Sleep Lack

Hooligans and esteemed sages,

What's the longest you've ever gone without sleeping? Why? What effects did you notice (if any) of this sleep lack upon your behaviours, perceptions, and general everyday experience?

Everyneurotic 11.12.2007 11:16 PM

five days where i slept perhaps 30 minutes in total, without the aid of any substance.

i wasn't tired but it felt weird being awake and things were like misplaced, kinda hard to explain.

by the fifth day, i was hallucinating big time.

!@#$%! 11.12.2007 11:16 PM

i sometimes get a pleasant high & lack of inhibitions after a night without sleep. i mean i get positively goofy.

but eventually i collapse. i've never skipped 2 nights in a row-- at least not that i remember. never was much of a cokehead.

Everyneurotic 11.12.2007 11:24 PM

i didn't do anything special to keep me awake, i just didn't want to sleep.

i used to be insomniac, that's a whole other beast.

i was going to put five days but it wasn't a speed binge so i refuse to cast my vote.

eatmychild 11.12.2007 11:26 PM

This is currently my second night in a row without sleep, last night I had to write an essay, and as my brain was expecting to sleep, thought processes were slow and the essay took all night to write.

I felt that goofiness all yesterday, kept thinking of particularly stupid things (asking a girl if she'd ever considered growing a mustasche), and laughing uncontrolably at innane things (I stumbled and kicked a fence on a public street, which caused a knocking sound, which coincided with an abnormally loud fart that escaped from me without my cooperation. I was laughing at this coincidence of events for about 5 minutes.)

Then I decided I may aswell not sleep tonight, just for kicks.

yeah, yeah, that's the good part!

after than you need your Zs or your neurons start to die like tiny lemmings

but if you need to work a 3 hour nap should tie you up sufficiently

anyway, happy headaches. eat fish.

pantophobia 11.12.2007 11:32 PM

both times to London have been rather sleepless, and traveling in general

last year no sleep on the plane over then couldn't sleep at Toilet's flat, especially since his couch bed was very uncomfortable when they got back from Wolf Eyes we all had tea and marmite, and got maybe an hour of sleep after being awake for 36 hours, then about another 20 hours awake going over to Minehead, so about 1 hour of sleep in between 56 hours with alot of walking and standing

i remember the first time i stayed awake past midnight, it was in Cape Hatteras, NC after night fishing on the surf with my dad and his brothers over 15 years ago, that was quite fun

pbradley 11.13.2007 12:01 AM

I noticed I'm more creative when I miss sleep. I think you've all seen my upside letter posts, etc.

Of course this last only a while till I hit a wall.

!@#$%! 11.13.2007 12:03 AM

funny that this thread would suddenly appear, i'm going to pull an all-nighter to finish some work.

mighty sardine, i invoke thee

kingcoffee 11.13.2007 12:06 AM

I was once up for 6 days straight.

When I was in third grade my insomnia was at its worst. I was visiting relatives for a couple of weeks in West Virginia. For the first week I did not sleep a wink. I was absolutely exhausted yet I could not sleep no matter what. The first couple days were pretty crummy, but aside from the usually fatigue, everything was ok. By the third day i was feeling pretty sick, by the fourth day I started having panic attacks and on the fifth day I started hallucinating. I witnessed an Alladin figurine from macdonalds that was placed on a shelf in the guest bedroom float from one side of the room to the other. When I looked back at where it had originally been, it was back in its right place. I started freaking out. The next day I told my parents what had happend and how long I had not slept and they took me to a hosptial where they gave me a sedative to help me sleep. I've had awful insomia for the past 20 years, but never had I been so bad off as that week.

Everyneurotic 11.13.2007 12:07 AM

brain food, brain food, keeps the neurons from dying

to stay awake, nothing like

hat and beard 11.13.2007 12:18 AM

For several very good reasons I never sleep when I travel:

1)can't sleep on planes
2)bad with jet lag
3)save $$$$ on hotels
4)cram the most fun possible into a short period of time
5)way more outgoing/adventurous/stupid/goofy without sleep
5.1)leads to all kinds of unusual adventures/encounters

My last trip to San Francisco I stayed awake a full three days, slept 20 straight hours, then stayed up for another two days. I remember not a thing, cept that I left with much less money than I came with.

Everyneurotic 11.13.2007 12:19 AM

try nuts (no albur intended).

Inhuman 11.13.2007 12:28 AM

That sounds like quite a terrible week kingcoffee, sorry to hear about the insomnia.

