Recommend me some good party music.

I'm having a party and need something to make them dance their socks off.
No top 20 hits please.

ZEROpumpkins 12.06.2007 06:02 AM

Well, personally I'd reccomend Mesh Gear Fox.

h8kurdt 12.06.2007 06:14 AM

2manydjs

A review of this album said "If this doesn;t get everybody at a party dancing, you're at the wrong party"

2 of these guys did the 2manydjs album.

Or this-

Seriously.

nicfit 12.06.2007 06:14 AM

Which kind of "party" will it be?
60's music would be inappropriate?

Tokolosh 12.06.2007 06:20 AM

There's no particular period.
Anything goes. Weird shit included. As long as it's not something that everyone's heard a million times.

nicfit 12.06.2007 06:27 AM

ouuu kayyy.
Not sure which songs/bands are "popular" in your area, but here are some suggestions:

Desperate Guys / I Disappear/ Paranoia Attack - The Faint
Bend Over Beethoven - !!! (the break/restart in the middle is great)
Icarus Smicarus / Collagen Rock - McLusky
Pussyfootin' - Brainiac
The mercury Craze - Subtle
Attack of the Ghost Riders - The Raveonettes
Shotgun Funeral - Party of one
King Of Nothing - Old Time Relijun
something "rocking" from Chrome Hoof's last album
something by japanese absurd-pop band Ex girl and maybe polysics too.
Somthing from V-Twin's "The Blues is a minefield"
maybe even something from A.R.E. Weapons' debut
we share our mothers' health by The Knife

(I'm editing this with more stuff as it comes to my mind)

atsonicpark 12.06.2007 09:27 AM

My party would have Omoide Hatoba (put in "Osaka Ra").. perhaps Renaldo and the Loaf.. Six Finger Satellite ("paranormalized" era).. DJ Pica Pica Pica.. you'll be rocking all night!

Tokolosh 12.06.2007 09:28 AM

I've been looking through most of the recommendations you guys posted. Some very good stuff.
Any suggestions of bands combining guitars/drums with electronic music?

Savage Clone 12.06.2007 09:32 AM

The first Third Eye Foundation LP is like MBV but with breakbeats...

A few of the bands that put records out through the Source label sometimes use guitars and drums, with varying degrees of success. If you can find it, there's a good compilation that is called 'Source Rocks' which is quite good and a bit odd. It has stuff stuff like the funkier cuts from Phoenix next to the more medieval-sounding early tracks by Sebastien Tellier. I can up it, if you want it.

Did you ever listen to Matt Elliott's 'The Noise We Made'? It's almost gothic in parts, but not quite.

Savage Clone 12.06.2007 09:40 AM

Order their new LP:
http://www.myspace.com/skoalkodiak

Seriously, these people are amazing and get large crowds of normally reserved Midwesterners moving in a major way on a regular basis.

And there are some electronics at work. Also there is a bleach bottle involved.

I am unfamiliar with this.
Thanks for the tip.

Laid Back - White Horse (4:46)
http://www.badongo.com/file/5458409

wiki:
Laid Back is a Danish group formed in Copenhagen by Tim Stahl (keyboards) and John Guldberg (guitar) in 1979. It is best known for its hit "White Horse" from 1983. They were able to focus on their music and "White Horse" after they were fired from their day-job in a dispute over $100 with a drunken publisher.
Though originally released as a B-side, its international standing was raised with the release of the 12-inch single "White Horse," (1983) a funk-influenced dance song with a memorable baseline that became popular in US dance clubs. The record was championed by none other than Prince.

Windows Media Player rips in .wmv, so, knowing that you are on a Mac, I converted to .mp3 with dbpoweramp. I hope the quality isn't too affected.

_slavo_ 12.06.2007 09:44 AM

LCD soundsystem is good party music to me.

Please do.

I'm looking for blogspots containing things you guys posted because I don't have time to order. I don't mind a bit of techno/dance whatever, but not everything. Found some Vitalic, which is quite ok.
I'm gonna check out that first Third Eye Foundation LP too.

sarramkrop 12.06.2007 09:48 AM

Third Eye Foundation's 'You Guys Kill Me' is his best, I think, but not sure about its party- factor. Great title for an album, when combined with the sleeve design.

Savage Clone 12.06.2007 09:51 AM

There are a couple of tracks on the first Word Of Life LP (Swedish psych band from the late 1990s) that are highly danceable and fairly long.
Also, Circle's "Prospekt" album has some kinetic jams for sure.

atari 2600 12.06.2007 09:52 AM

Newcleus - Jam On It (8:03)
http://www.badongo.com/file/5458581

wiki:
Newcleus is a band that came in on the first wave of electronic hip-hop in the early 1980s.
"Jam-On It" has become their most famous single, ushering in a new sound altogether for hip hop: from the conga rock of the old school to a more programmed sound. This song was ahead of its time in production techniques and general atmosphere.
In early 2005, journalist Xeni Jardin declared that "Jam On It" is "the theme song to Wikipedia" due to "the little chipmunk-funk voices" that go "wikiwikiwiki".

sarramkrop 12.06.2007 09:58 AM

The United States Of America have also songs like 'Coming Down' that wouldn't feel out of place at a party. It's one of those tunes that seems to hold its own when mixed with more contemporary stuff.

HA! The record above is in fact called 'The Mess We Made'. I totally got confused with Broadcast's 'The Noise Made By People' and PJ Harvey's 'The Mess We're In'.

that should do for now. remember, never play ultra obscure noise, post punk, free jazz, grindcore to impress people at a party. call me a pussy, but when i throw a party i like to have people go "o man i love this song", guilty pleasures, hip hop, classics, and some more popular songs by lesser known artists are the best way to go, hence the list (this is actually a replica of one of my itunes party lists)

atari 2600 12.10.2007 12:44 PM

The party already happened, but cool list. I included the same Melt-Banana song on a best of '07 cd.

great tune, but not guaranteed to make anyone dance their socks off. put it on late in the night when you want people to pass out or leave.

Quote:

if you're going with zeppelin, swap it out with misty mountain hop. "hops" generally get people to dance, hence the term "sock hop."

But if I were having a party and wanted people to dance, I'd play a bunch of cheese from the '80s. In line with more of what you were asking for, I'd go with Peaches, Cibo Matto, Japanther, My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult, Beastie Boys and Pop will Eat Itself. Siouxsie has a few great danceable tunes as well.
