Australia to censor internet
Using "think of the children!" as a cover, Dear Leader Kevin Rudd and Commissar for Communications Stephen Conroy will be implementing mandatory filtering of 'inappropriate' material.
As the Howard government demonstrated with their sweeping anti-terrorism laws, we can trust our government with vast unrestrained power. http://www.techcrunch.com/2007/12/30...-the-internet/ http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599...28-421,00.html http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...31/2129471.htm http://www.grods.com/post/1775/ The Australia Institute discussion paper this is being based on: http://www.tai.org.au/documents/dp_fulltext/DP53.pdf You'd be mad to think anything critical of our treatment of Aboriginals, our policy towards East Timor & West Papua, or a thousand other topics just might be put on the block list. Can't imagine the Liberal/National coalition voting against this on account of they fucking hate civil liberties; this has been a key policy of Family First since they managed to sneak a man into the senate; that leaves Greens, Nick Xenophon and any rebellious Labor senators. Oh joy. |
That's crazy.
|
NI HAO MA?
|
fuck off
|
reactionary bullshit, the parents should be censoring their childrens internet usage as my brother does with his kids not the government. you can always get around these things though by using proxys and tunnels.
|
Wait, what the fuck!?! Why the fuck are they doing this? That is so fucked up, seriously.
|
Now I know what you Yanks feel like when you have the Religious Right dictating policy :(
|
I wouldn't worry to much about it. Where there's a will, there's a way.
|
Tokolosh I wouldn't say that, we Americans have been trying so hard yet we are going nowhere.
|
You make it sound as if we Europeans have it all figured out.
|
Well it is better than America, where the right-wingers have made it seem that if you have an original thought you are the devil.
edit- By the way I am not sure how bad it is for you European. |
![]() "You obviously don't know me". |
Tokolosh, save us!
|
Does this mean that I won't be able to bully gmku anymore?
|
Isn't he American?
|
you know what, i'm not even go on my fucking censorship rant because it would take 20 minutes to type. i'm just gonna say that you people are ASS BACKWARDS and leave it at that.

If any of you have actually read up or taken any interest, its no different to the filters that were previously on offer a few months ago from the government, with the difference its given to you when you sign up ( I presume)..
if you dont want it, you can still ask for it to be turned off ffs. If I were y'all I'd be more worried about the fact that Microsoft intends to 'filter' the internet far more extremely. There's also some other stuff recently about porno on the internet, but that has more to do with people in the sex industry rather than the general public. Different regulations about how people in the industry can distribute their media. not 100% sure on the details as I didnt read it properly, but it was in KinKe mag a few months ago. probably some other stuff on the internet about it from around then. |
I just looked up pussy on google and it still works btw.

and
For kevin07 to roll out his wholeshebang education revolution, I can definatley understand why this along with the new uncapped broadband is one of his first priorities. If hes getting every child to actually use the internet as a medium for their learning on a daily basis, without doing something like this, it would not have been long for someone to take a stab at whether or not he understands how DANGEROUS AND UNSAFE the internet can be for little kiddies. yaknow. |

My understanding is the mafia is upset because there is so much free porn on the internet that they aren't making the billions they were. Personally I don't think children should be exposed to pornography. Especially the twisted antisex porno that seems to be required these days. |

jesus, paranoia much? stop eating smack ffs.
filters in schools are for the dumb kids. I remember watching a chick being unfed by a dalmation in the school library. and the difference a filter would make to a t2+ connection, if you didnt want to opt out of the providers manditory filter, is ridiculously negligable. The fact whether you're running a wifi connection, have very small amount of ram, or having to deal with Vistawanka and a firewall would have far more effect on yr internet speed. and... rio tinto wtmf? are you unaware 90% of our media is ALREADY bought and sold? packers? murdochs? that has nothing to do with filters. |
Now I remember why the internet is so tedius. At least in the real world I can pretend I'm deaf. On here its assumed I'm semi literate and cant ignore rubbish so easily.

You're not doing international studies at RMIT by any chance are you?

So whether you voted Howard or Rudd, you were fucked from the start. |
Rudd has done some great things for the environment whilst he's been in.

Really? Only been in a couple days and I think The Great Barrier Reef is still being cooked alive, they are still going ahead with the woodchip mill in Tasmania, still logging in Tasmania, and Victorias catchments.
moar censorship links: http://www.itwire.com/content/view/15946/1103/1/1/ http://www.efa.org.au/Publish/PR080102.html http://www.australianit.news.com.au/...-15306,00.html http://www.australianit.news.com.au/...-15306,00.html Senator Conroy's predecessor Helen Coonan moved away from insisting internet service providers offer filtering after a 2006 NetAlert study showed the filters were expensive, difficult to set up, frequently inaccurate and drastically slowed the network performance. http://www.netalert.gov.au/programs/research.html Six filters were tested under optimised conditions, but the best responder resulted in an 18 per cent reduction in relative performance, while the worst cut performance by 78 per cent. Yeah, because whatever government we have is going to solve all our problems.
|
how many aussie's here have voted in more than one election? i know for a fact some of you would not have even voted yet because you would be under 18. filtering does not stop the use of proxies and tunnels, the filters are put in place for children and idiots.
do you think no censorship should occur at all across any media? why are you getting in an uproar over internet censorship? some humans do not have the necessary brain function to be able to protect themselves, so in someways governments have to act as proxy parents, also some parents are fucking useless and fucked up so their kids need someone to protect them. or should it be too easy for children to be able to access kiddy porn, animal porn, be targets of paedo's in chat rooms. leave all the left and right wing ideologies at the door and just be rational... and don't go and quote burroughs - destroy all rational thought out of context... don't be left wing for the sake of being left wing, don't be right conservative because you yourself think that you need to protect people... think about things in a rational manor, censorship needs to occur in some form or another. anarchy and kaos does not work, however, people with the abilty to censor their childrens use of media products should do so and not be so lazy. |

Rudd has done some good things, you can only take small steps when you are a leader of a country, you can not be altruistic and you cannot fix everything in the space of a few short years in power, let alone weeks. Not to mention all the other political and business factions that a leader has to deal with. Also Labour donot receive full control of the senate for a few months yet, so they can only move so fast on a few things. The guy has already done more in a few weeks than Howard did in 11 and a bit years on the environment side of things, making the first step and signing australia up to the kyoto protocol, which is an initial step to a greater australian and world environmental policy.... just remember clydesdales are a much bigger horse if you need to get a bit higher. |

Zero - Australia will not become communist just because Rudd can speak mandarin. Also Australia's democracy is far to complex to be able to make a change to such a political system, which is proven not to work as well as democracy through the historical political systems. The labour party is not meant to be left wing, it is just another party in a two party political system, because it was born from the labour movement does not make it left wing. As far as I am concerned Australia should have embraced the Asian connection for day one because geographically we are an asian country. |
Terminal Pharmacy is one of my favourite posters. The above few posts are primes examples why.