I also had a hallucinatory experience, but it was a number of other things. I had been awake for over 24 hours, dehydrated from drinking the night before, and I had nothing to eat since lunch the previous day. It was mainly auditory though, I kept hearing unusual phrases in different voices in my head end on end. The combonation distorted things at first glance. I saw a man fishing by the pond (I was at work), and as soon as I focused my eyes on it, it returned back to a rock. This happened with a number of things I saw, but it wasn't too bad.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 11.13.2007 01:05 AM

When I was a senior in high school, I stayed up 3 days on acid (along with my ex and 3 other couples) during thanksgiving break.

Good times.

Class yourself as either never sleeping (surely this category would never be used unless for lengths of sleeplessness unpredicted by the conservative poll) or... if you dare... as Drummond. I would recommend the never sleeping category.

apples, cheese, fish, nuts, & huevos feed the sesos. (no albur intended either!)

but apples & cheese will make you sleepy. apples: agua de manzana para los loquitos.

it's all about the right phosphorus-calcium balance.

!@#$%! 11.13.2007 01:35 AM

i've got HUEVOS!!!

okay it's time to get back to work.

ZEROpumpkins 11.13.2007 02:27 AM

Umm well I went to a movie marathon once. I got up at 6:30 that morning to go to work, then went to the marathon at 11 that night. Stayed awake till about 8am the next day feeling energetic and happy, then suddenly got massively tired. so that was about 26 hours.

I was with my friends and we watched Superbad (which was awesome) but all the other movies were crap so we just went to the foyer and chatted for the rest of it. Time flew by, 4 hours of talking just felt like 1 hour, and if I wasn't tired, it would have felt much longer, so I guess you could say that it made time feel faster. Also I felt happy and I always feel connected to people at night (not sure why). We walked around a park at 4am after but decided against a bush walk.

The previous time i went to such an event however, i felt horribly sick in the morning.

ALIEN ANAL 11.13.2007 02:32 AM

i think i did 48 hours

ZEROpumpkins 11.13.2007 02:47 AM

Drugs?

ALIEN ANAL 11.13.2007 02:53 AM

nah just bored
i couldt afford to have enough drugs to keep me up that long

eatmychild 11.13.2007 03:18 AM

At the moment (approaching the 39th hour) if I'm still for too long or have my eyes closed for over 3 seconds I start experiencing hypnagogia.

Also I keep remembering parts of NWW songs that I listened to yesterday. That may not be functionally related and directly causally dependent on the sleep yen though. I just realised that most of these exerpts are from the sme song! Coolorta Moon... Moons are visible at night, night is when the body mostly wants to sleep, coincidence?

just dont fucking drive. once i was driving cross-country after a LOOOOONG day of physical work, and then a night with no sleep, and around 1pm being in tennessee i found myself on the left lane after i "blinked" for longer than i should have.

lucky fucker, didn't kill or get killed, i immediately pulled over, proceeded to take a nap, and then drove to the nearest motel where i slept like a dog for 13 hours straight.

yeah. FUCK DRIVING WITHOUT SLEEP.

one of the most fucktarded things i've ever done. for fucks sakes.

but truly...

eatmychild 11.13.2007 04:22 AM

Yeh that's scary, I don't have access to any cars in this locale, so I should be safe from that risk. I trust myself to stay awake when crossing roads. Lectures are gonna be a bitch though.

The Lung 11.13.2007 01:25 PM

So how long have you been awake now Rory? Are you planning to stay up until thursday? The weed will definetly fuck with your head in the wood.

jon boy 11.13.2007 02:12 PM

think the longest i have been without was about 40 hours or so. that was because of flights and not being able to sleep in airport lounges etc. it was a very strange experience and i have done it a few times. i just went into a kind of dreamy auto pilot where everything seemed far away somehow and i didnt really care about anything.

EMMAh 11.13.2007 02:27 PM

I've never gone more than 48 hours without sleep. I used to get about 3 hours of sleep every night though.

the ikara cult 11.13.2007 02:38 PM

I misreplied, ive actually gone 4 days without sleep, unaided by anything other than tea. Stress is great isnt it.

jon boy 11.13.2007 02:40 PM

when my neice was sick and in a lot of pain etc i slept only a few hours, if that a night for a week. it seemd as if i had been awake forever at that point.

For future reference, sleeping is a far better way of avoiding boredom than staying awake.

eatmychild 11.13.2007 02:54 PM

I'm gonna try to stay up until I go to bed on Wed night, cus I'll want to have rested before I drive anywhere. In total should be around 80 hours.
