Best Gangster movies?

Huh?

nicfit 11.02.2007 08:46 AM

Miller's Crossing! :D
Out of that list my fav is probably Goodfellas, not sure that's the best one of the lot, though...

jon boy 11.02.2007 08:51 AM

goodfellas and sexy beast get my vote and casino would also if it where there.

alyasa 11.02.2007 08:52 AM

I'm gonna rent and watch the movie that wins this poll.. ;)

floatingslowly 11.02.2007 08:56 AM

I can't choose. there are too many I like on the list. :(

if I was threatened with concrete-tennis-shoes, I'd pick goodfellas though.

PS: I haven't seen Ghost Dog, but have been meaning to put it on my netflix queue. is it decent?

sonicl 11.02.2007 08:57 AM

Time for a bit of vagueness now: About 10 years ago there were two films released at the same time, by the same director and both starring Christopher Walken, one of which was a gangster movie and the other one a vampire movie. I liked them both (although the vampire one is my preferred one), and the gangster one would get my vote for my favourite gangster movie if only a) I could remember its name, and b) it was one of the options in the poll.

floatingslowly 11.02.2007 08:58 AM

Suicide Kings?

val-holla-ing 11.02.2007 08:58 AM

ghost dog is hilarious.

my vote would have to go to "american gangster." even though it's not out yet, i got ahold of a dvd quality bootleg last week and it is a-fucking-mazing. since it's not up there, though, i say "scarface."

sonicl 11.02.2007 09:04 AM

Gangster one: The Funeral
Vampire one: The Addiction

atari 2600 11.02.2007 09:10 AM

voted The Godfather

haven't seen American Gangster

no time for listing at the moment

just a reprint / La Cosa Nostra

some mob comedies (some have some dramedy) worth seeing

Midnight Run
Broadway Danny Rose
Mad Dog and Glory (Murray/De Niro/Thurman)
The Freshman (Brando parodying his role as Don Vito=priceless cinema)
Some Like It Hot (the AFI ranks this as the #1 comedy of all-time...now that's a laugh)
Johnny Dangerously
Bullets Over Broadway
Prizzi's Honor
Family Business
Crimewave
Analyze This (skip Analyze That)
Suicide Kings
Be Cool
Get Shorty

american gangster isn't out until today, but somehow the dude who cuts my hair got a copy and started making copies for folks.

king_buzzo 11.02.2007 09:22 AM

hmm, I picked Goodfellas and Scarface.

Although I think they're both overrated, but I like Goodfellas more, shame that I didn't get to watch the ending (disc fucked up)

ThePits 11.02.2007 09:27 AM

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels should have been on that list
Layercake is good too
Snatch wasnt bad

atari 2600 11.02.2007 09:36 AM

never saw layercake

alyasa 11.02.2007 09:45 AM

Actually, to be honest, I think Eastern Promises is the best gangster movie I've seen so far... But if i put it on the list, it'll outshine everything else... :P

Rob Instigator 11.02.2007 10:02 AM

I voted Goodfellas. best gangster movie ever

I personally LOVED ghost dog, but I know many who did not enjoy it.
It makes sense to watch it as if ghost dog was mentally ill. There is some seruiously funny shit in that, especially the mafia guy who loves rap

I found Lock Stock to be a bit dull, I don't like seeing movies about wanna-be mobsters.

Rob Instigator 11.02.2007 10:02 AM

I liked layercake better thn lock stock. good movie

coen powers activate

no country for old men

Rob Instigator 11.02.2007 10:05 AM

to me the Usual Suspects is not a gangster movie. it is a hesit movie, a movie about criminals/thieves. criminals are not automatically GANGSTERS.

To be a gangster movie you have to deal with organized crime families in some way, whether they be italian, japanese, irish, etc.

for that i also do not see Scarface (a movie I love) as a gangster movie

!@#$%! 11.02.2007 10:31 AM

shit, of those, godfather wins.

though goodfellas is pretty fucking great too

now that scarface is it the original scarface or the brian de palma scarface?

you forgot a ton of great shit, for example

branded to kill

much better than "the departed", tssssssssssssssssssssssss.....

Rob Instigator 11.02.2007 10:43 AM

I thought the departed was BORING.
I mean, BORING

yeah no shit. mediocre & forgettable.

atari 2600 11.02.2007 10:48 AM

good with Mitchum
The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973)
(low-budget '70s gold (also features Peter Boyle))

disappointing with Mitchum
The Yakuza (1975)
(written by Paul Schrader just before Taxi Driver, (he did Raging Bull too))

is it really as good as imdb rating suggests?
I know imdb is kinda meh for ratings , but still 9.1 is really impressive ha ha.
I wish I lived in a country were all movies in theathers had the "original language" option to choose. Dubbing sucks. Seeing great movies on dvd with original language is cool, but I wanna see them with the big screeeeeeen argh.

HEH!
:D
she's a nice nose.
You lucky hollywoddiancountry inhabitants!

fugazifan 11.02.2007 11:13 AM

i voted godfather with the public enemy coming in second.

i think Mickey and Nickey should have been on that list.
it is one of the more powerful and different gangster movies that i have seen...

atari 2600 11.02.2007 11:23 AM

The Public Enemy with Cagney was on AMC or TCM or somesuch the other night and I watched a few minutes. Saw it years ago (White Heat too) on VHS loan from the library; they were pretty good.

Seriously.....I mean how many fucking times do we really need a movie about the "undercover rat." The acting was pretty good though.

Rob Instigator 11.02.2007 11:45 AM

tha acting was good, but the movie was so slow paced, so tiringly structured.

Nic's complimentary comments are what made me wonder.

who knows though. can't really judge a person's age based on photos alone.

haha no need to be sorry, I just figured you would be more in the know.

I've never seen a pic of his wife, I've only seen one of him, and he has so far managed to deftly avoid OKC.

ps- keep my wife out of this cesspool

floatingslowly 11.02.2007 12:26 PM

well, she did look a little young, but then, I was told today that my facial hair now makes it seem as if I'm "not 12".

related/unrelated: I have a headache and I feel like I'm going to explode. times like these make me want to either disappear like Hoffa or wack somebody.

What came first to my mind: Goodfellas, Casino, Mean Streets (if that counts), Scarface (De Palma, I haven't seen the original), The Godfather, Once Upon A Time In America... and also Melville's Le Samouraļ and Le Cercle Rouge, both which I have just seen recently and absolutely loved...

Oh and I really liked Ghost Dog too (which has to many references to Le Samouraļ, by the way)...

I am not able to choose one at the moment, though.
