM

Your opinion is overrated.

ZEROpumpkins 10.05.2007 07:32 AM

That too.

We could go on like this for a while or we could have a nice cup of tea.

pbradley 10.05.2007 07:34 AM

... in creative expression. Tautologies like "music is sound and silence over time" exist. The only limits to artistic expression are the artist and the medium. You can say it is true that the guitars in this song are distorted in this way, but you can't say that it is true that the guitars are beautiful/ugly/boring/etc.

Perhaps I'm misreading the question because I thought the subjectivity of taste was a commonly held notion here.

"Exile On Main Street" was the first Grunge album.

fugazifan 10.05.2007 11:01 AM

the velvet underground are the greatest rock band of all time.
the velvet underground and nico is the greatest rock album ever recorded.
fun house is the second greatest rock album ever recorded

Glice 10.05.2007 11:57 AM

Abba gold is a brilliant album.
VU & Nico is a great album.
The Carpenters were great.
Nevermind was good.
Dirty is a good album.
I will survive is a great song.
Karaoke is fun.

I'm finding more and more fleshworld people these days - I know at least 6 - who'll admit that MCR are a guilty pleasure.

SynthethicalY 10.05.2007 12:21 PM

Are you talking about My CHemical Romance Glice?

alyasa 10.05.2007 01:40 PM

Grunge rocks big time...

finding nobody 10.05.2007 03:59 PM

Both Lennon & McCartney were genius in different ways

Throbbing Gristle ruled.

demonrail666 10.06.2007 04:02 PM

according to the crazy world of indie:

a. black music is only of any real value when highlighting the plight of the black man.

b. three chords are better than four

c. music in the seventies only really started with punk

d. synthesisers are the spawn of the devil.

e. if it doesn't happen in new york or london, it doesn't happen

Danny Himself 10.06.2007 04:17 PM

CCR are great, and CPR is therefore the greatest medical procedure ever to be performed.

Little Feat don't exist.

pbradley 10.06.2007 05:18 PM

If you can't dig Minutemen's "Shit From An Old Notebook," you don't dig.

There are sacred things-your ears just haven't heard them yet-

The VU are not the greatest rocknroll band of all time.
I thought VU were good, cool out there and yes they were-then I heard
Fire of Love-and it blows all that velvet underground school of rock ,class project rock band stuff -away.

this should be in the unpopular thread...:D

Funny how you say there are sacred things but go and post one of most disageed opinions in the thread.

ZEROpumpkins 10.07.2007 11:29 PM

Yeah, but I think it's generally accepted that VU aren't the best rock band. They are certainly good, but not the best.

the ikara cult 10.08.2007 10:53 AM

Ok Computer really is that good

And when the critics got on at Kid A at the time it was released they were so fecking wrong (this made me mistrust music critics from a young age - a skill many should learn) and now everyone has re-evaluated it as a work of genius which they should have realised at the time.

Amen.

MellySingsDoom 10.08.2007 05:42 PM

Popular opinion: The Clash are the classic UK punk band.
My opinion: The Clash are a big bunch of meh.

alyasa 10.08.2007 06:04 PM

Television, especially Marquee Moon, is an obvious influence on Rather Ripped.

pbradley 10.08.2007 06:24 PM

Pussy Galore is the best driving music.

ZEROpumpkins 10.09.2007 01:27 AM

Silver is the worst Pixies song and it appears on the best Pixies album.
Gigantic is the best Pixies song w/ Kim on vocals.

alyasa 10.09.2007 02:15 AM

Jim O' Rourke is much better as a solo artist, than as a member of Sonic Youth.

ZEROpumpkins 10.09.2007 02:28 AM

I think that one has been said a bit in this thread haha. Having Jim in SY didn't hurt though.

Yes, they're seen as the most influential rock band (in the sense of prompting band formations), not as the best.

Torn Curtain 10.09.2007 09:17 AM

Marquee Moon is really great (and one of the best NY and 70s albums).

I wholeheartedly agree with this.

sarramkrop 10.09.2007 09:28 AM

That's disputable. I don't think that the best music comes necessarily from people who come from shitholes, especially because certain fringes of the creative working classes take it almost for granted that their suffering is going to automatically make them better artists, or artists who know better about their plight than someone from a more privileged background. Shitholes also produce a great amount of shit music.

pbradley 10.10.2007 12:16 AM

I don't believe that creativity can be put into a formula, no matter how many "more likelys" you stick in there.
